Harry Potter Wedding at Hogwarts

Harry Potter wedding at Hogwarts (33)

OK, so Lewis and Cassie’s wedding wasn’t actually held at Hogwarts, but there ceremony venue, Manchester Town Hall, does have a striking resemblance. They also decorated their reception space so amazingly well, with so many little accurate touches, that might has well been!

“Two words describe our wedding entirely: Harry Potter!” said the bride. “We got engaged at the Diagon Alley section at Universal Studios Florida and have always loved the Harry Potter films and books. It made sense to us to have a Harry Potter themed wedding and to take pretty much all of the inspiration for our day from the films. We wanted it to look quirky and classy but not like an 8-year-old’s birthday party which can sometimes be a challenge when you have a theme, especially something like Harry Potter!”

Movie Themed Cinema Wedding in Scotland

Movie themed cinema wedding in scotland (24)

Mandy and Ally LOVE the movies, so when they came to plan their November wedding it was the obvious choice. This was confirmed when they realised they could have their ceremony at the Glasgow Film Theatre!

“I honestly don’t think we would have had a wedding like this if it wasn’t for Rock n Roll Bride”, began Mandy. “Before I found this blog I was thinking it would be in a chapel followed by a meal at a hotel. Whilst this is lovely for some people, it just didn’t feel right for us. We’re both huge movie buffs and go to the GFT every Christmas to watch It’s a Wonderful Life, so when we were looking around for the perfect venue I felt like I had nothing to lose by asking if we could use the cinema. To my surprise, they said they’d hosted a few weddings over the years and, thanks to the great Scottish law, we were legally married there!”

“Prior to my arrival the ushers handed out popcorn cones and we played a slideshow of the bridal party which included a picture of the absentee bridesmaid, my dog Skye. This was followed by a short clip from Muriel’s Wedding of Muriel walking down the aisle to ABBA. We then played another short clip from 10 Things I Hate About You of Heath Ledger singing ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’.”

The reception was completely decorated by the couple, using all their own movie memorabilia from home. Their tables were named after some of their favourite films. “All the centrepieces were from our personal figurine collection apart from vases which were bought from Home Bargains. We made a videotape table plan and the movie table posters, using our faces in place of the movie stars, were made for us by a friend. The top table was It’s A Wonderful Life.”

Wes Anderson Wedding at Camp and Furnace

camp and furnace wedding (41)

Inspired by Wes Anderson, Jennie and Fergus planned a quirky wedding at Camp and Furnace in Liverpool. “Our wedding was Wes Anderson themed in the sense that small nods ran through the venue decoration, entertainment and outfits”, the groom explained. “We’re both massive fans of his films and the level of set design minutiae that goes into them lent itself quite nicely to an underlying theme for a wedding.”

“We used an Etsy-bought illustration of Moonrise Kingdom for our save the dates; had vintage film style cinema ticket invites and our wedding planner organised a Fantastic Mr Fox style wedding breakfast. We showed a few of the films in a little cinema corner we had set up and Jennie made pocket squares from fox print fabric for the groomsmen. Our favours, which Jennie also made, were fabric bookmarks with Wes Anderson film motifs on them.”

Love and Lavender

Lauren and Mike spent just £2500 on their gorgeous wedding. They were inspired by two things – the movies and lavender. “We had lots of references to the movies”, the bride said. “We are both massive film geeks and we couldn’t not have that represented on our big day. We had little hints scattered all over the place, including our Star Wars photo booth, movie quotes and movie poster illustrations around the venue, marvel confetti cones, and Mendl’s boxes for wedding favours from The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

“Our guest book was inspired by Disney’s Up Adventure Book, our hot dog stand was called Dog Years (the hot dog restaurant from American Pie) and we also made a playlist of all our favourite songs from our favourite movies including Scottie Doesn’t Know from Euro Trip. We also managed to include our favourite TV programme, Game of Thrones, with our cake toppers that were Pop Vinyl Daenerys and Khal Drogo figures. One of readings during the ceremony also came from the Game of Thrones book.”

Casual Film-Inspired Wedding with 1950s Influences

FilmWedding_JoannaBongard_0393

Amy and Rob spent just £4000 on their quirky film inspired wedding. They did a lot of things themselves and saved the pennies by making unconventional choices, like serving fish n chips for the main meal.

“Our wedding was casual, fun and a little bit vintage, with a dash of film references thrown in for good measure”, said Amy. “We also both love the 1950s so there was some influence from there as well, particularly in my outfit.  We are both big film fans so we wanted to embrace our love of cinema by including our favourite characters in the wedding invites to give a hint at what the day had in store.”

“Our local cinemas kindly donated posters which were used to decorate the walls of the reception venue, and my back catalogue of Empire magazines really came in handy as they were used to make decorations and confetti! When the guests were tucking into their food (fish n chips!) they were treated to our favourite scores and songs from our favourite films.”

Halloween and Lego Wedding

Rob and India's Halloween themed Edinburgh Wedding_SD Photography172

I don’t think it’ll come as a massive surprise to any of you that the vast majority of newly-weds I interview say that they wanted their wedding to reflect them. They took their mutual passions and combined them to create a wedding that felt individual, authentic and unique. But it might shock you to hear that a lot of brides I chat to pre-wedding tell me that they’re really worried about whether their mish-mash of ideas will work together. I mean, when you have a set theme it’s pretty easy to know what’s going to go… but Halloween, Lego and sparkles? Do those things work side by side?

I say hell yes and so do India and Rab who had those exact things at their October 31st wedding in Edinburgh! “Our wedding was a Lego Hallowedding!” began the bride. “We mixed Halloween with old Hollywood glamour and all the things we love including Lego, horror films and sci-fi. We wanted our day to be as fun as possible and reflect our own personalities. Since getting together weave enjoyed some big Halloween parties, and had lots of fun planning costumes, decorations, and food so the wedding was a bit of an extension of that.”
