Charlotte and Jack’s wedding had a really unique location – Southend Pier! The day had a retro theme with Disney references throughout. “Our wedding theme was ‘Grease meets the Great British Seaside!'”, said the bride. “We were inspired by lots of wedding blogs, especially Rock n Roll Bride! We saw so many couples who had a day that reflected them and that’s what inspired us to plan a wedding that people would describe as completely us. Also, we saw so many weddings that looked like they and the guests were having a total blast, so we wanted to have a day full of fun!”

The wedding was held at the Royal Pavilion which is located a mile out to sea! “Pretty much every guest has said that they’ve never been to a wedding like ours before. Lots of people thought it was really cool that we were getting married on the pier. I also think the amount of handmade decorations is something that makes our wedding really different too, and so much of it was made by the Groom’s crafty mum that it was really special.”

If there’s one thing I get asked about more than anything else, it’s my hair! Whenever I post a selfie I have at least a couple of questions about how I keep it healthy, what to do when its damaged from bleach and how I make my colours last. While I’ve written a few posts on this individual topics before, I thought it was time for an update (things are changing all the time) and I figured one ULTIMATE post, covering everything might be helpful. I hope you agree!

Keeping Hair Healthy

Bleaching

First of all, unless your hair is naturally super light blonde, you WILL need to bleach it if you want to dye your hair a bright, fantasy colour. The colour simply won’t show up, or will look muddy, on hair any darker than light blonde. This is the one stage I would never recommend that you do yourself! It’s very, very easy to fry your hair if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing so the best thing you can do for your hair is go to a colour specialist for this part.

The brighter and more saturated you want your colour you look, the lighter you hair will need to be (however if you want a pastel look you’ll also need a super light base to work with too). It can be difficult to get very dark hair, light enough in one sitting to get the exact colour results you need. Everybody’s hair is different though so speak to your colourist and take their advice! The texture of your hair may mean you need a few gentler bleaching sessions over a series of months to get to your desired base colour.

I also never, ever bleach my hair more than once. I’ve heard about people doing two or even three passes of bleach over their hair in one sitting and the idea makes me wince! Even using protection such as Olaplex (see below) this just seems like a really terrible idea. When I get my hair bleached, we only ever do the roots. If I need to fade my colour to change it up, I just quit topping up the colour for a few weeks before I go to the salon to get it as light as possible.

Olaplex (or similar)

Olaplex revolutionised the hair care market when their three step system launched a few years ago. So much so that there are now 32 competitor brands producing a product that (claims to) do the same thing! I’m yet to use any of them other than Olaplex, but I’m going to a salon soon that uses Innoluxe so I’ll report back. Using these products not only limits the damage the bleach does to your hair, but it can also help rebuild damaged hair too! As soon as I started using Olaplex, my hair transformed. I can not recommend it enough.

These products are salon-only meaning you have to go to a hairdressers to use them. While you can buy them from places like eBay and Amazon, I’ve heard that due to the popularity a lot of them are fake, so I wouldn’t recommend risking it! The cost is between £30-£50 on top of the usual cost of having your hair dyed.

Rescuing Hair When it’s Bleach Damaged

I have written extensively about this before so if you haven’t already, you should definitely read this article first.

My biggest tip for fixing your hair when it’s either breaking off, or super stretchy and springy is to give it time. It WILL take a long while for it to get healthy again so you need to treat it with kindness and have patience. Depending on the extent of the damage you may also need to cut some of it off and start again. I had to do this and it was painful but so worth it in the end!

Restore the protein

The reason hair gets damaged by things like bleach and heat, is because they attack the natural proteins (also known as keratin) in your hair. In order to get it healthy again you need to restore these proteins with treatments such as the Redken Extreme range.

Slather it in moisture 

As well as being deficient in keratin, your hair will likely be very, very thirsty. Healthy hair has the perfect balance of both protein and moisture in it, so you need to make sure you restore both. A lack of moisture is what makes your hair straw-like or causes it to snap off when it gets to a certain length. I love anything by the Moroccan Oil brand.

Avoid heat (as much as possible)

Even though my hair is pretty healthy these days, I try to leave it to dry naturally as often as I can. Intense heat, like bleach, is one of the biggest things that will damage your hair fast. I then style it with straighteners on the lowest setting. Always use a heat protecting spray too! If your hair is in a really bad state, you should avoid heat at all costs, however if, like mine, its in pretty good condition then using heat on it occasionally is OK.

Give it a break

It should go without saying, but if your hair is damaged you need to treat it with care and that means no more bleaching, no more heat and lots of lovely treatments to help it recover. You should also avoid brushing it too often, rough-drying it with a towel or wearing tight hairstyles.

Well, those are two things I never thought I’d be putting together but, as I’m sure you know, when it comes to alternative weddings nothing is off limits! You know what though, 90s grunge and Disney are both totally my jam!

The mood board for this shoot was based around tartan shirts, Dr Martens,  Kurt and Courtney’s wedding on Waikiki Beach and Marc Jacobs’ Perry Ellis Grunge collection from 1992. “I’ve been lucky enough to have been part of many beautiful, ethereal styled shoots over the past couple of years, but none of them have allowed me to really scratch a more playful, eccentric itch”, explained florist Lisa of Floral Menagerie. “I was just desperate to make floral Mickey ears and put a flower crown on a groom!”

‘Flora’ by Chi Chi London, £74.99

For many brides, the dress shopping experience is one of the most exciting times of planning a wedding. Getting together with a gaggle of girlfriends, swooning over all the pretties hanging on the rails, experiencing that magical moment when you find ‘the one’ and (hopefully) making everyone cry! Brides have been buying their wedding dresses this way for a very long time, hell I even did it, and I loved every moment.

However the 2017 bride has way more choice and shopping for a wedding dress doesn’t have to be the same experience that it’s always been. In fact recent reports suggest that brides are choosing to spend less money on their wedding dress in a bid to focus their financial efforts elsewhere – on say, buying a house, or starting a family.

The media loves to blast the wedding industry for over-inflated prices and outrageously expensive wedding dresses. Don’t worry, this article is not another one of those! While I have always championed not going into debt for your wedding, and the fact that if you don’t want to spend a lot to get married you don’t have to, I am also of the belief that quality costs money for a reason (higher quality of fabrics, hand made techniques that take a lot of time etc). However if you can’t, or don’t want to, spend a mortgage payment on your wedding dress, there have never been more budget-friendly alternatives available to you than right now!

Another thing I’m hearing more and more from my readers is the struggle that plus size brides are having marrying (boom boom!) a more cost effective wedding dress option with something that fits (and suits!) them. I mean, the Topshop bridal collection was lovely and all, but was pretty much exclusively aimed at women under a size 12 IMHO.

So today, I wanted to share with you some of my favourite plus size inclusive bridal brands that not only make dresses that will look amazing on you whatever your shape or size, but they’ll keep your wallet happy too!

‘Carmen’ by Chi Chi London, £64.99

Voodoo Vixen‘s curve line ranges from 1XL-4XL (UK sizes 16-26) and includes a number of adorable bridal dresses. Unfortunately not all of their occasion dresses are available in their curve sizes, but their prices are incredibly reasonable, starting from just £60!

Chi Chi London have been a Rock n Roll Bride favourite for a while now, and with good reason. Their dresses are cute, great quality and insanely affordable. PLUS, after noticing that more and more brides on a budget were rocking their dresses for their weddings, they have just released an actual wedding collection meaning there is now more choice than ever! While not every style is available in every size, their curve collection does goes up to a UK size 26. 

Vivien of Holloway, one of the original purveyor of reproduction retro style dresses, have been offering a bridal range for many years. Their stunning satin gowns start from £99 and are done by measurements, rather than standard sizing. The largest size they offer is a 46 in bust and a 38 in waist.

Monsoon‘s wedding dress collection might not be priced at under £150 (they’re more like £250-£500, so still a great price!) but did you know they also go up to a size 22 in a lot of their gowns? Perfect for the babe who wants something a bit more bohemian in style.

When a couple meets while playing World of Warcraft, you can all but guarantee that when they tie the knot they’re going to have a video game themed wedding! Hanneke and Duncan were married in Bristol in September.

“We love organising parties and having friends over, and we wanted to do just that, but on a larger scale, for our wedding”, said the bride. “It was very important for us that our guests had fun and felt relaxed. The morning was more formal and dressed up, because we did want to have a sense of gravitas for our actual ceremony, but we had most fun and put most creativity into organising the evening party.”

The day was split into two parts with the ceremony in the morning, and the party later that evening. “In the morning we had coffee, tea and pastries at Hotel du Vin with our ceremony guests, walked to the Registry Office for the ceremony, and then went back to Hotel du Vin for a three course lunch. For our party in the evening, we hired Dundry Village Hall as we live two doors down from it and we got a villagers’ discount! It also meant we could have the after party at our house after the village hall closed at 11.30.”

As soon as they got engaged, Morgan and Sam decided that a Halloween wedding would be their absolute dream. They wanted to include the dark horror side and also the warm coloured, Autumnal side of Halloween. The wedding was held at Reynoldston Village Hall on October 31st.

The day began with an intimate, humanist ceremony. “Neither of us are religious and it was really important that we had a simple yet meaningful ceremony, with a dash of humour thrown in”, began the bride. “We wanted to trim out all of the fluff, so no songs or readings – just the two of us declaring our love for one another.”

“My mum walked me down the aisle to a song that Sam and I call ours, Tears for Fears, Head Over Heels. We wanted our vows to be unique to us and reflect the way we love each other, so we wrote them. We both cried the whole way through. We exchanged rings but incorporated the Pagan tradition of handfasting. It was really nice to include an old ritual and I spent quite a while studying the meaning behind each colour of ribbon and assigning it to who I thought that best represented.”

They flew over to Las Vegas to elope, but Sally and Stuart still wanted a party back home in Birmingham to celebrate with their loved ones. “Our wedding was themed around kitsch, Vegas and movies with cheesecake”, said the bride. “We had a Las Vegas elopement on Valentine’s day because we visited the travel agent on a whim during Christmas and found ourselves with six weeks to organise our outfits! We got married at The Little White Wedding Chapel by Elvis. Our friends and family watched over the internet and when we got back, we promised our family and friends a party so we wanted to bring a bit of Vegas to them.”

The party was held at The Bond Company in Digbeth. “It was easy for everyone to get to and we had been to some fun events and food markets at the venue. Digbeth is also very vibrant with constantly changing street art and we wanted our photographs to reflect that. We chose our photographer Lisa Carpenter, based on wedding photos she had done in the area for another wedding and on the day, she had scouted out areas with awesome street art for us to be photographed in front of.”

Chris and Ixchelt’s March wedding was inspired by the bride and groom’s favourite colours – purple and green. They had a budget-friendly DIY wedding at The Mytton and Mermaid hotel in Shrewsbury.

“Our inspiration was peacock colours!”, said the bride. “Purple is one of my favourite colours and green is Chris’ so we just added a bit of teal into the mix after getting ideas online. After that it made sense to give it a bit of countryside rustic feel too due to the venue being in the wonderful Shropshire countryside. We wanted the wedding to be colourful, warm, intimate and relaxed.”

“We pretty much DIYed everything. We bought paper pom poms to hang all over the venue for a pop of colour, printed Polaroid style photos of our engagement shoot which we hung around the tree by the river, and we used rolls of organza in three colours as runners for the wedding breakfast. We painstakingly collected jars for months for the centrepieces and my mum (a retired florist) did all the flowers.”

Regular Rock n Roll Bride magazine columnist, Alex Smith, is here to talk wedding shoes for men… And why the right shade of brown isn’t always that easy to find.

It took me almost a year to get my wedding suit to the point where I was completely happy with it, but I hadn’t even begun to think about shoes. You may not know this, but shoes have rules! No black with blue, no brown with black (unless it’s tan) no orange with anything… What goes with what even comes down to what shade of the colour something is. You will find yourself standing in a store shopping for a pair of brown shoes, holding a pair of brown shoes and saying to yourself “I want brown shoes, just not this brown, and also not that brown.” Of course, the answer to finding shoes that match perfectly with your suit is to have them custom made, but if I had thousands of pounds to spend on my feet, I’d be travelling everywhere by engine powered rollerblades like any other sane individual.

However before you start thinking that your feet are too expensive to maintain and start hacking your leg off at the ankle, may I introduce you to Undandy.

I find when I go shopping for shoes for a specific outfit, for example if I already own the suit, I am always settling with shoes that are ‘just about right,’ or ‘ish the right shade,’ well let me tell you, your wedding day is not the day to feel like you’ve settled, trust me!

You want a bright blue suede and red patent leather loafer with yellow stitching? Then Undandy have got your back. I have spent hours on the tool, it is super easy to use and I have designed about 30 pairs of shoes and added them all to my ‘watch list.’ I’ve decided that I’m going to take up being a nudist and spend all my money on custom shoes instead. I’ll be the person in a prison holding cells with by far the most stylish feet.

Okay, so let me take you through how it works:

1. Pick if you want a shoe or a boot.
Shoe styles: Oxford, Derby, MonkStrap or Loafer
Boot styles: Standard, Chukka or Chelsea Boot.

2. Select the ‘last,’ which is the tip of the shoe.
Styles: Puff Toe, Bold Claw Toe and Round Toe.

3. Decorate: Whole cut, cap toe, half brogue or full brogue look.

4. Choose the material. Each section of the shoe can be in a different colour and material if you want.
Material: Leather (Patent and Standard), Suede and Canvas

5. Finish off with picking the colour of the laces and the stitching!

6. For an extra flourish, you can engrave the sole of the shoe. You could go romantic with your initials as a couple, or the date of the ceremony or send subtle messages to the people you didn’t want to invite, maybe kick up a heel during the ceremony to reveal. “Get lost Auntie Carol!”

Jou and Fer were officially married in Guatemala in 2015 – in fact we featured their amazing steampunk wedding on this very blog! However, since the bride is Mexican, they decided they wanted to have a second, religious celebration as well. Their theme was simply ‘Mexico’.

This second wedding took place in July at Hotel La Cañadita. “We had a lot of friends playing a important roles in this day”, said Jou. “Apart from the caterers and the DJ, everyone who provided services were all friends. This made it very special for us.”

The ceremony was held in a beautiful garden. “It was rainy season but we were lucky that it was a sunny day. I made a funny mistake during the vows – I said ‘I take you as my wife’ rather than husband and everyone laughed before I’d even realised what I’d said. It’s impossible to pick just one favourite moment from the day but the ceremony was pretty special. I also loved when my dad cried while I danced with him. Fernando said his favourite part was that everyone got really drunk!”

Whether you think you want to wear one or not, I think every bride should try on at least one wedding veil. Like nothing else, veils have the power to completely transform your entire wedding day look and whatever kind of dress you’ve picked, you can totally rock one.

However there are so many different types of veils available that it can be a bit confusing and rather daunting when you start looking for one. Luckily, today we’ve partnered with Britten, experts in the field, who are here to demystify everything veil-related for us!

What are the different types of veil?

Single tier wedding veils

These are what most people imagine when asked to picture a veil. Single tier means that the veil flows from it’s attachment point (normally a comb) down the back. There is no blusher section of veil in front of the face.

Two tier wedding veils

This means that the veil includes a ‘blusher’ which can be pulled forward over the face. This is raised during the ceremony for the first kiss or at the exact moment you are married and is then swept back over the head to form a second layer at the back of the veil. Britten make their blushers 72cm long but they can be made to any length if requested.

Drop veils

This is a two tier veil with no gather at the top. They are often held in place with a headband or hair pins, rather than a comb.

Mantilla veils

This is a single tier veil with no gather at the top. Britten sew a comb to the top of each of theirs so they can be worn at the top of the head. They are also sometimes described as Spanish veils.

Juliet veils

These are where a ‘cap’ of material holds the veil in place. This is a traditional vintage look, dating from 16th century England. It is believed the design dates to actors performing Juliet in the original performances of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’.

Amy and John wanted to be married outside and for their wedding to have a bohemian and rustic vibe. Both being massive music lovers, that was also always going to be a big part of the celebrations. They had a rock and blues band (who are all their friends) as their entertainment and the bride sang with them in the evening too!

“We met 11 years ago working at the same hospital”, began Amy. “We dated for a few months but decided to just remain friends. We stayed in contact over the years and then in 2014 we got back together and five months later we got engaged. Despite our years apart with always knew we’d end up together… And so did our friends and family!”

The day was held at Lemore Manor in Herefordshire.  “We didn’t want a traditional wedding in a church or indoors so when we found our venue we fell in love with being able to get married outside underneath the bandstand and for all our guests to be seated on hay bales. We also didn’t want a standard wedding band, so we had a rock and blues band play for us who just so happened to be our family friends. I guess what made it more unique is that I’d sang with the band before and I was able to sing with them on our wedding day. Most of the music played throughout the day was rock, blues and acoustic.”

Daley and Logan met at a goth club in Austin seven years ago. They began hosting events together, including the Austin Vampire Ball, which is actually where they got engaged! Their wedding theme was suitably ‘vampire royalty’ and and they wanted their wedding to be one-of-a-kind, but with some nods to tradition.

“Since we are the nominated king and queen of the Vampire Court of Austin, we wanted a wedding that would reflect that,” began Daley. “We also took some design inspiration from Phantom of the Opera and Beauty and The Beast, but essentially we were our own inspiration for our wedding. We wanted people to walk in and immediately say ‘This is definitely Logan and Daley’.”

“We wanted a very unique wedding with some surprisingly traditional aspects. Logan wore custom armour (crafted after the armour from Dracula Untold), with his fangs and green contacts. We also had a dragon cake with a replica of Dracula’s Castle, a crowning ceremony, and more red lighting and flowers than you could shake a stick at!”

The planner is broken up into four sections: Calendar and Timeline, The Nitty Gritty, Fun Stuff and Notes. The 18 month calendar is where you’ll jot down all your appointments and generally plan your life, and the planning timeline will let you know what to do and when. There’s even a budget checklist to keep you on track.

The Nitty Gritty section is where we get down and dirty with every aspect of the planning process. I’ve shared my tips for each important bit (from choosing your dress, writing your invites, managing your guest list and RSVPs, choosing your cake/ flowers/ decor etc) and I’ve even written you some madlibs to make writing your own vows a breeze (you’re welcome).

Charlotte and John decided to get married while on Holiday in San Francisco. They had just a photographer there as their witness. Afterwards they planned a low-stress village hall reception back home in North Yorkshire with all their friends and family. It was inspired by kid’s birthday parties and the groom’s pride and joy: His DeLorean!

“John didn’t want the pressure of organising a big wedding”, said Charlotte, “and I don’t think I could have organised a full on wedding day with out some kind of breakdown! So we decided to go to off and get married on our own. “We had booked our holiday to San Francisco before getting engaged and I had been Pinteresting things we could do there. I then made a joke about getting married while we were away… One thing led to another and the next thing I knew I was asking my mum if she would be OK with it!”

Tara and Rick’s colourful Austin wedding was held at Prospect House, a beautiful blank canvas of a venue that allowed them to pretty much do whatever they wanted. They opted for a bohemian yet contemporary, avant-garde yet brightly colourful celebration.

“We were inspired by the environment and location of the wedding venue plus the artistic talents of our vendors”, said the bride. “Inspiration included the landscape of Dripping Springs, natural light, the architecture of Prospect House and May Day English traditions. We didn’t follow any rules, we chose what appealed to us starting from what we wore, decorations, food, music and the structure of the day.”

“The event theme reflected our personalities and aesthetics from start to finish. My husband and I are artists and we curated this event with the same passion as we do with any of our creative projects. We picked vendors who are artists themselves. We trusted their vision and wanted them to utilise their artistic talents and abilities to the fullest. It was also a daytime/ brunch event, which created an informal, fun and light atmosphere. Having a daytime event not only saved us money but brunch is our favourite thing to do so it suited us perfectly!”

Katie and Eric had one goal for their wedding: To be married. Even though they’d been taking about getting hitched for a while, they decided to elope in Vegas just ten days before!

“When you elope, the theme kind of just becomes ‘you two'”, said Katie. “Our day was very us – full of colour, laughter and love! When you plan everything so quickly the internet is a wonderful thing. I used Google, Pinterest, Yelp and Rock n Roll Bride to help us find vendors in Las Vegas, a city we are not native to. I made a ton of phone calls and emailed so many people in the days leading up to our big day.”

“The starting point for inspiration was the fuchsia pink velvet mod boots I wore. I was originally looking for silver boots that I had just found online which were from & Other Stories, but then Eric spotted the bright pink ones in the store and suggested those instead. He knows me so well, that must be why I married him! Everything kind of fell into place after that. My flowers and hot pink lipstick all went back to the boots. Even when we were picking out Eric’s navy blue velvet jacket, we thought, ‘Will it look good with the boots!?'”

As issue 14 is now on sale, I thought today I would share some of the bonus photos from our issue 13 rainbow bride fashion editorial. I love putting these shoots together with my amazing photo shoot team (do go and check their websites out in the credits at the bottom of this post, they really are the BEST at what they do!) and although I’ll always prefer to share real wedding inspo on the blog over styled shoots, when you create something you’re proud of its fun to share that too!

The inspiration for this shoot was simple: RAINBOWS! However, as ever, we wanted to put a twist on the trend and do something unexpected. So, rather than throwing all the colours in every shot, we decided to create a colour blocked effect with each outfit.

Below is each outfit we put together. Obviously we didn’t stick to the exact colours of the rainbow, instead going for softer tones such as mint, peach and nude to add a yet another twist to the tale. For the most part we also tried to match each contrasting coloured wig from Annabelle’s Wigs with something else in the shot as well (the nails, the colours in the background) for some added colourful contrast.

This peach Belle and Bunty dress is a dream. Lisa, our photographer, wanted to channel some soft focus 80s glamour with the close up photos of this look. It’s definitely not going to be for everyone but I kinda love it!

The Wellbeing Farm in Lancashire was the perfect venue for Christie and Kurt’s informal wedding. They didn’t have a colour scheme because they wanted something more organic and mismatched. “We tried not to have a proper theme as we thought more mismatched would be better”, said the bride. “However a ‘no theme’ theme was pretty impossible because when you start buying you naturally gravitate towards similar things.”

The one thing the bride did want though, was lots and lots of flowers. “We are both green-fingered and used to have our own allotment so the flowers were important to us. The Flower Farm were able to provide us with absolutely beautiful wildflowers, most of which they had grown themselves. We wanted flowers everywhere so there were fresh local flowers in every possible vessel including tea cups, tins, jam jars, milk bottles and milk churns. My mum and dad had a production line going. My dad would eat a tin of beans every day and my mum decorated them with lace, twine and wooden hearts for us to use as flower arrangements!”
