Laidback Restaurant Wedding with 35 Guests

Colin and Tash wanted a wedding with good food, good wine and good people. They wanted it to be laid back and non-traditional and chose a restaurant as their venue. When she couldn’t find her dream dress in the usual places, the bride bought one on Etsy, and the groom ignored the traditional Scottish wedding dress code of a kilt, opting for tartan trousers as a nod to his late grandfather.

“We wanted the day to be solely about us and those who matter the most to us in the world”, said the bride. “With an 11 month old son, our wedding was celebrating us as a family, not just Colin and I as a couple. It was very intimate and although we both have big families we decided on only having our immediate family and the rest of our guests were friends. In all there were 35 guests and only 9 were our immediate family. We took all the things we love and incorporated them into our day”, she continued. “Harley Davidsons, Sailor Jerry, tattoos, good food and Beyonce (I walked down the aisle to Love on Top).”

Intimate and Colourful Wedding with Seven Guests

Liam and Sarah wanted a small wedding which meant they only invited their closest friends and immediate family. They had a big party at a later date for everyone else.

“We didn’t want too much fuss and wanted to keep everything relaxed with lots of colour”, Sarah said. “When we got engaged we immediately said we wanted a small wedding so we could celebrate with our closest family in a beautiful place. We decided just to go for it so we booked the venue in February and got married in May! It was quite a quick turn around but we wouldn’t do it any differently.”

The bride made the cake and made the bouquets herself. ” I picked bunches of flowers I liked from supermarkets and then arranged them together and tied them with brown string to give them a soft rustic feel. The table flowers were provided by Donna Beaver Flower Studio. The cake was also made by me the day before the wedding. The kitchen was covered in rainbow coloured icing and my fingers were crossed the whole drive to the venue as I was nervous the cake might get squished at every turn!”

Low-Pressure & Intimate Colourful Celebration

Doughnut#notakebacks_CoryRyanPhotography-202

Allison and Cameron’s colourful wedding took place in Austin in October. They wanted a simple, low-pressure day, with minimal stress. “Cameron and I honestly never wanted a wedding”, said the bride. “I get anxiety when I throw an event, and I am always worried if everyone else is having a good time that I forget to have a good time myself. However, since our mothers would never forgive us if we didn’t have one, we decided to do it our way. We wanted something low-stress and intimate, where we could mingle with all the guests and have a great time.”

The Sunday wedding was a morning and early afternoon event, meaning they served brunch and the whole thing was over by the evening. “Having a brunch wedding felt unique and alternative”, she explained. “Brunch may be the most popular meal in Austin, TX, and our wedding meal was no different. It was fun day drinking with our closest friends at a long family-style table. Our friends and family cheered us off on a ‘Just Married’ pedicab, and we took a brisk ride around downtown Austin taking it all it. After the reception we met up with some friends at our Airbnb across the street! Early in the evening Cam and I were able to split off and have a romantic dinner together and recall all of our favourite parts of the day! It was a really special moment.”

Intimate Winter Wedding in the Scottish Highlands

Elopement Photography in Loch Lomond Scotland by Tino&Pip-317

There’s something so extra special about tiny weddings and Hannah and Calum only invited very close friends and family to their December wedding. They were married at private house by Loch Lomond. They hired it for the full weekend and everyone stayed there with them.

“We wanted a relaxed weekend with friends and family with a wedding in the middle”, said the bride. “From the beginning we knew we wanted to do a lot of it ourselves with all of our guests pitching in. Everybody helped out, from baking the wedding cake, to creating the ceremony room, to arranging the flowers, to keeping everybody fed for the weekend. Our inspiration was that we just wanted to have lots of delicious food and spend the weekend with our favourite people.”

The bride wore a silvery grey dress (which she designed herself with the help of a dressmaker) and a green cloak that was over 100 years old and had belonged to her grandmother. “We had grand plans to whisk Hannah and Calum off and make the most of the stunning Loch Lomond scenery”, took over photographers Tino & Pip. “However that was scuppered somewhat by the raging storm! We did get a few cracking shots of them standing together braced against the wind and rain inches from the water’s edge. Hannah’s dress and cloak certainly looked dramatic against the landscape!”

Bike Parade Wedding in Toronto

Bike parade wedding in Toronto (29)

Jessica and Eldon’s wedding was small, simple and fun. Their ceremony was held at Toronto city hall and afterwards the all rode bikes to their reception!

“I think what mattered most to us was that the wedding stay simple, be enjoyable for everyone involved and to reflect who we are”, explained the bride. “We tried to keep things interactive and celebratory (bike rides, confetti, noise-makers, champagne) and use spaces within our community that are frequented by us and our friends. After the ceremony we went to Dufferin Grove Park for pictures and our reception was at a restaurant we love called Me & Mine.”

“We both have such creative, talented and intelligent friends it’s really hard to see ourselves as ‘alternative’ or ‘unique’,” she continued. “We certainly we’re driven by the need to be different. Our wedding wasn’t traditional or formal simply because we’re not traditional or formal people. Eldon and I and our friends use bikes as a regular mode of transportation so it only seemed natural to use bike to get from City Hall to the restaurant. And who could pass up the opportunity to travel en-masse with their friends and family in a wedding day bike parade?”

Intimate Wedding with a Ride on the London Eye

Fay + Mat-525

Fay and Matt met at a fancy dress party in Chester but their first official date was in London, where they now live. So when they came to plan their intimate wedding in May of this year, London was the obvious choice.

“We both wanted to get married just in front of our immediate family and a few friends”, Fay explained. “We booked our date just four months ahead and our inspiration was to keep it low-key and fuss-free. Both living in London, we also wanted to show our guests a fun day out with a real taste of the capital.”

Fay + Mat-7

“We picked Chelsea Old Town Hall for the ceremony because it was an area neither of us were familiar with (plus you get to walk out on those iconic steps). We never got round to visiting it beforehand, so it was a beautiful surprise on the day! Food was really important to us and with a small number of guests we were able to choose a good restaurant. Having booked Merchants Tavern (on a recommendation from a friend), we then joined the dots by booking a private capsule on the London Eye, which was a gift from my brother and sister-in-law, for champagne on our way back. It was such a special experience with amazing views.”

Being a Rock n Roll Bride is not About How Your Wedding Looks on the Outside…

intimate_wedding_antique_house_madrid_photographer_jesus_caballero_0017

People often ask me what constitutes a ‘Rock n Roll wedding’. To me, its never particularly been about the things, the stuff and the styling; hence why I feature such an eclectic variety of amazing weddings!

Rock n Roll brides have weddings that are punk rock and weddings that a pretty and feminine. They’re boho and natural, and they’re over the top and colourful. My readers have weddings that cost £200 and weddings that cost £20,000. They have DIY details and they have things that they pay talented artisans to create for them.

Being a Rock n Roll bride is not about how your wedding looks on the outside, it’s about your attitude on the inside. If you want to stick two fingers up to what the wedding industry says you should do, or should have at your wedding, then you are totally a Rock n Roll bride!

I adore this shoot. While it might not be the most ‘out there’ photo session I’ve ever featured, it certainly has to be one of the most beautiful. Wedding photographer Jesús Caballero told me all about his inspiration. “I teamed up with a wedding planner and a florist in Madrid to conceptualise a really intimate bridal shoot. Shot in a centric antiques house, the design was inspired in an indoor ‘vertical’ garden, a strong branded bridal dress and antique elements.”

A Love Letter to Los Angeles: An Intimate Wedding and a Masquerade Party

Intimate Los Angeles Wedding // Novel Hill

Greetings! If you were offline for the bank holiday weekend you may have missed my post yesterday about the blog’s brand new look! It’s looking so pretty, shiny and new right now it makes me all excited to see my next post go live – ha! But on with the real reason you’ve stopped by today, to see Ren and Angela’s gorgeous wedding.

Held in LA in October, the pair were inspired by the city itself for their wedding. “Los Angeles became an inspiration”, said the bride. “We were both raised in other parts of the country but found each other in Los Angeles over 10 years ago. We’ve lived here together ever since and our wedding was a bit of a love song to the city as well as to each other. We got ready at our bungalow in Silver Lake and were married under the Los Angeles skyline at sunset.”

Intimate Los Angeles Wedding // Novel Hill

“Bohemian turned posh as we were driven into Beverly Hills where we dined at a.o.c. on all our favourite foods. There was live jazz and Ren sang me love songs. Late night, we traded Beverly Hills for the grit of Hollywood. We put on animal masks and arrived at Jones Hollywood for cake and cocktails and a masquerade with all our friends! We danced until 4am and found our way home at dawn.”

An Intimate Ceremony in the Smallest Church in Ireland

worlds smallest church wedding (21)

Helen and Jamie are also planning a big, elaborate wedding with all their friends and family in Spain, but organising the legal bit over there was a huge headache. So they decided to have their official ceremony in a teeny tiny church called St Gobbans in Port Braddan, Northern Ireland.

“We live and work in Thailand and therefore getting back and forth to Spain and organising everything from far away wasn’t straightforward”, explained the bride. “As we are UK citizens and all our families live there, the least complicated way to officiate our marriage was in the UK. My mum’s cousin, Connel Auld, is a minister and has the most incredible cottage with tiny church up in the North Coast of Northern Ireland and we thought it would be really personal to get married there. Connel really only officiates for friends and family so when he offered to conduct our ceremony, we felt very privileged. He is such a great character and really made the day for us.”

worlds smallest church wedding (14)

“His house is like a museum with relics from WW2”, she continued, “Pieces of furniture, including the porthole windows that feature in some of the photos, were made for but didn’t make it onto the Titanic! The church is the smallest in Ireland and one of the smallest in the world and we just about managed to squeeze the 11 people in! This made it all the more intimate and special.”

Intimate Mountain-View Wedding in Banff

intimate mountain wedding (2)

Amanda and Keith wanted a small wedding on their own terms, so they headed up to Juniper Hotel & Bistro in Banff National Park for an intimate ceremony followed by a great meal with their small number of guests.

“Our wedding was inspired by our flare for tattoos and being our crazy selves”, said the bride. “We wanted something small that reflected our love of being outside and of being different to other people.”

“We loved doing a first look. Cassie, our photographer, had us hide out in the woods behind the Juniper. She instructed Keith to stand facing the tress and not turn around. I could tell he was nervous. I was giggling the whole time I was walking up to him, excited and nervous. Then he opened his eyes and all of a sudden my nerves went away. We were both laughing hysterically. We were finally getting married!”
