As same sex marriage was not yet legal where they live in Australia, Scott and Carlos chose to have their destination wedding in New York, which for them, represents a multicultural, vibrant and positive city where millions of different people co-exist. Being in New York meant they were able to forget all their worries - how LGBTQ rights were about to be put out for debate in Australia and the furore that surrounded it, about going back to an unknown future in their home country of Venezuela that was/is falling apart, or the daily struggles and challenges in their everyday lives - and simply celebrate their love.

It's not often a wedding literally stops me in my tracks but as soon as Emma and Ian's Las Vegas wedding landed in my inbox I was OBSESSED. Their email read, "Dear Kat, we got married at The Neon Boneyard in Las Vegas on September 21st. The bride is Emma, a funeral director, the groom is Ian, a musician and artist. We had planned a holiday visiting friends in Vegas and thought it was the perfect opportunity for a quiet, intimate ceremony… Oh and the groom is a crossdresser and insisted on having a dress too."

Robyn and Ash were legally married in Vegas at the Chapel of the Flowers but they wanted to host a big party when they got back to Yorkshire for all their family and friends. The party had a really low key, retro and kitsch vibe, hosted at their local community centre. The flowers came from a local flower market, the cakes were from various supermarkets and the stationery was made by the bride. Instead of a fancy meal they served wood-fired pizza and the night ended with - who else? - an Elvis impersonator!

September 29, 2018

For their winter wedding, Trixie and Sam were inspired by the resident pigs at their venue, South Farm in Cambridgeshire. As soon as they found out about them they decided that they had to incorporate them into the theme of the day. All the tables were named after different species with their own facts on the table markers. They added a tattoo/ rockabilly element with their choice of cake, place settings and the temporary tattoo station which was a huge hit with the guests.

Like many couples, Angela and Robin didn’t really have a theme in mind for their wedding - until they stepped back and realised what they had created once all their different elements came together! In the back of their minds, they knew that they wanted their wedding to have a fun, colourful, relaxed feeling that going to music and art festivals evokes, but just chose vendors, decorations and props that felt right to them, instead of to hit the theme.

All You Need is Love

September 19, 2018

Emma and Kevin wanted their wedding celebrations to reflect their lives, 'as if you'd just walked into their house', and I think they totally nailed it. A relaxed barn ceremony, a navy (non) wedding dress from Dorothy Perkins, and their two lurchers made their day super personalised and absolutely perfect for them. Bucking loads of traditions - which Emma wisely says "carry too much symbolic baggage", they got married on a Tuesday to save money. Oh, and they also had a beer blessing. So, y'know...

Holly and Toby wanted to forego the pomp and ceremony often surrounding weddings, and so chose to invite only their closest family and friends to their actual wedding day. They had a big party in the pub where they first met in for everyone else a month later. Not wanting a lot of fuss, they didn’t have an engagement, engagement rings or even tell anyone bar their nearest and dearest that they’d tied the knot until afterwards, wanting to maintain a degree of intimacy and privacy, and concentrate the process on their commitment to each other.

The inspiration for James and Cherry’s wedding was “doing it our way”, which for them meant colourful, informal and relaxed. They focused their attention to doing what they love - eating, drinking and dancing, and spent less time on the formal stuff. Doing the legal bit days before gave them the freedom for their day that they so craved. “We couldn’t even tell you the date we officially got married!” explained Cherry. “For us it was just a box ticking exercise - our wedding anniversary will always be the day we made a promise in front of our friends and family.”
