Adam & Barbara’s Day of the Dead, Cemetery Trash the Dress Photo Shoot

November 23, 2010

Adam & Barbara’s trash the dress shoot is like nothing I’ve ever seen! Day of the Dead make up fused with an awesome cemetery location made for something pretty special. The bride did the make up “It was a trial and error process,” she explained. “I looked up make up designs online and tried different ones to see which would look best with my (and my husband’s) facial structure, without looking too cluttered.  Since it was right before Halloween, I could find cream makeup almost anywhere, and picked up a few tubes, and some extra just in case I ran out.  I applied it with paint brushes, which helped so I could layer it on without it looking too thick. I had to apply three layers of white to give it a true white appearance, and if I hadn’t run out of time, I would’ve applied more.”

The couple, who said their wedding was a bit of a ‘toned-down’ version of them, wanted to do something really dramatic and something they’d always remember for their post-wedding shoot. “Our wedding was very calm, very pretty, very “toned down” from the route I would normally go,” Barbara continued. “We met at a Hot Topic store, started dating at a Halloween party, and got engaged at a rock Concert in California, but I wanted our families to feel comfortable, so I opted for only a few things that were on the darker side (mainly, the table that held my seating chart, which had Beetlejuice figures of “Barbara” and “Adam” and a twisted looking votive tree).”

“I wanted to do a Trash the Dress shoot because… well… you only live once, and I wanted to do something that I could remember, and look at the pictures down the road, and say “I’m glad I did that, that was so much fun”.  The Day of the Dead seemed like it would be really fun to do.  We wanted to do something completely non-traditional, something a little off-the-wall, something with a bit of shock value (which we definitely got when we went into town with the makeup on, plenty of stares, scared children, it was really funny), and this was the perfect opportunity.  We were actually planning on changing out of the Day of the Dead stuff and do a normal Trash the Dress shoot halfway through, but… it was too much fun, so we decided to stick with it.”

Cassie & Loc’s Multicultural, DIY Wedding

November 22, 2010

I actually featured a link to Cassie & Loc’s gorgeous wedding in Thursday Treats two weeks ago as I’ll be honest, with most of photographer Jonas Peterson’s weddings, I figured one of the big daddy American blogs would have snapped it up to feature instantly (this dude’s work is in high demand!) So you can imagine my surprise and excitement when I received an email from the bride to not only tell me I’d made her day by linking to her wedding, but that she was a huge Rock n Roll Bride fan and that she’d love for me to feature them. Score!

I’m sure Cassie won’t mind me sharing her initial email with you all. It made my heart melt!

“I got married to my wonderful, lovely, insanely sweet husband Loc about a month ago.  While the sunshine that cames from that is still hanging around my brain, I was SUPER excited to see a link to our little wedding on your blog post for Nov 11.  When we got engaged in 2008, I started stalking a couple of blogs.  Seriously stalking.  One was Jonas Peterson, who when we first contacted him, hadn’t shot a wedding ‘formally’.  And the second was yours!”

“What resonated so strongly with me about your blog is the idea that being yourself, not your family, not your friends, and certainly not the bridal industry, is worth more than can ever be expressed when it comes to your own wedding day.  Because Loc’s family is Vietnamese, and my Dad Italian, needless to say our 40 people, out in the country wedding was not at all what either of our families wanted for us.  And I say ‘for us’ because through all of the bickering and heated discussions, I learnt that all of these ‘wants’ that came from our family, came from their love.  And we are lucky that in the end they accepted what we wanted for the day and had an amazing time.  And more than that, that day, that beautiful, sun-smiling, psychotically windy day, was filled with our love for each other.  And you’re totally right.  Jonas is a freak. An amazing artistic, life-capturing freak, whose photos are a gift to us every time we look at them.  Noone else can make us physically feel as though we are there again, looking into each other’s eyes, feeling insanely in love, and all that other mushy mushy stuff, that hallmark card stuff that was our day.

Anyway enough gushing, onto the awesome wedding details! The couple got married at Loc’s family’s house in Sunnybank, Brisbane, and their western ceremony and reception took place at Branell Homestead in Laidley, Queensland. For the Vietnamese tea ceremony, Cassie wore a red Vietnamese dress called an áo dài. “It wasn’t a full-on traditional bridal one, but was equally as beautiful with little embroidered flowers and beading,” she told me. “It was purchased for me by Loc’s best friend’s Mother as a wedding present. Mum made a little hair-slide of red paper flowers, and I wore a pair of my late Nonna’s favorite gold earrings.”

Cassie’s second wedding dress was made by her Mother from an original 1960’s paper pattern, bought from tiddleywink VINTAGE on etsy. “Mum and I made heaps of changes as we went, adding a lace bodice, waistband and pockets,” explained Cassie. “Making the dress with my Mum was a wonderful, though slightly stressful experience, scalloping the lace using water glasses, googling how to sew pockets beside inseam zips, messing around with neckline and armhole bias’ and a plethora of other tricky things for us ‘un-couture’ sewers!  It was really trial and error… one picked to pieces toile, and about four not quite right bodices, lots of swearing and unpicking!  But it is a beautiful, beautiful dress that means more to me (and my Mum) than any store-bought, dressmaker-made dress could ever be.  Mum stitched a little ribbon into the pocket of my dress where I tied Loc’s wedding band, along side my vows (hand scribbled because our printer broke the night before the wedding), a hankie from Mum, and a quick-unpick (I realise as I was unpicking the stitches on the back of my Dad’s jacket just before the ceremony that I forgot to unpick the same stitches on Loc’s jacket, so I brought it with me to unpick after the ceremony!)  Mum also made her own beautiful red vintage-inspired two piece suit for the wedding, and while she is quick to downplay her cleverness, EVERYONE loved everything she did.”

The couple chose not to have bridesmaids or groomsmen, favouring it just being the two of them up there. “All of our family and friends are so important to us, and our wedding so intimate that we felt we didn’t need to single people out in that way.  It was a really beautiful and special thing for the two of us to be standing up there, just with each other, in front of the people that mean everything to us.  The whole bridal party thing is a tradition that just wasn’t something we wanted!  My best friends pictured in some of Jonas’ photos were my unofficial bridesmaids, they picked their outfits the night before the wedding from their own favourite things.  Loc’s two brother’s and his best friends wore their own suits.  They all looked so handsome and beautiful, so themselves, that if we had tried to plan it or ‘style’ it, it absolutely would have felt forced, and not just all of us together, celebrating this awesome time.  My girls wore gumboots most of the day, it had been raining solid for almost two weeks before the wedding and we all had kick ass gumboots.  I’m so glad that even though the sun came out the girls were themselves and comfortable in their wellies!!!”

“From the moment we began planning the wedding, we knew that we wanted it to be about us and our love,”concluded Cassie. “Neither of us wanted a cookie cutter wedding, where you could replace the head of the bride and groom and it would look like anyone’s wedding from any one of a million wedding magazines.  And while a lot of the ‘weddingy’ elements have remained, every little part of this journey has been for, by and about Loc and I, and the family and friends that we love.  And really, the ‘traditional’ parts that remained happened because they suited us and our love, and our family.”

At Home with the Rock n Roll Bride (and Groom!)

November 22, 2010

Over the summer I was contacted by Wedding Ideas Magazine who featured our wedding last year. They asked if we would like to take part in a ‘Where Are They Now?’ style feature, which we jumped at the chance to be involved with. One problem, they asked for some recent photographs of Me & Gareth…

Eeek. You see, when you work 8 days a week including doing lots of photo shoots, having nice photographs taken with your loved one isn’t something that regularly comes to mind – in fact believe me, without all that make up and styling I can often take a very bad photo! However luckily for us, my awesome friend Emma Case just happened to be visiting so I asked her if she’d be so kind as to take some shots of us. What lucky ducks we are.

When Emma and I discussed ideas for the shoot, I said how I didn’t want to do anything too styled or fancy. I just wanted some simple and sexy (well Gareth is pretty sexy if I do say so myself) photographs of the two of us. Doing them at home made sense as we could get the kittens involved too (although when it came to it, it was only Henry, the huge poser, who wanted to play model) and Emma’s laid back, fun style lent itself perfectly to what we had in mind.

So, we threw on some regular clothes, hung out in our slightly damp and overgrown autumnal garden and in our ‘lived in’ bedroom (Emma’s tactful way of saying ‘messy’ I think!) and snuggled and posed together. Gareth made out he was all nervous and didn’t really want to do it, but the sneaky boy totally got into it too (don’t believe him if he says otherwise!)

I hope you like these photos. These are without a doubt the photographs that show the ‘real me.’ No fancy make up artist or designer wedding dresses this time…oh and my hairband cost me £3 from Primark, loads of you have asked on Twitter where it was from! I only got it a few weeks ago, so if you hurry it may still be in there.

Our wedding will be re-visited in the January issue of  Wedding Ideas Magazine, and yes of course I’ll be posting it!

How to…Make Your Own Fabric Flower Bouquet (Tutorial by Josephine Sicad)

November 20, 2010

After featuring Josephine & Radney’s incredibly gorgeous and eclectic DIY wedding last week I was inundated with emails from you lot about the bride’s gorgeous DIY fabric flower bouquet. So I asked the lovely Josephine very nicely if she’d be so kind as to write a little tutorial for you. She was more than thrilled to oblige!

I’d love to see some more Rock n Roll Brides rocking down the aisle with one of these babies! Huge thanks to Josephine for working on this feature with me.

♥  ♥  ♥

The moment I started planning what to have for my wedding bouquet, I had already envisioned that it would be a little bit quirky. I was inspired by the vintage brooch bouquets I had seen a lot on Rock n Roll Bride. However, I didn’t have much budget to buy lots of new brooches. Luckily for me I came across a store that sold everything “3 for $10” and they sold lots of vintage style necklaces! I grew goosebumps when I saw the vintagey necklaces with beads and fabric flowers on them. so I then thought “why not detach the fabric flowers to form my very own wedding bouquet?!”

It was really quick and easy to make.

Materials:

Fabric flowers & assorted flower hair-clips (I would have loved fresh flowers but I wanted to have something I could keep forever)
Cotton twine
A few scraps of wool
Scissors
An egg beater/whisk (as you can imagine, it was such a ‘light-bulb’ moment when I thought of using it for the stem!)

Lowina & Philsy’s Incredible Double Wedding Celebration

November 19, 2010

When I laid eyes on Lowina & Philsy’s wedding the only thing I could said was “OMG so cute!” Seriously, you get that right? How adorable are they? Adorable in a kick ass Rock n Roll way though you understand…

The couple, who met in 2006 at a fashion trade show in Hong Kong, got married in Philsy’s parent’s back garden in Victoria, Australia. It was important to the pair to not only plan a gorgeous wedding but to make sure it truly reflected them as individuals as well as their Chinese heritage. They also were certain it had to be unique and fun!

In order to do this, DIY was very important to them. The couple made all their stationary, the guest book, decor and favours. The bride even made pearl earrings as gifts for every female guest and the t-shirts for her and her bridesmaids to wear in the morning! They asked friends and family to help where they could and they made the cupcakes and arranged all the flowers.

The wedding took place over two occasions and so the bride wore two dresses. The first, the white western dress was designed by the bride herself. She flew back to Hong Kong to have it made. She told me that doing it this was (including the flights!) was still cheaper than most custom dresses in Australia as it only ended up costing her $450! She also made pearl necklaces (she has her own etsy shop) for herself and her bridesmaids. Her fun accessories including the long gloves, the scarf and the long necklaces were from Diva. Her headpiece was also from etsy and her amazing shoes were from a Halloween costume shop!

After the wedding in Australia the couple flew to Hong Kong for the (slightly) more traditional Chinese part of the wedding. They had a massive party for all their family in Hong Kong who were unable to fly to Australia for the actual wedding. Chinese tradition says that the bride should wear a red and gold dress in a Chinese style for the main dress plus another 5 or 6 (!) colourful dresses for the evening party. Lowina didn’t want to do this so she hired a more modern style red and gold dress to wear which only ended up costing her $120! Plus she wore it with 4″ platform black shoe boots with metal stubs and sparkly black tights!

Rock n Roll!

Becci & Chris’ Funky, Retro, London Wedding

November 19, 2010

The slinky, sparkly vintage-inspired Topshop (yes really!) dress was what grabbed my attention when I first laid eyes on Becci & Chris’ retro styled London wedding. However when I saw the rest of their day I was utterly smitten. The pair, who never wanted a traditional wedding, were set on creating something within budget and to suit their funky London lifestyle.

I spoke to Becci about their wedding and I’m so thrilled to share their amazing wedding and all their quirky details with you today.

“Chris and I live and love London, so it was always going to be our number one location for getting hitched,” she began. “Budget constraints – and the fact that a meringue dress, tiara and dainty white kitten heels were my idea of hell – meant that we had to be inventive while planning our big do. We wanted something that represented us as a couple, and our personalities, and felt strongly that we wouldn’t follow wedding procedure just because.”

“We decided on Islington Town Hall for our ceremony and quickly fell in love with The Vine as our reception venue. It’s cool retro interior, gorgeous Italian grub, intimate conservatory and super-calm landlord, James, meant it won over Chris and I as soon as we walked in. We work in the magazine publishing industry, so we strongly agreed that our photographer needed to be super talented and super creative. Enter Ian Johnson. After meeting up for a few pints and a briefing, we both knew that we’d got the right man. Ian did not let us down. Despite the time constraints of us marrying fairly late at 4pm, he achieved all the money shots.”

“For the dress I wanted a slinky evening number. Never did I think that, while browsing Topshop’s website, would I stumble across my dream dress – antique silver, sequinned, slight fishtail, deep V front, backless… I was in love. Yes, it was high street but I couldn’t afford anything designer and I received so many compliments from guests thinking it was vintage… I just kept my mouth shut! A veil was never going to suit my style but I still wanted a wow-factor headpiece. I turned to milliner extraordinaire Louis Mariette who understood completely my vision and created something truly special. As for Chris, he wanted a fitted suit with a Mod influence so he took a trip to Jump the Gun in Brighton. For my bridesmaids, I wanted them to look drop-dead gorgeous (no peach taffeta, ta very much). To complement my dress and Chris’s suit, I was after a navy, corseted, strapless style – the All Saints Freja dress came up with the goods.”

“We all stayed at Hoxton Hotel the night before and, on the big day, our wedding cars consisted of a duck egg VW camper van– the bouncy suspension and a bottle of fizz nearly ruined mine and the bridesmaids dresses on the drive to the Town Hall! – and the obligatory cheesy Routemaster. For my flowers, I wanted simple and elegant so I went for a cala lily bouquet and a pared-back white and green theme. Personal touches included haggling over a massive shabby chic mirror at Portobello Road then writing the seating plan on this; and my mum kindly baking glitter-sprinkled heart biscuits as favours for everyone to dip in the yummy dark chocolate mousse dessert (we vetoed a traditional wedding cake as it just wasn’t what we wanted). What else went down well with our guests? Well, our party photo booth from Snappabox had a queue all night, while our ‘Love story’ booklet, complete with cartoon Chris & Bex, brought everyone up to speed on our relationship history.”

“And the final Rock n Roll moments? How about the groom not getting to bed until 6am on the morning of the big day (still a sensitive topic around the Hodgson kitchen table) or us newlyweds heading to East Village in Hoxton for a post-wedding clubbing session. Well, I was wearing Topshop after all…”

Incredible! I am so chuffed to have these guys rocking all over the blog today.

Photography Friday – Rachel Goes 3D

November 19, 2010

Rachel had been feeling a little miffed that Henry was getting more blog/twitter love than her. The quieter and more reserved kitten, she was often pushed to the side in the fame stakes due to Henry’s ridiculous and hilarious daily antics. “I know,” she thought “I’ll slip on these 3D glasses Mummy got in the post last week from her friend Amma…that will get me some air time.”

She was right you know.

Shalma & Leo’s 1950’s Inspired Candy Anthony Wedding

November 18, 2010

Shalma & Leo are what I like to call friends of the blog. Not only did they find photographer David McNeil though a feature on Rock n Roll Bride, but I featured their gorgous A Bout de Souffle engagement session over the summer AND myself and the bride have exchanged regular emails ever since they got engaged about all things wedding! So when David asked if I wanted to feature them …well he didn’t have to ask twice!

“I am so pleased that you think my wedding is Rock n Roll enough for your website,” Shalma wrote. “I would love for you to blog it! I have to say this again, but your blog has been such immense help over the past year. When I got engaged every childhood dream I had of the full Indian wedding just wasn’t an option anymore. To find a wedding site which thrives on individuality and the boldness to do what you want is refreshing and fun.”

Shalma wore a Candy Anthony dress – the first one she laid eyes on! “My dress was the first one I saw in the shop and I knew that was the one,” she explained. “I tried on about 5 before hand (even the leopard print one which is gorgeous) but I kept going back to that one. They also made my fascinator in the same fabric. To keep with the 50’s theme, my Mother in law very kindly gave me her Mother’s vintage 50’s pearl necklace with a diamante clasp. It’s stunning I was really honoured that she wanted me to have it. At my hen party all the girls pitched in and brought me my Tiffany pearl earrings to match.  I was so touched that they all did that for me I couldn’t believe it. Luckily I had the shoes already which made the whole outfit complete!”

However for this Rock n Roll wedding it wasn’t just the bride who stole the show. The super stylish Leo was also certain that he didn’t want to look like every other groom. “Its so difficult for grooms to find something that isn’t your generic penguin suit,” Shalma said. “He also can’t buy anything off the rack so finding somewhere that does cheap tailor made suits was hard.  He wanted a herringbone textured 3 piece suit in a brownish colour. There’s a great website called A Suit That Fits. They are brilliant. You pick the fabric, style, lining, everything and its made to measure.”

The couple didn’t want an obvious theme for their wedding, they just wanted to keep it simple, beautiful and perfect for them. “We both wanted to do things our way. We had a small budget and we’re both very creative so a lot of the design work was done by us. We basically wanted to incorporate all of our favourite things. I made my own bunting and cushion covers out of Indian silks brought from Southall. That was so much fun. I love Southall. I probably made 4 trips there in total and brought yards of coloured fabric, ribbons, jewellery. It was an epic task and so much fun.  Leo designed our invitations and he also designed the cocktail menus. We made a photo guest book using funny pictures of everyone.  We gave the kids little party bags so they had stuff to play with on the day. We painted glass jars different colours which were used for the flowers and candles.  Leo’s sister made our red velvet wedding cake which tasted amazing! We had a playlist on our ipod made up of our guest favourite songs which worked really well. We only had 1 bridesmaid and groomsmen each. My bridesmaid’s wore a dress from Coast which matched my petticoat, shoes from Carvela and the sash was brought from Candy Anthony. The groomsmen wore his own suit.”

Jennifer & Adam’s Tennessee Treat

November 18, 2010

I’m featuring less engagement sessions than I used to at the moment. Mainly because I’m getting so many awesome weddings to feature from you lot that I simply haven’t got the time to share as many as I’d like. However, when I see a session like Jennifer & Adam’s, I remember that rules are meant to be broken!  The pair chose the location for their shoot because it was the very place that Cas Walker originally broadcast Dolly Parton on the radio  – and I’m reliably informed that this is a big deal in Tennessee, maybe like The Beatles here in the UK!?

The couple are getting married in Knoxville next summer and from the look of these shots, their wedding is going to be nothing short of epic!

Mel & Mark’s Rule Britannia Rock n Roll Wedding

November 17, 2010

I’ve got another authentic Rock n Roll couple for you today…and by authentic I mean actual readers of Rock n Roll Bride. My favourite weddings to feature are those of couples who actually read and loved Rock n Roll Bride throughout their wedding planning. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside!

Melanie & Mark, who were lucky enough to find their photographer’s McKinley-Rodgers Photography via a feature on this here blog, got married Burgh House followed by a Rule Britannia style reception at The Britannia Pub in London.

Mel’s dress was a really family heirloom made by her Great Great Aunt a couple of years before WWII and also worn by her Great Aunt and Grandmother at their own weddings. With this vintage classic gown she accessorised with Mark’s Grandmother’s engagement ring, earrings from Tatty Devine and a “yes” necklace from Zoe and Morgan.

Sarah & Pete’s Classy Vintage-Inspired Wedding

November 17, 2010

Sarah & Pete’s classy, vintage-inspired wedding took place at Stoke Newington Town Hall and The Tab Centre, Shoreditch. The bride, who originally didn’t even want a wedding dress wore a gorgeous Temperley number that she found in Bicester Village outlet mall just outside of Oxford. “I don’t really like wedding dresses!” she told me. “I was nearly going to buy a nice party dress in a bright colour after trying on quite a few wedding dresses which were just ‘ok’. I then spotted this one in Bicester. It is quite vintagey in style but still flattering (and not tiny weeny sizes like a lot of original vintage dresses!)”  With this she wore a hair piece by Jenny Packham and vintage Gina shoes from Urban Outfitters.

A lot of DIY elements went into the reception decor, including the hand made candles in vintage tea cups which were not only gorgeous, but acted as favours for the guests to take home.

Laurel and Ryan’s Handcrafted, Alice-Bright, Alice in Wonderland Wedding Shoot

November 17, 2010

Laurel and Ryan’s DIY pre-wedding shoot took place in Ryan’s parent’s back garden (which just happened to have a few acres of land behind it!) I utterly adore the acid neon brights fused with an Alice in Wonderland theme, all of which was created by the bride & groom themselves. They bought the cupcakes from a grocery store and created all of the flower centrepieces themselves, again from store bought flowers.

The bouquets and boutonnieres were professionally made, but for the most part the entire photo shoot was their own unique vision and craft.

Killer!

Sammy & Ian’s Modern Romantic London Wedding

November 16, 2010

Sammy & Ian went for a quirky, modern and London theme for their Soho wedding. Being a costume designer, the bride made her own dress based on the late 50’s early 60’s silhouette of tight and knee length, with a bit of Vivienne  Westwood influence. “It was made from red silk Dupion, and the corset was white duchess satin with red silk ribbon stripes sewn on top,” she explained.

Sammy also designed Ian’s unusual and fabulous suit which was made out of venetian wool and was based on a 1960’s design.

The couple hired a red London bus to take their guests from Marylebone town hall, where their ceremony took place, through London to Century on Shaftesbury Avenue for their casual and fun reception. They didn’t want a sit down traditional meal and so instead had barbecue style finger food. They drank raspberry champagne cocktails and pink punch.

Michelle & Chris’ October Elopement

November 16, 2010

10.10.10 was the date for Michelle & Chris’ perfect elopement. The pair, who didn’t want a big wedding, headed out to Immaculata University, Malvern, PA with their photographer Simmone Von Sydney and her boyfriend Micheal. The four of them set up the beautiful ceremony and post-wedding photo shoot.

“To us, Rock n Roll means going against tradition”, Shell told me. “When I say this, I mean having an elaborate Princess style wedding with full on glitz and glamor. The glitz and glamor, in our eyes, is each other. We are just so in love and wanted a really great experience. I feel very full and content with how the day went. Almost everything in the photos were brought in by the 4 of us. Simmone and Michael have a keen eye for vintage style, and I fully trust their taste.”

Leigh & Brian’s Incredible Cemetery Wedding

November 16, 2010

I featured Leigh & Brian’s ridiculously awesome engagement shoot back in June – you’ll remember it, it was the one with the bed in a river! So, you can imagine my excitement when their photographer Hollie sent me the couple’s  recent wedding – they got married in a cemetery! The bride is a writer herself and so she wrote me a bit of an essay on their amazing wedding. It’s ace though so I wanted to share all her thoughts here with you.

“Oh my lord, where to even begin?  It was all just awesome, and our friends, family, and planners really thought of everything, from the “‘Till Death Do They Part”, Day of the Dead-themed engagement party, to the tombstone-shaped chocolates my mom made for our out-of-town guests,” she began. “We had such a great time, and I think everyone really enjoyed our crazy cemetery wedding.”

“I think we’re Rock n Roll because we did something that meant a lot to us, even though we knew we’d probably get some raised eyebrows.  And I also think we’re rock ‘n roll because we were able to pull off a completely unique event while still keeping our guests in mind — even though we were in an unconventional location, we made sure people were comfortable, and that they had refreshments, fans, and plenty of seating before and during the ceremony.  We had shuttles to take people to and from the ceremony site, and transportation for people inside the cemetery, if they had difficulty with the stone pathways.  Basically, we wanted to do it our way, but we didn’t want to do it at the expense of everyone’s comfort, and I think we did a good job of making our cemetery wedding a blast for everyone.”

“Overall, we went with a “vintage Savannah” theme; we wanted something unique and personal, but we also wanted to incorporate a lot of traditional Southern elements.  The location was definitely traditional and Southern – the ceremony was held on Lion’s Field in Historic Oakland Cemetery, in the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta.  Oakland is Atlanta’s first city cemetery, and was designed in the Victorian garden style; it’s a beautiful place, with old stone pathways, gorgeous mausoleums, elaborate statuary, and plenty of trees and flowers.  The field where we were married is actually hundreds of unmarked graves of Civil War soldiers, and has three enormous old magnolias shading part of the area.”

“We did a ceremony in the round, which meant the chairs were arranged to circle where Brian and I stood, with four aisles between the chairs; each aisle was marked by a pair of urns filled with hydrangea, dusty miller, and Spanish moss (to go with the Southern theme; all our bouquets had the same flowers, but with added gardenia, so they smelled unbelievable).  They erected iron gatework around the ceremony area, and covered that in vines, moss, and candles; we also had a refreshment table under one of the magnolias (where they served our signature drink, a lime, cucumber, and mint blend we called the “Bobby Jones” — Bobby’s grave is in the cemetery), and they hung a chandelier filled with candles in the tree above the bar.  Buses were taking people to the ceremony site, and because some guests would be getting there early, we had passed h’ors d’ouerves and robin’s egg blue silk fans on every chair, with a little note attached, telling everyone to stay cool.”

“After the ceremony (which was performed by a judge friend of ours), we’d arranged guided tours of the cemetery for anyone who was interested in seeing more of the place (it’s enormous, with 70,000 people buried there, and I didn’t want people feeling like they’d only seen a portion of it) — I’d coordinated the tours ahead of time with the Oakland director, and had people mark on their RSVP cards if they wanted to participate.  On our wedding day, the cemetery docents surprised us by dressing up in Victorian period costumes (which was awesome!) to lead the groups around the grounds; afterward, we heard rave reviews about the docents, and how interesting the tours had been.  People who didn’t go on the tours were taken straight to the reception location. where a cocktail hour was being held; meanwhile, we and the wedding party traipsed through the cemetery, taking roughly one million photographs.”

“We held the reception at the Wimbish Mansion in midtown Atlanta — it’s a gorgeous old stone home just sitting in the middle of the city, and it has a fabulous ballroom from the 1920’s, which we loved.  We wanted to tie in the cemetery theme, but without being too obvious about it, so we used the Bird Girl of Savannah — she was the little girl statue that used to be in Savannah’s Bonaventure Cemetery (the one that was made famous by Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil), and we had a copy of her for the centerpiece of the buffet table.  The (amazing) food had the same Southern influence – there was the standard prime rib and whatnot, but we also had fried chicken and a mac and cheese bar, plus a ton of vegan options (including a vegan groom’s cake that people went crazy over).  For the father/daughter dance, we chose an old song from my dad’s favorite movie, and I surprised him with a fake mustache (I wore one, too), a top hat and cape, and dressed him up as an old-time movie villain, which he loved – he kept the get-up on for the rest of the night.”

“More fun reception touches included the photo booth, which we filled with vintage hats, mustaches, and other props (we got our mustaches and glasses-on-a-stick from MaroDesignson etsy).  Instead of having a guest book, we had a vintage framed chalkboard in the booth (which was purchased from RevivedVintage, also on etsy), so guests could be photographed with their personal messages to us.  For the bouquet toss, I made a bouquet out of scratch-off lottery tickets, and attached a penny to one of the ribbons — we announced that the toss was for anyone who wanted to get lucky, and it was actually caught by one of the groomsmen, who was so excited that he ran a victory lap around the ballroom immediately afterward.”

“Finally, when it was time to go, everyone was given a plastic egg filled with birdseed for our exit toss — for these, Brian and I bought a ton of plastic white Easter eggs, spray painted them (and a good portion of the driveway; oops) blue, then added brown “spots” with a spray bottle of thinned paint.  Everyone tossed the birdseed at us as we came down the stairs outside (I was still finding birdseed in my hair two days later), and the night finished with Brian and I leading a parade of guests down Peachtree Street and back to the hotel for a little post-partying, behind a (very tolerant) younger guest who carried a “Just Married” flag.  We walked into the hotel bar, and the people there gave us a standing ovation; it was the perfect ending to an absolutely perfect day, and now I totally want to do it all over again.”

Yep, totally awesome huh!? I love these guys!

Free Wedding Photography Contest Winners – Gaelyn & John’s English Country Picnic with a Mexican Flair

November 15, 2010

I have been waiting over a year to see Gaelyn & John’s wedding – a year! Long term readers of Rock n Roll Bride may recognise this couple as the lucky pair who won free wedding photography by Love me Do Photography from a contest I ran back in October 2009. It was one of the closest contests I’ve ever ran but needless to say, I know these two totally deserved to win! And now I get to share their awesome wedding photographs with you today. EXCITED!

The theme for the wedding was “English country picnic with a Mexican flair”. The couple described their vision perfectly in their winning entry and it’s so awesome to see it come to life now! “I like to refer to our wedding as English country picnic with a Mexican flair,” they explained. “A ‘marriage’ (if you will) of both our backgrounds. There will be gingham and tea as well as hand cut papel picados (Mexican paper banners) by yours truly, and tamales from a small family run bakery.”

The wedding took place at John’s parent’s 1920’s beach cottage in Carpinteria California. “We have shared many good times there and really love the place and thought it would make an amazing location for both the wedding and the reception,” explained Gaelyn. “We love that it is beautiful, intimate, charming, vintage and rustic. The small beach town has another well known original beach cottage down the street that is a vacation house known as the Linden house, we rented it for myself and my bridesmaids, and took a few photos there as well.”

“Our personal aesthetic is that we tend to like things that seem to have a history to them or an evidence of hand, we are drawn towards vintage and craft but like for things to still feel modern. Our wedding was very collaborative and hands on. We have so many talented friends and family, and we really wanted to showcase their talents as well. They helped do everything from the flowers, silk screening invites, baking desserts, building our website, embroidering our groomsmen’s pocket squares, sewing…the list goes on and on. It really was amazing to have them all involved. It really was great to look out on your big day and not only think “hell yes, this looks awesome” but also be reminded of all of the amazing people who have supported you along the way.”

“I designed the invites, save the dates and thank yous myself. I had a friend silkscreen the art side, and then I had custom rubber stamps made for the info side, and sealed the envelopes with a red heart wax seal, and hand addressed them myself. I spent countless hours spray painting things white ( you really can make anything look good when you spray paint it white!) For example, countless empty pickle jars (I cant explain John’s love for pickles and I wont even try, but lets just say I was able to save up A LOT of pickle jars), when spray painted with a candle inside they looked like porcelain, I also painted an ugly wood/brass 70’s chandelier to hang in the tree, some photo frames, an old mirror I found discarded on the streets of SF, mismatched crystal candelabras (made them look entirely new and modern) etc. It was a great cheap way to not only tie things together, but really make use of things, that one might otherwise overlook.”

“I pulled fabric over embroidery hoops and hand painted our wedding crest logo as well as each of our silhouettes, it looked great as decoration hanging on the front fence at the wedding and made an awesome keepsake. I also hand cut the papel picados (Mexican tissue paper banners) that hung at the front of the house myself with two love birds and our wedding date. We did the entire wedding ourselves, it was a lot of hard work, but in the end we loved ever detail and wouldn’t have changed a thing.”

The bride wore a vintage dress from Timeless Vixen Vintage on etsy which she bought for just $380! “I started looking really early on, knowing that I wanted vintage, and that finding what I wanted, in my size, might take some time,” she continued. “Surprisingly I found the dress right away, it was just what I wanted and the measurements happened to match mine exactly. I bought it, without the option of trying it on first, crossed my fingers and waited for it to arrive. Amazingly enough, the dress fit like a glove and didn’t even need any alterations!”

What a fabulous wedding! I am so pleased that Carina & Amanda from Love Me Do Photography and I were able to help these guys get the awesome photographs they deserve too. Enjoy the photos! Do I have the best readers or what!?

Gealyn & John run their own video company, What We Do Films, be sure to check out their adorable video (after the jump) which they played out at their reception. What an awesome idea!

The Rock n Roll Bride Venue Guide – Manchester

November 13, 2010

Following the popularity of the first The Rock n Roll Bride Venue Guide, written by wedding planner and stylist Mary Herrington of Forever & Ever Events, I was keen to ask her if she’d be willing to do a bit of travelling for us and do some venue guides for the rest of the country. This month, Mary visited Manchester to bring you her reviews of the most kick ass venues for your Rock n Roll wedding!

♥  ♥  ♥

Following the great response to my first venue post on London’s Rock n Roll reception venues, I now take you up north to Manchester, where the city and surrounding areas offer a truly eclectic mix of inspiring venues for a Rock n Roll wedding.  As I did in my London venues post, my approach here is to recommend a variety of venues across the spectrum of budgets and aesthetics, from very cool historical architecture to vintage modern interior design to contemporary and modern dance halls.  Remember that no matter where you have your wedding, if you put your personal stamp on it, the venue will come alive.

So here are 10 Rock n Roll venues in Manchester that I highly suggest you check out:

1. The Deaf Institute

Any Mancunian with an interest in live music will already know of The Deaf Institute.  What they may not know is that this music hall and café can be hired for a wedding reception and that the summer months – when most couples are wanting to get married – are the slower months for this music venue and therefore the time when they have greater availability for weekend hire!  This isn’t some smoky dive pit of a music venue – rather, The Deaf Institute is known for its extremely stylish interior: damask and Dolly Parton wallpaper, cuckoo clocks, parrot-patterned walls, velvet seats, chandeliers and vintage modern furniture.  The Music Hall has a huge disco ball, its own bar, stage, sound equipment, glass balcony, and theatre seating area. The Basement Bar is great for more intimate weddings and can also be hired out for private parties – great for hen night karaoke or a private cocktail bartending class.  Prices vary depending on the date, but you can either hire out individual rooms (from about £1,000 for weeknights to about £2,000 for weekends) or hire out the entire venue at about £2,850 and host up to 600 guests!  And being fans of Rock n Roll Bride themselves, they will offer a free meal to couples interested in booking their wedding reception – simply email info@foreverandeverevents.com for more information.

The Deaf Institute, 135 Grosvenor Street, Manchester M1 7HE, 0161 276 9350.

Sheila & Austin’s Small & Intimate Peacock Themed Destination Wedding

November 12, 2010

Mis-matched jewel tones and a peacock theme were the order of the day for Sheila & Austin’s small and intimate wedding. The couple  found the planning of their destination wedding in St. Petersburg difficult and enlisted the help of the bride’s Mother with all the organisations but really put their hearts and souls into creating the prefect wedding.

There were mishaps and hilarious moments but at the end of the day Sheila told me that none of that mattered as they were just so pleased to be getting married. “Don’t sweat the small stuff when it gets close to the wedding,” she told me. “That being said if you have the time customize your wedding, for me it was a great creative outlet. We handmade everything except for the food really. The hardest being we hand made our beach reed, peacock centerpiece wreaths. Luckily I only needed 6! As far as centerpiece tools I got the peacock feathers from eBay and reeds from TJMAX. Just dismantled other decorative house pieces. And my menu holders were picture frames. Really look everywhere for inspiration!”

“Basically we did things our way. We had non-traditional readings, video game music for ceremony music (Final Fantasy VII Piano Collection), sneakers for the grooms, a blue prom dress as a wedding dress, only 56 people attending (did an earlier dance for all our other friends), DJed it ourselves, had a honeymoon registry, had people RSVP via online (greener and cheaper!), designed everything ourselves & honestly didn’t give a care what people thought! But everyone loved it because it was us, and they were here to support us. And we were so happy to have done it.”

“Really as I see my other friends in their wedding processes, and it was a piece of advice someone gave me, all I have to say is this is the one party that you throw that is about you and your husband not everyone else. Have fun, don’t feel ashamed for your tastes & just have a blast!”
