Seventies Disco Meets Vegas Casual in Melbourne

Gold and Grit

August 14, 2019

The the beginning of their engagement, Cleone and Richard were planning a more traditional wedding, but the stress and overwhelm of planning a big day soon made Cleone miserable. “Once we decided to stop planning for the sake of everyone else it became very easy,” said Cleone. “Neither of us like the spotlight, so a small gathering was perfect for us.”

They decided to plan the wedding around 8 weeks before the day, deciding not to tell anyone that wasn’t invited that they were getting married and swearing their guests to secrecy. Having to make a lot of decisions short notice stopped the couple agonising over minute details, and meant that they needed to put a lot of faith in their chosen vendors; thankfully it all paid off!

“Casual Unicorns” Wedding Planned in Three Months

Fiona Higgins Photography

February 22, 2018

It’s not everyday that you get a first look involving a unicorn mask, but for Stuart and Angelica that was one of their must-haves – and quite rightly so. Their July wedding, described as “casual unicorns” with a dash of Scottishness, was organised in three months, and mostly long distance across the Atlantic too. Despite that, it also features a secret Alice in Wonderland twist and some pretty incredible gothic architecture too.

“Our day was set in the beautiful architecture of Glasgow City Chambers Building, smack in the middle of Glasgow”, said Angelica. “it had a very unique feel to it from the start. We sat all the family down in the Kelvin Room of the ceremony building whilst I arrived with my bridesmaids and went into a private room for our first look. We’re both very happy we did the first look before walking down the aisle, as we’re pretty sure one of us would have fainted!”

And you might faint when you see the photos – Stuart and Angelica both wore masks for their first look, and giant rubber unicorn and horse masks at that. Stuart explains: “When we met in Australia we both had these stupid masks on, so we incorporated them into the first look, and this inspired the unicorn association.” Underneath that unicorn mask, Angelica has some pretty rad hair herself – with gorgeous lilacs and blue-y tones it reminds us of the Northern lights, and this smoky purple colour palette continued into her outfit. Alongside a bunch of lavender, Angelica wore a blue stoned ring borrowed from her cousin, and her grey-toned wedding dress was a lace-topped David’s Bridal design, upcycled using her sister’s prom dress and a belt and bow made from tartan scraps (leftover from Stuart’s kilt).

Intimate & Sparkly Desert Vow Renewal

Brittany Warren Photography

December 5, 2017

Karina and Kellard met at a Halloween party in 2005 and were married in the summer of 2012. Five years later, on their wedding anniversary, they decided to renew their vows in Las Vegas.

The ceremony (unfortunately not photographed) took place in Sloan, NV, situated 18 miles southwest of Las Vegas. “This was our 5 year anniversary vow renewal”, said the bride. “Our inspiration was Vegas, the desert and doing something Intimate and sexy.”

“On our wedding day my husband promised me that he would love me until the end of his days, So I asked that he and I share new vows every five years. I love to be dramatic, fun and unique! He plays along because he loves seeing me happy and I can’t thank him enough.”

Karina designed her own dress and had it made by First Impression Sewing and Alterations. “My dress was one of the most unique things about our renewal. I designed it myself.”

Glamorous Vintage Wedding: Cecilia & Stuart

Assassynation

May 15, 2014

CeciliaStuAssassynation-10327

Cecilia and Stuart’s Glasgow wedding was pure vintage glamour – with a big dollop of pin up rockabilly cool thrown in for good measure! The couple were married at St Patricks church and their reception was held at Sloans, Gasgow’s oldest bar and restaurant.

“We tried to keep the wedding cheap, cheerful and small”, wrote the beautiful bride. “We only had 40 guests during the day. We spent the most money on the bands, car and our photographer. I had seen Sassy’s work on a few wedding blogs and I knew it had to be her to photograph our wedding. She was so friendly and accommodating in communication – we knew immediately that we had made the right choice and that was only confirmed when we met her and Millie the night before at the rehearsal.”

CeciliaStuAssassynation-10070

“We chose to have the ceremony at a local church, as it is where I grew up. My grampa, who I was very close to, passed away a year ago this month; he attended that church for many decades. He and my gran were also married there in 1951. It was our little way of including him in the day.”

Thursday Treats: January Has Been Kicking My Butt

January 10, 2013

07extreme-beauty-penn-yves-saint-laurent-blouse_18100378405

Photography: Irving Penn for Vogue

January has been kicking my butt. I’m not going to lie, I’ve actually shocked myself with how much I’ve got going on this month. No sooner had we ticked over to the first day of the year and I was relaunching my website (thanks for all your feedback by the way – and to any of you who might have be experiences problems viewing the full site –  read this) announcing new dates for The Blogcademy, getting featured (and writing for!) Cosmopolitan … oh and planning a whirlwind trip to Paris with my BFFs (more on this soon!)

And then I realised, “Oh crap Gala & Shauna fly in NEXT WEEK for the London Blogcademy’s. HOW THE HELL AM I GOING TO GET EVERYTHING DONE BEFORE THEN?!”

I’m not complaining of course. I’m so incredibly lucky to have so much going on, and I hate seeing “woe is me I’m so busy!” posts as much as the next person, but I’d be lying if I said I felt the next few weeks were going to be easy. But I’ll get it all done… I know I will.

So just a little heads up: for time that Gala & Shauna are here, I’ll be mostly offline and will be taking a brief hiatus from Thursday Treats & Business Bites. Don’t despair though, there will still be daily wedding content being published as well as Green Room goodness in abundance! Thursday Treats will be back on 7th February and Business Bites on 8th. Gosh, and then it’s almost Valentine’s Day!!

2013, slow down already!

Oh and before I forget – my first piece for Cosmopolitan was published this week. You can read my 2013 wedding trends predictions here. Thank you again Cosmo!

A Modern Art Themed Wedding & a Bride with Dreadlocks: Chris & Angela

August 7, 2012

“Arty & creative” replied Chris & Angela when I asked them to describe their wedding theme. “Lots of people on the day used words like ‘informal’ and ‘relaxed’ as well which was nice as it was what we kind of wanted. We were glad they picked up on it.”

The June wedding was held at Underley Grange Cottage in the Lake District. The couple homemade as much as possible, including all the reception decor. “Where do I begin with explaining the DIY?” laughed Angela. “Pretty much everything in the reception room was homemade. One of our favourite things was decorating parasols in the style of modern artists and hanging them from the ceiling. We made our own invitations – including hand making the actual paper! It turned out to be quite a saga; that and folding a hundred paper cranes for the RSVPs was quite a lot of work! On the plus side, as a milliner, the wedding was a great excuse to make lots of fun hats and fascinators for everyone.”

“I loved the parasols”, took over Chris. “The string chandeliers also looked great, but they consumed our kitchen and garage for about two months! I loved getting help from friends and family at each stage. Everyone saw little bits in the run up, but so many people said that on the day they couldn’t believe how it all fit together.”

“I don’t know that we ever thought we were doing our wedding ‘differently’,” the groom continued. “We just wanted to do it… ‘us’. We always knew we wanted more control over our wedding than the standard ‘here you go, Mr. Hotel…’ so we found a venue that could accommodate us doing our own catering and decorations. Once we saw Underley Grange, we just fell in love with the place and all the ideas seemed to flow naturally from there. The modern art idea was just so fun! We needed something to bring it all together and it just seemed right. Exploring all the artists to come up with the various designs was awesome!”

Alice in Weddingland – The Perfect Punk Rock Princess Dress

December 6, 2010

For most brides-to-be the dress is the number one most important thing they’ll choose for their weddings. In fact in the mind’s of many girls it’s the most important dress they’ll ever wear so getting it just right is key. This month, our resident intern Alice talks about her hunt for the perfect punk rock princess wedding dress…and one that wouldn’t break the bank! (and I’m pretty chuffed that I was able to help her out with that one)

Enjoy, and as always, show some love in your comments…

♥  ♥  ♥

I’ll be perfectly honest with you; a wedding dress was never high on my to-do list when it came to planning my own wedding.  In fact, until I went to the Designer Wedding Show I had never even seen a wedding dress in the flesh before!  Through watching their Designer catwalk show I was able to see examples of all the things that were previously foreign to me, and began to develop my own ‘bridal taste’.  I knew from one look that the Delphine Manivet short dresses were right up my street, and that the Lisa Redman dresses were perfectly whimsical and modern at the same time.  I was like a kid in a candy shop!

I fell in love with the gorgeous short dresses from the Lisa Redman range

Delphine Manivet ‘s dresses are the perfect mix of quirky and classic but with a hefty price tag!

Alice in Weddingland at The Designer Wedding Show, October 2010

October 20, 2010

A few weeks ago myself and the lovely Rock n Roll Bride intern, Alice, headed to The Designer Wedding show. I asked her if she’d like to write the report for me as I felt that her opinion on the show (as a bride-to-be) would be much more interesting for you..especially those of you who might be a little afraid of the whole ‘bridal show experience.

I’m not going to lie, the big shows can be hella scary – but this smaller and more intimate wedding show is actually very pleasant- there are no scary brides running around with clipboards (give me strength!) or manic and desperate suppliers trying to shove leaflets in your face. Think champagne reception, clean white stalls and super friendly and creative wedding suppliers.

Alice wrote about some of her favourites. Photos by us both (although we were a bit rubbish and didn’t take nearly enough…we were having too much fun to work!)

♥   ♥   ♥

So when Mrs Rock n Roll Bride asked me if I was going to the Designer Wedding Show, I was forced to face my biggest wedding fear; the bridal show.  To make matters even more complicated this was no ordinary bridal show-this was the designer version.  Sloany girls with their pushy mums immediately jumped into my head, along with the worry of disapproving looks from snobby vendors as a scruffy tattooed bride to be stopped by to have a look.  Needless to say, I was doubtful that I would fit in, and that in turn there would be nothing there to tempt to (or within my price range!)  However I bit the bullet and told Kat I’d be there.  I bought my ticket online, and booked the day off work.  The countdown was on until D-day; Designer Wedding madness day!

The day started smoothly with the complimentary shuttle bus picking me up from Sloane Street station.  I was pleasantly surprised by the other brides on the bus..aside from the odd exception decked out in their Joules finery, most of them seemed, well, normal. A very pleasant surprise!  The show was being held in Battersea Park, and so a quick journey across the river and we were there.  The first thing that hit me was the pleasant sound of an opera-singing pianist performing, well, I’m not quite sure what exactly what it was, but suffice to say it was along the lines of a jazzed-up Kaiser chiefs style number!  Ha, it was a brilliant start to the day!
