May The 4th Be with You: Star Wars, Terry Pratchett, A Blue Wedding Dress & A Pregnant Bride

Meet Tesni and Andrew: Married on May 4th, they had small touches of Star Wars throughout the day, but also included their other favourite movies and novels (lots of Terry Pratchett!) in the table names and decorations. The pregnant bride chose to wear blue as a nod to their son who was due two months after the wedding… And, even better, she found it for £500 in a closing down sale!

The day had an elegant, vintage and timeless feel, but also feel personalised and very ‘them’. “Our wedding theme was to just tell our story – eclectic, personal and slightly geeky!” said the bride.

The ceremony was originally planned for outside, but to make things easier for the seven-month pregnant Tesni, they moved it indoors to the great hall at Plas Dinam Country House at the last minute. “Its stunning moulded ceiling and deep coral walls went perfectly with our colour scheme”, she explained, “and everyone staying in the house had eaten a pre-wedding dinner made by my mum in there the night before so it just felt completely relaxed.”

A Cancelled Wedding & An Elopement Planned in Three Weeks

Holly and Robbie originally planned a big, vegan wedding for all their loved ones. They had nearly everything booked but as they were about to start IVF they decided the pressure was getting all too much and they cancelled. They then decided to elope instead and planned it all in less than a month!

“Getting married was something we always dreamed about but after the buzz of just getting engaged wore off wedding planning became very stressful”, they explained. “The barn we booked was absolutely beautiful and we are sad to see it go but we realised having a big wedding was not being true to ourselves. Along with all that, we were going through IVF which is a massive deal and we didn’t want either of us dealing with the stress of chair covers and if grandma will eat a meal without meat on it!”

Lo-Fi & DIY Wedding in Berlin

casual berlin park wedding (22)

Fran and Timo are from London but now live in Berlin, which is where they hosted their September wedding. The low key day had a budget of less than £6000 and they saved the most money bu avoiding anything “too weddingy”.

“We skipped having an officiant (it was Timo’s brother that shambled us through a ceremony), and we kept everything as simple and relaxed as possible”, the bride said. “The day started in a nearby park with cocktails made by Timo and one of his best men and then we stayed in the same venue until the end of the night. My hen do was at Fraülein Wild’s bakery, where we frosted our own wedding cake (it was so special for me to do it with my girlfriends!) and made about 100 mini cupcakes – rolling up the cost of the hen do with the wedding cake at the same time saved some money, and we had lots of tasters as we went!”

An Intimate London Wedding with a Pregnant Bride

Lisa Jane Photography

Originally Ashleigh and Daniel really wanted to run off to Vegas to get married, but Ashleigh being 6 months pregnant kind of scuppered those plans! They still wanted to have their wedding on their own terms though so they keep things casual and intimate. They had just 11 guests and had their reception at restaurant in London.

“We knew when we decided to get married that we didn’t want to do it conventionally”, said the bride. “We both wanted to getaway for a fun, intimate and laid-back day. Actually, we had pretty much made our minds up on travelling to Las Vegas, as we loved it when we were out there in 2011, but when we knew I would be pregnant we opted for something closer to home and London is one of our favourite cities.”

Day of the Dead Wedding in Shoreditch

Day of the Dead Wedding in Shoreditch (53)

Lindsay and Steve originally planned to elope in Las Vegas, but when the bride fell pregnant those plans had to change! “We had booked our wedding ceremony and flights to Vegas to get married in October 2014, followed by a UK Day of the Dead themed reception a week later”, Lindsay began. “A week after we did this, I found out I was pregnant! Cue cancelling of the Vegas plans and, shotgun wedding in London, and the nicknaming of bump as B.V (Baby Vegas)! We brought our plans forwards to August and, fortunately, all of our other suppliers were super accommodating and we were able to move all our UK plans forward without a hitch.”

The reception was held at Far Rockaway in Shoreditch and they were the first wedding they’ve ever held there. Judging by these awesome photos I don’t think it will be the last though! (Oh and by the way the very awesome Eclectic Wedding Extravaganza wedding show is being held there March 1st!)

“Our original Vegas wedding was to be followed by a month’s honeymoon in Mexico for the Day of the Dead festival”, the bride continued. “Sadly, this also had to be cancelled. However we continued with our Day of the Dead themed reception as a nod to our original plans.”

Unpretentious & Family-Focused DIY Wedding in Anglesey: Anna & Adam

DIY family Anglesey beach wedding - Nick Tucker - 063

I’m not gonna lie, I’ve been looking forward to featuring Anna and Adam’s wedding for a while. Anna is a wedding photographer herself, and I’m a big fan of her work, so I knew her own wedding would be something special. The wedding was 100% DIY. They picked a venue that wasn’t specifically for weddings, but meant a great deal for them. They didn’t want to spend a lot of money, so did most things as frugally as possible. Their main concern was that the day involved all the special people in their lives.

The wedding took place by the sea in Anglesey in May. “We didn’t have a wedding theme as such”, began Anna, “we just wanted it to be colourful, relaxed, fun, full of laughs, unpretentious, family-focused and very much DIY and personalised to us and the people and things we love. We wanted everyone there to feel special and comfortable and get involved as much as they wanted to. Lots of weddings focus just on the bride and groom, but to us it was also very much a day about our wonderful group of friends and family. We’re both incredibly close to them and it was really important to us to celebrate the fact that we weren’t just coming together as a couple, but also as part of a precious larger community.”
