Vegas-Inspired Wedding with Snazzy Suits, Sequins & All the Confetti!

Gemma’s ‘Suits and Sequins’ summary of her wedding to Guy is very apt, as in true Sinatra style they did things their way. Their Peckham wedding, shot by megababe Devlin Photos, was emotional and incredible from start to finish, from that sparkly green wedding dress (swoon) to the ‘Silly Old Beans’ sign they were married under, and the story behind their couples’ amazing portraits…

“There wasn’t a straight up inspiration for the wedding,” explains Gemma, who works in events as a day job. “With any event I plan I can find that really restrictive, and the beauty of a wedding is that you don’t have to have those boundaries. It can just be about you two, even if nobody else ‘gets it’. Having said that, we did ask everyone to dress in suits and sequins, and it was amazing how everyone turned up – the best dressed bunch of wonderful people.”

Speaking of sequins, Gemma looked every inch the glittery goddess in a spangly green number. “My dress was made by my bridesmaid, Nadia. I found the whole focus on what I was wearing quite overwhelming – it seemed to be everyone’s first question! Even though I left making it until a few weeks before the wedding, we had been searching for the perfect fabric for a few months. I wanted the perfect deep green so I felt like a Supreme. The dress shape was taken from a £12 New Look dress I loved the shape of on myself, which we then adapted.”

Pinwheels & Pugs: An Old-Timer Funfair Wedding

Pinwheels & Pugs An Old-Timer Funfair Wedding (20)

Sandra and Hendrik were together for 12 years before they were married. They met in August 2004 at a funfair and distinctly remember the smell of popcorn filling the air. They wanted to recreate their first meeting at their wedding, so decided it should be funfair themed. They also wanted their wedding day to be a celebration with their loved ones while listening to great music and, of course, with the smell of popcorn in the air again.

“It was a funfair wedding through and through,” explained Sandra, “We wanted to share our feelings from 2004 with everyone. The day I saw him for the first time, both of us were on the funfair in Herne which is in the Ruhr Area. Both of us were and still are children of the funfair, through and through.”

1950s Rockabilly Wedding at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum

Retro Ironbridge Gorge Museum wedding (42)

Patrick and Hazel love the 1950s and rockabilly style so they wanted to bring this into their day. When watching Grease one day, the bride also decided she needed a carousel at the wedding! Luckily they found  Blists Hill Victorian Town at the Ironbridge Gorge Museum in Shropshire which came complete with a fun fair!

“Our day was mainly about everyone having fun, so we made entertainment a priority for all ages to join in with”, began the bride. “We love our family and friends and wanted our day to be as memorable for them as it was to us. The other factor we took into account was that it had to be based on who we were. We started planning to the usual traditional path and quickly realised it was to normal to resemble our everyday life, so we scraped the planned and started from scratch.”

“We’ve always loved 1950s rockabilly style and that became our new basis for the wedding, Then one day I sat and watched Grease and did a bit of a bridezilla by demanding that I had a carousel! We started researching and found that it would be far too expensive until we found out that the museum down the road that had a Victorian fun fair with a carousel held weddings! It was perfect. Having the fair there was actually great for our guests too. We’ve been to lots of weddings and have noticed that there is always a quiet lull for the guests while the couple go to have their pictures taken. We wanted to fill the gaps by keeping the guests entertained and having the fair was perfect!”

Steampunk and Funfair Wedding

steampunk funfair wedding at a museum (46)

Jody always wanted a steampunk themed wedding, but their theme really came to life when they booked their venue. It came complete with a funfair! “When it came to planning our wedding there were very few surprises for anyone who knew us”, Jody began. “I have never been one for anything traditional and after 12 years of catering weddings James did not want anything traditional either.”

“Our starting point was to find a venue so I listed every wedding venue in Shropshire, Cheshire and North Wales and started crossing them off if they did not fit our criteria of size, budget and quirkiness. We ended up with six venues that were slightly unusual and visited them all. The last one (which was my secretly favourite) was The Ironbridge Gorge Museums. They had so many choices of areas and rooms that we could use for the ceremony and for the reception. We went for The Covered Bays for the ceremony and wedding breakfast, and Blists Hill Victorian Town for the reception. The fact the latter has a fairground sealed the deal for James!”

“For me it was a no-brainer to have a Steampunk themed wedding,” she continued. “I am a huge fan of steampunk and a complete science fiction nerd, and we both love museums, so the idea of having a steampunk themed wedding at the home of the Industrial Revolution made me just a little bit excited! We actively encouraged all our guests to dress up and extended the dress code to cover Victorian and gothic for those who weren’t comfortable with going full steampunk. We also built up a list of people and companies providing costume hire, hat making and dress making services to pass on to everyone and links to websites for inspiration.”

Pretty in Pink Funfair Wedding: Leila & Jake

MargolisWedding_JillianRosePhoto125

Leila and Jake were inspired by their mutual love of music for their wedding. That, and the groom loving the fun fair! The wedding took place in Malibu, California. “To others our wedding might have looked unique or alternative, but for us a couple it was just who we are”, began the bride. “We are both pretty heavily tattooed and pierced and we met outside one of his shows in California (he is a professional drummer).”

“Our inspiration for our wedding was the way we first met. Music wasn’t a ‘theme’ for our wedding, it’s just simply a important part of our life. We had little touches like VIP passes as escort cards and 45 records as table numbers were a way to bring our love of music into the wedding with out overwhelming it.”

“The ferris wheel and carousel were some of our favorite things”, she continued,”We had them because Jake loves rollercoasters and them parks! We also had an interfaith ceremony with a female rabbi and a tattooed Buddhist officiant!”

A Theme Park Wedding: Shirley & Elijah

Shirley & Elijah love going to theme parks and Disneyland so when it came to choosing a theme for for their wedding it was the obvious choice. “Our wedding was full of vibrant colors,” the bride wrote. “We went for the overall theme of a theme park called ‘Shirlijahland’. Every aspect of the wedding played off this. Our food was an upscale version of carnival food and our flowers were inspired by wands, pin-wheels, and lollipops. My dress and the dresses of my bridesmaids were fun and whimsical. We wanted people to be blown away and to share in a part of our quirky personalities.”

The ceremony was held in Mater Dolorosa Catholic Parish, with the reception that followed at Terra Gallery, an event space in San Francisco. The couple were able to completely decorate the venue as they liked which suited them perfectly! Origami and Chinese lanterns were hung from the ceiling, the tables all had individually styled centrepieces, and as night fell pink up-lighting was switched on to really add to the party atmosphere!
