Beth and Drew met at university where they were both in the film society club. They wanted the theme of their March wedding to reflect the way they met but not in a really obvious way. They inserted subtle film references such as the readings, their photo booth, their music choices and the table numbers. Claire and Iain were married in May at Maunsel House in Somerset. Their quirky Alice in Wonderland theme was beautifully incorporated throughout, from the stationery and paper goods to the high tea style catering and even the bride's two fabulous mini top hats! As someone who gets to see a lot of weddings on a daily basis, it takes a lot to surprise me, and even more to show me something I've never seen before. But I think I can safely say that I've never seen a plumbing themed wedding before... or a Pee Wee Herman groom for that matter! Jo and Tristen met through their love of music and so it was only right that their wedding reflected this. "We are both DJs and I run a small festival annually in an inner suburban Melbourne backyard", began the bride. "We met through our love of music and after six years together Tristen proposed to me during one of these festivals just as one of my all time favourite bands finished playing one of my favourite songs. I am always so incredibly inspired when I see weddings where the budget was small. Far from it seeming like the couple had to make compromises, the ones I get to share always seem to prove that a small budget doesn't have to mean a budget-looking wedding. In my opinion it is actually often the weddings with the smaller budgets that seem to have the most heart, the most personal details and the most inspiring ideas.Read more...

Over the past few weeks I've been interviewed by three major media outlets about the rise of low key weddings (Grazia, The Daily Mail and the BBC). A number of celebrities have recently tied the knot in uncharacteristically understated ways (Keira being the latest) which has prompted the mainstream media interest, but as any Rock n Roll bride will know this is really nothing new. Planning your wedding in your own way has been something I've championed ever since this blog began waaaay back in 2007 and I'm honoured to have featured so many beautiful, small and honest weddings over the years. The creativity of the weddings I get to feature never fails to astound me. I know I say this a lot but my readers are, without a doubt, the coolest people on the planet. Today's wedding does nothing to dissuade me from this fact. There is not one thing that I don't think is perfect about this, and weirdly, even the post-ceremony rain storm adds an extra layer of cool. There's something so incredibly romantic about eloping. Running off, declaring your undying forever love and completely forgoing tradition to do something just for the two of you. Well, as soon as I laid eyes on Sophia & James' wedding, posted in a private photographer's group that I'm a member of with the caption "I wish I shot this wedding. I think this is just so beautiful. In fact it's probably one of the most stunning weddings I've seen in a while..." I just knew I had to feature it. Lorna & Dave were married in Southend in April. Their ceremony took place at The Culture Centre, right on the pier, and their reception was at Ocean Beach, a restaurant on the beach. "The theme for our wedding was British seaside with a touch of vintage", wrote Lorna. "The beautiful blue sky and sunshine really made the day that extra bit special. It was amazing! I'm not really supposed to have favourites, but Betty might just be one of the most beautiful and radiant brides I've ever seen... I am totally smitten with her 1940s vintage lace dress (bought on eBay for £40!) and that adorable white faux flower crown and simple bouquet combo. Total perfection. I receive upwards of 50 submissions on a daily basis, and needless to say I do see a lot of very similarly styled weddings. So when a wedding like Leslie & Collin's lands in my inbox I'm over the moon, thrilled and super duper excited to feature it because it's just so different. A wacky, fun and rainbow themed wedding is always going to be a winner with me, and seeing Melanie & Michael's day, at Cocoanut Grove in Santa Cruz, was no different. I mean what's not to love?! Chelsea & Mike wanted to marry in Las Vegas but without doing the typical cheesy Vegas wedding thing. So instead of being married by Elvis, they opted for a simple ceremony (not photographed) at Little Church of the West, followed by a photo session around downtown Vegas with photographer Gaby J. There was no doubt in my mind that I had to share this wedding with you. My heart skipped a beat as I clapped eyes on the beautiful Sarah and her stunning movie starlet-esque red wedding dress from The Couture Company and I flicked through Toast of Leeds' photographs holding my breath. What an utterly beeeeeeeautiful wedding. "Our venue was Buckland Hall in the Brecon Beacons National Park, a country house in the Welsh mountains, that we could personalise and make our own for a long weekend", Sarah began. "We had free reign of the house and grounds, which we decorated with family photos and personal belongings that we've collected during our time together. Sometime late last Summer I strolled into my favourite wedding boutique to visit my friends, Laura & Emma, who own it. For their March wedding, South Africans Angelo & Candice wanted a colourful day that oozed fun...so a rainbow theme it was! "Angelo and I are generally out of the box thinkers and the 'same old same old' wedding décor was not what we wanted", began the bride. "We knew we wanted colour and fun and we went from there. There were a few elements I needed to 'sell' to my parents but they went with most of my ideas (thankfully).
