Dressing on the Side

Kat

May 31, 2010

Sometimes we all need a break from the world of wedding-madness and could do with a sit down to look at something beautiful, pretty and fun for no real reason than the fact that it's awesome. That's why I'm sharing this ridiculously cool 80's punk rock fashion editorial submitted by the super cool Galaxie Andrews. Galaxie (I can't get over how much I love her name) wanted to set up this shoot to help promote a local Arizona designer Donna from Dressing on the Side, who has an etsy store devoted to funky food-inspired tee-shirts. "We had a world-rocking team of designer, stylist, art director, models, all working together on this project making it completely awesome. donna even had a fashion designer cut up her shirts to give them a cool edge. We roamed around in our little western style old-town scottsdale, rented a horse carriage, ate ice-cream in an arcade, and played until sunset" Galaxie told me

Lucky in Love

Erik & Chelsea have a love of antique-y things: of books, of vintage treats and of the 80's! "We set out to showcase Erik's passion for cooking & Chelsea's English degree while creating a stylish, quirky- retro-y look" photographers Leslie & Ryan told me. "I must say we were also lucky enough to have full access to Renaissance Antiques, Chelsea's mother's lovely vintage shop! We found the lovely vintage hats there, the old tattered books, even Erik's ties."

Best of Blogs – Issue 9 ~ Emma Case

Kat

May 31, 2010

Anyone that's been following me in any capacity over the last 6 months will be well aware of my love and devotion to Emma Case. Not only have I featured as many of her weddings as possible (I can't get enough) but I've even been lucky enough to be photographed by her. I'd say we pretty much have communication every day (whether that be twitter, email, text or talking on the phone!) and I am honoured to call the talented and absolutely awesome lady my friend. So when it came to writing this month's 'Best of Blogs' article for uk photography magazine Photo Pro, who else was I going to choose? Enjoy...

A Sunday Kind of Love – Lisa Devlin

Kat

May 30, 2010

I wanted to start this week's post with a huge thank you to every single one of you for your kind words and comments on my 'How to...not be a blogging pushover' post. To everyone that stuck up for me and shared your love and passion for my little website - well wow, I've literally been blown away. I decided to share this story with you today because I think it can only add further proof of my love of all my sponsors, of how they make my world go round and of my genuine feelings towards them (and theirs to me it would seem!) UK photographer Lisa Devlin has been a sponsor of Rock n Roll Bride for the past few months. Not only has this got her many a Rock n Roll wedding booking, but it has provided me with more eye candy to blog than I could ask for! With Lisa's approval I wanted to share this card I received in the post this week. She also send me a little bag of treats including a Tatty Devine necklace! She knows me so well!

Soul Mates

Kat

May 29, 2010

It's such an honour that someone would send me a session to post only the day after they shot it! Photographer Ben Godkin was so convinced that Mandy & Braxton's engagement session was perfect for Rock n Roll Bride that he didn't hesitate to email me some images - even before the whole set was complete! "The couple , who are fierce backgammon players, were so fun and wanted to get some unique shots for their engagement photos! Ben wrote. "They were staying at a cozy little Bed and Breakfast called Settlers Crossing in Fredericksburg to finalize the details of their small wedding at Beckers wine vineyard in Sept. Mandy and Braxton had many tattoos but two that were particularly meaningful. They both had "Soul Mates" tattooed on both hands so when they joined hands they would always be reminded of their love. There was an abundance of farm animals on the property including horses, sheep, and donkeys, so we couldn't resist using them in the shoot. Then we headed to a local land mark called Enchanted Rock and made the 20min hike up just in time to watch the sunset, and the full moon rise... It was magical!"

Pink, Bows, Music & Radical Wedding Love

So I was going to blog this next week but I literally can't wait. I saw Annette & Brian's totally gorgeous wedding on my friend Micheal Antonia's (aka the dj extroidinate behind The Flashdance) blog and like the lightning bolt that I am (when I come across something that's as awesome as this) I was straight in there with my request to feature it. So, alongside Micheal, the photographers Our Labor of Love and Annette & Brian themselves, I am more than ecstatic to share this way-too-rad wedding with you today.

Bicycles, Sparklers & a Whole lotta Style

Carley & Graham wanted a vintage theme for their engagement session. Now I know we hear the term 'vintage' thrown all over blog-land like it's going out of fashion, but I really do love the feel to these (note: if anyone can think of another word to describe 'vintage' please let me know - I'm kinda getting sick of writing it!) But anyway, that's besides the point - Carley & Graham's session does have a beautifully authentic vintage aesthetic to it...and for that I love it! Carley put so much heart and soul into their shoot and she brought along a whole bunch of creative things to incorporate. Touches like her and Graham’s vintage-style bikes (so COOL!) and her favourite camera that she got at a second hand store for only $15! Both Carley and Graham also put alot of thought into their outfits which really added to the over all vibe of the session and made it even more perfectly...well...vintage.

Multi-Coloured Skittle-Fest

Kat

May 28, 2010

Bright colours at weddings make me smile. We actually had a black & white themed wedding ourselves, but if we were to do it again (it feels like I'm always saying this!) a multi-coloured skittle-fest might well be the way we'd do it. "Andy & Colleen met at a rock festival several years ago" photographer John told me. "For the wedding, Colleen wanted to incorporate lots of color. She didn't want to limit her options and therefore decided on a 'Skittles' theme." The couple wanted to add bright splashes of colour wherever they could and chose to have all bridesmaids wear different styles and colours of dresses. The cake may be one of my new favourites to date - have you ever seen anything so spectacularly awesome?! It was made by Icing Dreams who helped bring Colleen's design and vision to life.

Thursday Treats – 27th May 2010

Kat

May 27, 2010

So this week has been a pretty ace one. Firstly I fell in love...with the new Topshop make up range. Yes I am such a girl but the Bee's Knees nail varnish and Coral lip polish are to die for. I'm going shopping later. I might have to make a few more purchases. It's cheap, it's gorgeous and it may even be a rival for the beloved Mac...shocking! In less superficial news, on Monday I finally got to meet UK photographer Steve Gerrard who was down in London for an engagement shoot and on Tuesday I headed to The White Gallery event to meet a whole host of amazing British bridal designers and industry peeps. I can't wait to share my report with you and for you to see what I got up to! I also rekindled my love of music this week, mainly after talking about the subject with my tattoo artist (and no, I'm not sharing the results yet - it's not finished!) and with Steve, who as well as being a hugely popular wedding photographer, also does a lot of music photography. Being the Rock n Roll Bride and all, people always ask me what kind of music I'm into, and while as a teenager I was hugely into my rock/metal music, in the last few years I guess it's fallen to the wayside - what with being busy and generally not being crazy about the stuff I hear on the radio. I kind of forgot about how awesome music is! That probably sounds very weird to a lot of you huh?! Anyway, I decided to give some of my old albums and spin..and omg Deftones, Rage, Nirvana, Hole, Marylin Manson, My Ruin, System of a Down...where have you been these past few years?! I've missed you!

How to… Not become a Blogging Pushover

Kat

May 26, 2010

I have thought long and hard about actually posting this after I wrote it. It is, in all honesty, a little bit of a rant but I hope it actually might give you a greater insight into my world. As I hope most of you know, I put a lot of work into running Rock n Roll Bride. When I'm at home I'm on my computer pretty much from 10am to at least 10/11 pm working on posts, running up new ideas and keeping in touch with people. It's no longer just a hobby for me, and weird as it feels to say this, it is now my business and one I work very hard on. Anyway...

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun!

Kat

May 26, 2010

I love this shoot because not only does it look like it was a mountain of fun, but the girls that put it together are the best of friends - make it even more adorable methinks! Photographers Michelle & Hanssie had the idea for this 'retro cars and vintage dresses' shoot and enlisted the help of a bunch of their industry friends to help them. The venue, a car museum called Astor Classics Events Center, had been thinking about opening it's doors for weddings and receptions so the shoot provided the perfect opportunity for some publicity...didn't the shots turn out great? I know I'd love to get married there - what a load of awesome locations for photo ops!

Rustic Retro with a Diy Charm

Kat

May 25, 2010

Fanni & Ben got married in April at Cripps Barn in Gloucestershire. Bored by the usual wedding stuff they found in magazines and at wedding shows, the pair turned to the internet for inspiration and luckily for them stumbled upon not only Rock n Roll Bride but a plethora of amazing ideas via some awesome American wedding blogs. "Back at the drawing board, I found myself scanning an array of American wedding blogs. All of which featured jaw-droppingly gorgeous weddings that looked amazing but had little or no information about weddings in the UK, and then I stumbled across your site!" Fanni told me "From that day on, Rock n Roll Bride truly was a breath of fresh air for me from everything else I had seen out there previously. Your site was reassuring that we didn't have to be confined to the norm or do things a certain way because it was tradition. Our wedding was our day, our way. We wanted our guests to have the best time and not be left thinking that they were just at....'another textbook wedding.' So, with much planning and evenings spent beavering away we managed to pull it all together."

When this Baby Hits 88 mph…

Kat

Marty McFly: Wait a minute, Doc. Ah... Are you telling me that you built a time machine... out of a DeLorean? Dr. Emmett Brown: The way I see it, if you're gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style? Back to the Future is my favourite movie. Like ever...I am also quite partial to the sequels and am still convinced that in 5 years time we will all have hover boards. I even have a die-cast Delorean on my windowsill that Gareth got me one Christmas...yes I am that much of a geek. So when I saw this engagement shoot starring my ultimate dream car (shh don't tell the Honda outside) well there was no way I wasn't going to feature it! "I was shooting this couple at an airport with their plane and some dude came out of the hangar and said that we should use his Delorean" photographer Carl told me. "I was like, YES AND YES! It was epic!"

Rock n Roll News – My Crazy Life

Kat

May 24, 2010

First off, I want to say a huge thank you to everyone for your support over the last year or so. I know I say it all the time, but I truly am in awe at every single on of you that visits my site, comments, sends me emails of love, send me submissions, sponsors me and generally allows me to live my dream! Because of every single one of you I've been able to go part time at my day job and spend 5 days a week doing what I love. It's amazing and it's all because of you guys. After the initial over-excitement of becoming a full time blogger, I got-to-thinking; hell, what am I going to do next?! How can I make Rock n Roll Bride even better with all this extra time? Well, as with most things in this career of mine, it's all just kind of falling into place. From the very beginning the blog has been very organic and real, and has grown slowly. I hope, in a genuine way. I never started my website to make money and in all honestly, becoming rich is not how I measure my success. As long as I can pay my bills and feed my kittens I'm happy. I didn't start the blog to be the biggest or most popular and I won't be turning Rock n Roll Bride into a money making empire now this is my main income so I hope you'll be pleased to hear! I measure my success on you guys. How many people read what I write and comment on the photographs I post and how and if I make you happy. It sounds soppy and idealistic but seriously, that it. That's me.

A Sunday Kind of Love – My Husband

Because without him I am nothing. becauseI love him more than life itself. Because he cheers me when I am blue and helps me out when I need it. Because he is a man with feelings. Because he love pussy cats just as much as me. Because he is an uber geek. Because he helps out behind the scenes of Rock n Roll Bride for no other reason than that he loves me and is proud of me. Because he is my best friend and I need him to live. Because I don't always show my appreciation and he always forgives me.

Julia & Yuriy’s Rockstar Engagement Session

Kat

May 21, 2010

There are certain photographers that I equate to rock star status and Sean Flanigan is definately one of these. So you can imagine my excitement when he sent me Julia & Yuriy's recent engagement sesh for a potential feature. Would I like to blog them? Hell to the yes I would! Not only are this couple hella gorgeous but the simplicity of these images (no props, rad vintage car) makes Sean's amazing technically ability stand out even more and creates an utterly endearing and well, even more awesome set of images. I approve!

A Pop of Colour

II love Jeff & Manya's wedding for so many reasons. The first has got to be Manya's gorgeous 'McKenzie' Modern Trousseau dress complete with swarovski crystal belt, Betsey Johnson shoes and hair piece by Lani Fisher (who works with Jill of Darling Bride who did her hair) and the second is those gorgeous flowers by Jen K Floral Designs. Seriously, aren't those yellows just amaaazing. The wedding overall had a yellow and blue theme - and it really works! The colours of the bridesmaids dresses looks awesome next to the uber 'pop' of the citrus blooms...and don't even get my started on Manya's fuchsia pink lipstick. Epic!
