Colourful, Care Free San Francisco Un-Wedding Inspired by Burning Man

Amy and Josh skipped the formal wedding part for their June celebration, and just hosted one great big party! “We were engaged at Burning Man and have had some of our best memories there,” explained the bride, “we wanted the wedding to be representative of this. We wanted the whole vibe to be care-free, whimsical and colourful. We love bold, crazy patterns so that was the only décor consideration – the brighter the better!”

With a $42,000 to play with, they had budget to throw one hell of a party. Hosted at Venue 550 in San Francisco with planning by Two Perfect Events, they put together a lot of décor on their own, and had their planner oversee everything on the day so they were free to party! They filled the space with rented neon signs from Flashing Blinky Lights and balloons. Instead of a stuffy formal meal, they hired food trucks for their guests. Entertainment was provided in the form of karaoke, and the perfect addition to any good party? An open bar, of course!

A Burning Man Ceremony & Melbourne Reception with a Light Up Wedding Dress!

GASP! Kelsie and Andy’s wedding is about to knock your socks off because Keisie got hitched in a LIGHT UP DRESS, Andy looked just as swag in his iridescent sequin tuxedo and they had photos atop a giant unicorn sculpture at Burning Man. I meaaaaaan, this is pretty much what all Rock n Roll Bride wedding dreams are made of!

Their Burning Man ceremony took place in August and their reception back home was in November. They were legally married on ‘Tutu Tuesday’ at Burning Man by the host of their theme camp (Barbie Death Camp) ‘Doc Pyro’, who is ordained. He stood inside life-sized Barbie box to marry them.

“We were already planning on going to Burning Man when Andy proposed”, Kelsie began. “I had the idea to get married there when I was listening to a Burning Man set by one of my favourite electronic producers, Monolink. Why not combine our absolute happiest place in the world with the happiest day of our lives? I never wanted to have a traditional wedding with a large bill. I couldn’t understand why you’d not spend the money travelling the world and get married in a place where there is an almost infinite amount of beauty, art, music and community instead? I used Rock n Roll Bride for a lot of inspiration as well as Instagram and Pinterest for outfit ideas.”

Intergalactic Gods & Goddesses Themed Burning Man Wedding

WOW. OK prepare yourself, because this is a wedding you are going to pay attention for. Burners Yoshi and Gilles chose their favourite place in the world to say their vows – Burning Man! In total they spent just $2000 on the day (not including their tickets because they knew they’d already be going). Apart from their outfits (which the bride made) their photographer, some champers and a homemade cake, they really didn’t bother with anything else!

Their friend, Xuan-Ann, got registered as an officiant in the state of Nevada so she could marry them. “Getting married at Burning Man was definitely out of the ordinary”, Yoshi began. “Unlike most brides, I didn’t plan much except our wedding outfits, the gifts, the date and the ceremony location. I left everything else up to synchronicity. Everything ended up coming together magically, thanks to the help of our friends who wanted to make our special day as stress-free as possible. One of the principles of Burning Man is gifting so instead of receiving wedding presents, we offered gifts to our guests. Our friends were given symbols of our love: custom face chains with our initials designed by our friend Ipek Design, and paper fans that featured one of Gilles’ Burning Man photos with our motto ‘Make Your Life An Art Piece.”

Burning Man Inspired Wedding in Thailand

As motorcycle-loving visual artists living in Laguna Beach, Dana and Michael didn’t want anything traditional for their December wedding. Inspired by Burning Man, they decided to fly to Thailand to have the non-traditional wedding of their dreams – complete with the bridal party in paper elephant heads!

“We wanted to take the opportunity to invite all our loved ones across the world to Koh Samui, Thailand”, Dana explained, “bringing them outside of their comfort zone in hopes of inspiring them, in much the same way that Burning Man inspires us each year. We incorporated details from our story together. Our wild three-day festival of events included ice-breakers across aquamarine waters, an all-white party with an elephant entrance, and the wedding where we asked all our loved ones to be our flowers (dress in floral pattern rather than making more trash) and participate in a Burning Man ritual to help us burn away the fears and hardships of the past, celebrate the now, and walk into the future together.”

“The whole thing was pulled together in just a few days before the ceremony so it was very low key and we just used what we had”, began Kirsty. “Nothing, apart from what we wore, was planned in advance. The idea to use the bikes to crate an aisle happened when we all arrived at the Grove.”

Disco Jelly Car Wedding at Burning Man

Disco Jelly Car Wedding at Burning Man (30)

Bunny and Sarah were married at Burning Man Festival. Their theme was based on their Disco Jelly Art Car that they made for their camp. “Getting married at Burning Man was very unusual!” said Bunny. “The environment and elements, such as heat, wind and dust (sometimes all at the same time!), made the wedding very different and challenging. During the ceremony a dust storm came, but we didn’t thinking about pausing for a second. It made our moments very raw and unforgettable.”

The couple were married in front of a giant spinning heart, “For our ceremony location we chose an art piece in the shape of a spinning heart made by Eric Zann” explained Sarah. “The ceremony itself was very relaxed and our friends made it even better than we ever imagined. One of our friends was our officiant, another friend played the guitar, and another one recited his speech in German, even though no one understood German!”
