Business Bites: Do You Take a Break Over the Holidays?

It’s that time of year where we all start wishing the time away and eagerly awaiting that glorious week between Christmas and New Year where we can all have a proper week off. Unless you work for yourself that is.

However long I’ve been blogging I always agonise over whether I should join the rest of humanity and step away from work completely, or if I should keep up my regular posting schedule. On the one hand it’s nice to lay down, watch crap tv and have nothing to do apart from pour another sherry. But on the flip side, if most of the western world are off work, the likelihood is that they’ll also be spending a lot of time online. After all there’s only so much family time you can take. Plus, Christmas is a time rife with proposals, surely wedding professionals in particular should be putting their very best content online during this time to capture the attention of the newly betrothed.

So tell me, are you planning to unplug over the holiday season or will you be keeping up to date as normal?

But before then, let’s all enjoy this week’s business links:

Who is your ideal customer?

“If your customer doesn’t have the problem you’re solving, then he probably arrived there by mistake and will soon leave. Or possibly you’re not being very clear on the problem you’re solving and you and your customer have a different idea of what it is. In any case, solving a pressing problem your customer has is a requirement at the start for your product.”

How to dominate at blogging (this had me howling with laughter)

  1. I set up my posts in advance and take time off. I love doing that and coming back truly fresh in the new year! That one week does wonders for my creative flow. Cheers!

  2. For the first time ever, I’ll be at work over the Christmas holidays, so I might as well keep blogging as usual!

  3. We are away for christmas, 6 weeks in Australia and Vietnam – so Im spending a LOT of time writing enough blog posts to cover the time we are away. Ill be checking emails and do as little work as I can get away with but at least the website will be kept up to date!

For the first time since I set up the business I’m giving myself a proper holiday over Christmas .. I’m sick of watching my lovely other half have 2 solid weeks off over Christmas essentially without me. So this year I planned in a 2 week holiday in advance, won’t be taking any last minute bookings because I can’t possibly turn them down and will also be taking a blogging holiday by scheduling in lots of content whilst I’m away and plenty of tweets etc to go with it. Hopefully for once I’ll be able to relax! 🙂

  5. Will take a couple of days but in the down time I have in my regular diary will be doing a bit of catchup studies. In addition I will be blogging a bit more. So in some ways a bit of both but at Christmas my son & husband are my all 🙂

  6. As it’s turned out, I don’t have any Christmas or New Year weddings booked in this year (unlike the last couple of years) so I will definitely be taking Christmas week off! Normally January goes nuts with client enquiries – I think people suddenly realised that argh, they’re getting married THIS YEAR and need to get their photographer sorted – so it’s a good time to recharge as I know I’ll be busy in January.

I’ve already started the burn-down to the festive period in terms of planning what needs to be done before then and setting myself a schedule so I know I won’t be manically trying to finish off things on Christmas Eve… well, everyone can dream, can’t they?!
