Megan & Kevin’s Budget Conscious, Family Friendly, DIY Heavy Day

You might remember Megan from her Historic Firehouse Bridals that I featured a few weeks ago. I loved them so when her photographer Erica of Turner Creative Photography sent me the photographs of her and Kevin’s wedding, I couldn’t wait to share them on these pages. Even more so in fact when I found out their day was an all-out budget diy fest – one of my favourite types of weddings! I also knew that Megan hadn’t worn her actual wedding dress for her bridal shoot so I couldn’t wait to see what she’s chosen too.

The wedding took place at Highway Gardens at the Missouri State Fairgrounds and the Missouri Electric Co-op Building. Megan looks stunning in her Alfred Angelo(Sapphire collection style 805) which was their only big splurge. Everything else was a diy family effort.

A family friend made the cake and her aunt did all the flowers. The cake was actually quite ingenious as they used styrofoam for all the layers except the top layer which was actual cake. They didn’t need that much cake as their wedding was quite a small affair but the styrofoam layers (covered in icing) were used to add height and drama. Great idea!

The catering was also all done by family members and the bride and groom made over 400 cookies in hand-decorated bags for favours. A few other fabulous details included the ‘friend board’ – a collage of photographs of all the couple’s best friends. “We made a photo collage of all of our friends, because we were tired of how much of everything was focused on us. We figured people would be excited to see photos of themselves instead of us” they explained. The orders of service (also diy of course) were made into fans as the considerate couple knew it would be really hot at their outdoor ceremony.

A Las Vegas Zombie Party!

I’d love to go to a wedding like Patrick & Carla’s – a small, personal and seriously fun wedding in Las Vegas. They basically had a really fun holiday with all their best friends and got married at the same time! Carla told me all about their wedding story and I can’t wait to share it all with you. Methinks you will likey…

“We decided to go to Las Vegas for several reasons. (We are a Denver, CO area couple.)  When we first started planning our shindig it was going to be a small affair, about 30 people or so.  But even an event that small seems to be a lot of work, and take a lot of cash.  We found ourselves talking about the wedding and always saying, “Everyone will love that.” or “what do you think people will think?”  And we discovered that we were starting to plan our wedding for everyone else.  So we decided to rethink our wedding and make it completely and totally us and all about us. One problem we had was money. Neither of us makes a ton of it, so we had to think what we can do to have fun, that won’t cost a fortune and still have a honeymoon.  Patrick came up with Vegas.  We decided to cut the guest list way down too.  Patrick’s father is elderly, and wouldn’t be able to make the trip, so to be fair I talked to my parents and asked if they minded not going.  They actually didn’t freak out.”

Minimal Modern with Vintage Touches

I really love featuring weddings that I feel like I was in anyway a little part of shaping. Not only did the bride Carolynne read Rock n Roll Bride throughout her planning (yey!) but she even won one of my contests for a cute Lissita Treasure Ring by TokyoMade which she gave to her Maid of Honour to wear on the day!

This fabulous diy wedding was held at Prairie Production in downtown Chicago. Carolynne looks fabulous in her $75 dress which she found on Ebay (wow!) and her Joan & David shoes. She teamed these with a hat/veil combo which she found by Cyndef Designs on Etsy and vintage gloves and jewellery. Her groom, Andy looked pretty damn dapper in his Michael Kors suit too!

“We wanted to have a chic, urban wedding that we would want to go to if we were the guests” the bride explained.  “Since I had only been to one other wedding in my life before this, I had little to go on, but as long as it had awesome music & food, and no boring speeches or dumb traditions (like throwing a garter) then really anything was possible!” The couple really wanted to have a mix of modern and vintage styling and found the minimal loft space of Prairie Production to be perfect for this. They were able to add classy touches with the simple flower designs and vintage touches with their outfits and that cool car!

“You and Me are Awesome” – A Kick Ass Independent Elopement

I loved Matt & Brandy as soon as I read their email to me last week. “We are f***ing rock n’ roll because we had the balls to call off a wedding.
We originally got engaged in April 2009 and shortly thereafter set the date for April 2010. We wanted a simple affair which of course spiraled out of control. It became about every one else. We lost sight of what the day meant to us as a couple. The guest list kept getting longer…which meant more money…and more problems. In November it hit us…wtf are we doing????
We ended up calling off the wedding…and calling off our engagement. We became a bit disenchanted by the whole wedding planning and wondered if it was something we ever wanted to do. We absolutely became victims of the wedding stress monster. We never thought it would happen to us!”

See? love them?! Lucky for them (and us!) they did decide to continue down the wedding path, but only if they could do it their way! “Months passed and we still loved one another. We still planned on spending the rest of our lives together so what now?” they continued. “We couldn’t imagine planning another wedding. Ugh. Well…Matt ended up winning free tickets to anywhere within the continental U.S. that had to be used before May 31st 2010. We decided on San Francisco and then we decided…hey…lets elope while we’re there!”

Purple, Green & Everything in Between – Stunning Australian Wedding

OK so this was the Australian wedding that I’d planned on posting yesterday but me being a bit pink (as apposed to blonde) I forgot about the crazy time difference between here and Oz so when I was emailing the photographers to get the info I needed, unsurprisingly they weren’t replying because it was like 3 in the morning or something. Aaaanyway it matters not because NOW my babies I am able to share this fan-bloody-tastic wedding with you…and I’m so pumped to hear what you think. I literally wet myself with excitement when I saw Madeline’s purple and green dress!

Madeline & Nic decided very early on that they didn’t want a traditional wedding – the bride’s two sisters had both done the white wedding thing and although their days were beautiful and perfect for them, it wasn’t quite right for this couple. “We are non-traditionalists (hence no white/ no flowers/ no favours/ no wedding cake/ no sit-down dinner) and we wanted a wedding that reflected our personalities and relationship. Bit crazy, lots of fun, different and unique” the pair told me.

Retro Movie Themed Kansas City Wedding

You’re going to love Erica & Ryan’s homespun, diy wedding…and you’re certainly going to love their story. I was over the moon to receive these gorgeous images from photographer Katie and even more chuffed when Erica got in touch with all the juicy details.

“Ryan and I originally thought we would just have a courthouse wedding, and then have a big party. Of course, our parents were not so thrilled with the idea. We also did not want anyone else planning or making decisions for OUR wedding/party, because we did not want it to be the same old wedding and the same old reception that we’ve all attended twenty times before. Nothing against traditional weddings, we’re just not traditional.  We also were looking to keep it cheap simply because we think it’s silly to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a few hours. All we really needed was the two of us looking snazzy and an amazing photographer.”

They chose the Scout Statue, Kansas City, MO for their ceremony as the couple drove past it every day and felt it was perfect for them. For their reception Screenland Crossroads, Kansas City, MO provided the perfect mix they were looking for – reasonably priced and unique. “We had seen a couple movies at the theatre and instantly fell in love with the place- who wouldn’t love fully reclining leather movie theatre seats?  It also went along with our Kansas City theme, as it is part of a small local chain of theatres. We met with the event coordinator, Bryan Williams, and he was more than willing to help us achieve anything we wanted to with our party. We loved all the vintage movie posters that cover the walls, and the leopard print carpet. Added bonus: cheap drinks since we planned on having a cash bar” Erica told me.

The couple added fantstic personal touches to make their wedding truely their own, everything from having Oklahoma Joe’s BBQ provide the food (one of their favourite restaurants) and to choosing doughnut from Lamar’s Donuts instead of an expensive traditional cake.

Erica’s dress was also a perfect reflection of her. “First of all, green has been both Ryan’s and my favorite color since as far back as I can remember” she began. “Secondly, I’m not particularly a fan of wearing white- I’m too pale. And I’m definitely not a fan of the oh-so-popular strapless wedding dress. There is a very small percent of brides who can actually pull that off.  So I wanted something different, something classy, something fun – something me. I looked at a lot of dresses online and found two dresses I liked the top of one, the bottom of the other. So I sent them to my fashion and design genius friend Natalie Julich, told her what I wanted and that I wanted it green. She photoshopped the two together, made it green, and put my face on it and voila the idea was born. I knew Ryan’s mom had made a wedding dress before, so when Ryan and I told our parents that we were engaged, I asked her if she would make it. She gladly accepted. Through trial and error, she made the dress just right- green and fluffy! Not to mention gorgeous!”
