You Will Be Judged (Or You Will Be Ignored)

Seth Godin once said “You will be judged (or you will be ignored). Those are pretty much the only two choices.” What he’s saying is that you’ll either be judged for being different, new, or wrong… or you’ll be ignored for being the same, boring, or uninspiring. Your choice.

Sure, not everyone will ‘get you’ if you take a different route. They might not want to follow you online or go on to book your services. But your journey is not for them. Being the same as everyone else is boring. Being the same as everyone else means you’ll blend into the masses.

Remember, this is your chance and your life. Take control of it. Do things to make yourself happy. Ignore those naysayers and traditionalists. You, and only you, have the ability to drive your business, your career and your life, in the right direction for you. The buck completely stops with whatever you decide is the right path.

It’s easy for someone else to tell you you’re doing something badly. They have no further responsibility over your career other than sharing their unwanted opinions. If I’ve learnt one thing since starting this blog, it’s that not everyone’s ideas are worthy of acknowledgement.

Would you rather be judged for standing out, or ignored for blending in?

  1. It’s all about being true to yourself. If you’re a ‘blender-inner’ and happiest being so, then don’t let anyone make you be something you’re not.

But, I think that we all have our individuality, some more in your face than not, and by being true to yourself, in business, in your personal life, this will come to the fore.

I think the important thing is – don’t be a sheep.

  2. This couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.
I am getting ready to launch my company, and i’ve put my soul into it, and its different.

A few people have said ‘shouldn’t you stick something traditional in there to play safe’ and i’ve said no, and this just reaffirms that to stand out I totally need to be confidently different 😀

    Thanks Kat! Awesome as always!

  3. I have finally realized this exact thing……so why not just be true to yourself! I recently “came out” as a medium and was expecting a ton of judging….but I was surprised by the support I received. Another thing I have learned… an authentic life and the universe with keep on surprising you 🙂

  4. Thank you so much for this. I was needing some positivity right now and I got it- I am starting to live by doing things that make me happy.

Thank you so much for this Kat! When I discuss my new fledgling business ideas I get plenty of blank stares. I have to remind myself that the “traditional thinkers” are not my target market and that I am indeed doing something right by not appealing to the people that I dont love to work with. What a great reminder to stay true to who you really are. Thank you!!

  6. I love it when people say ‘You’re not like other people’ – best compliment ever! Totally with you Kat, be who you want to be, not who others think you should be. Great post.

  7. Love this! Definitely targetting a more unique audience with my business and that’s just the way I like it! I might not be getting as many clients (yet) as I would have if I’d have stuck with a more traditional style but I have no regrets!
