How to…Style a Pin Up/Punk/Goth Wedding

Photography Credit: Ming Xi by Zach Gold for Style SCMP via Fashion Gone Rouge

Hello there beautiful lady!

I’m very excited and feel very honored just writing you! I want you to know that I think you are amazingly awesome. I do however have a wee bit of a question for ya.

My love and I just got engaged and we are having out wedding in just six months. I’m struggling to find which direction to go! He is very punk rock ( and Irish) I on the other hand am diverse…I’m goth/40s pin up/ punk. At least that’s what he says. I’m not really defined. I like a little bit of everything all rolled into one. None really go together other than certain elements but it works for me and for him! We are wanting to incorporate all of us a whole. I’m just not sure what to do!! It is very overwhelming and I want our day to be represent who we are together and be just as perfect as we are. Please please please HELP us! I’m in some serial need of it.

Thanks soooo very much!!!
Scotty and Kourtnie <3

I received this email from Kourtnie a few weeks ago, and after mulling it over for a while I decided that an inspiration/mood board was the way to go in helping her define her wedding theme. I wanted to show that even though Kourtnie’s ideas sounded a bit loose to he, it really does all tie together brilliantly!

I decided to ask Michelle of Pocketful of Dreams if she’d help me out too as she is brilliant at creating these awesome mood boards! Scotty and Kourtnie I hope this helps (and if pink isn’t your thing then simply switch the colours to the one you love the most!)

♥  ♥  ♥

When I first received Kat’s brief from a Rock n Roll Bride reader wanting direction for a punk – goth – pin-up wedding style I was so excited.  I have never tackled anything like it before so it is a challenge for me but one I couldn’t wait to begin.

Once I began looking around for ideas I could really understand why Kat’s reader was feeling overwhelmed and struggling to decide which way to go – these styles are so different and very defined in their own unique ways. But there is no reason why she should have to choose just one, as elements from all of them can be incorporated into her wedding day. After all the Rock n Roll Bride philosophy is all about individuality and embracing quirkiness, so for this task I wanted to pull elements from punk, goth and pin-up culture and combine them all together in a way that works in harmony.

To do this I chose a bright and bold colour palette of gothic black, punky silver, and then brighter colours synonymous with the pin-up style – raspberry red and hot pink. Within this palette I added specific elements to represent each style of punk, goth and pin-up that would co-ordinate the overall look.

♥ Work that retro pin-up vibe by serving retro sweets in a classic sweet bar. This would look fab if the sweets were in co-ordinating colours, think gumballs, cherry lips and liquorice sticks. Serve alongside classic soda bottles with stripy pink or grey straws.  (1) Retro Sweets by Featherlove Photography via Ruffled Blog

♥ Ask your florist for a spikey handtied bouquet of retro flowers in your chosen colours and mix in with black or silver berries and thistles and maybe even add in a few studs or large safety pins to keep the punky vibe.  (2) Retro Flowers by Featherlove Photography via Ruffled Blog

I spend a lot of time online (like seriously hours a day) and so of course I come across many a fabulous wedding and non-wedding thing that I don’t want to dedicate a full spot to. So, inspired by one of my favourite bloggers, I have decided on a new little feature. Every Thursday I will introduce you to a few extra treats out there on the world wide web. I hope you enjoy it. Let’s begin…

♥  Problogger spoke about a topic very dear to my heart – the importance of outbound links when blogging.
♥  The Unbride, Justine Ungaro, has relaunched her fabulous blog. It’s had a makeover and is more awesome than ever. Plus to celebrate she is running a veil giveaway from Castle Bride Couture.
Vivienne Westwood has released some brand new colours of the super popular Lady Dragon shoe. I need those red/fuchsia ones in my life asap!
♥  The delightfully dark La Carmina gave us a sneak peak of her newest book – Cute Yummy Time. I can not wait to get my hands on it!
♥ This is kind of last week’s news – but as this is a new feature and I had to squeeze it in. My friend Marina and her band Miss Fitz got through to bootcamp on the X-Factor. Check them out. I’m biased yes but they totally rock!
Design*Sponge posted some super gorgeous downloadable wallpapers on their site. I am currently rocking the  Deanne Cheuk (Light) design.
I Love Lolliblog posted a candy, tully, frothy, gorgeous inspiration board – It’s My Party.
♥ And these lovely people gave Rock n Roll Bride a shout out this week…

I have loved hanging out with Emily of Peach & Pearl this week..a huge thank you for all her hard work putting together some fantastico inspiration boards just for us. I hope you have all loved them too!
So for the last time (this week) over to Emily…

For my last board, I imagined an intimate, sit-down dinner with your closest family and friends that could be held just as easily in a loved one’s backyard or the patio of your favourite restaurant.  While not as rock and roll as some celebrations I could have put together, I think this board really reflects what I feel is the heart of Rock ‘n Roll Bride – not bowing to wedding convention, but truly having the wedding that best reflects you as a pair and your relationship.  Keep things simple and handmade with potted herb favours, a hosta and lady slipper bouquet, breadstick and olive oil centrepieces, pigs in a blanket at the cocktail hour, and a short, sassy dress for the bride.

Thank you again, so much, for having me this week, and to Kat for inviting me on to her lovely blog!  If you’d like to see more boards and other style + design + wedding musings, I’m over at Peach & Pearl.  I also design custom inspiration boards through my Etsy shop, and would be delighted to work with you to put one together.  If you’re interested, you can see the details here and purchase here.

I am super excited today as not only have I got a plethora of amazing stuff to share with you in the next few days but myself and David have decided the winners of the free wedding photography contest! I will be announcing the winners on here as soon as I have told them!

I really loved featuring Emily’s first inspiration board on Monday and it seemed you guys did too..so hold on to your hats, here comes round two..

Hello again!  Today’s board was inspired by the tattooed bride in the top left corner – I love the juxtaposition between her tattoo and her pearls, and tried to strike the same balance in my board.  This wedding is elegant and restrained, vintage and at the same time sort of modern, I think.  Try a fabulously feathered headband for the bride, a dark suit and skinny tie for the groom, unexpectedly mod calligraphy on envelopes, and spiky echinacea in square mirrored boxes as centerpieces.  A classic car borrowed from a friend or auto club is a stylish – and inexpensive! – getaway.

I’ve got one more mini post for you before I sign off for the evening.  After perusing all your survey responses, I’ve discovered that the second most popular response to the question ‘what would you like to see more of on RnR Bride?’ was ‘Inspiration Boards’ (after ‘Real Weddings’ I’m glad to see I’m doing something right!)

Now..I’m no inspiration board expert (yet!) and I’m sure we all know that Kathryn over at Snippet & Ink is the actual queen of all things inspiration board, so for now I’m going to hand over to her with a couple of my favouritest of her amazing boards

However from now on, I want to hear from you.  Send me your inspiration boards, whether they’re for your own weddings or just for fun, and I’ll post the best ones right here…I may even give a prize if I get a lot of entries..but I haven’t thought of what that could be yet, leave that one with me!
