Pastel Goth Unicorn Wedding for $1500!

I was trying to figure out how to best start 2018 with a BANG, wondering what would be the perfect post that would start as we mean to go on for the year ahead… And then I laid eyes on Suzi and Ivan’s fantasy, fairytale and UNICORN THEMED WEDDING and the decision was basically made for me. This has to be one of the coolest weddings I’ve seen in a long time! They got tattoos, the bride wore a floral purple dress and they even a real life unicorn for goodness sake. Oh and very the best part? The whole wedding only cost $1500 (AUD). Truly incredible.

They were married in Glen Innes, New South Wales in August. They met when the bride moved to the area. “I had moved to Glen Innes from the city and was hating country life”, she explained. “I figured since I don’t like cowboys, I’d never find someone in this tiny town. After a year living here, I was asked by the elders to be the new church door greeter since I ‘look cool’. So that first Sunday night I was merrily shaking hands and welcoming people to the service when I spotted a golden Adonis across the car park heading my way! I mumbled a hello through my drool and then turned to who was next to me and said ‘Dibbs! That one’s mine!’ Six months later he finally came around and decided to ask me out haha!”

Medieval & Metal Fairytale Wedding

Kellie and Andy met at a metal gig and both love the aesthetic of all things medieval. Needless to say, when it came to planning their February wedding, the theme was easy!

“Our inspiration was King Arthur, medieval, alchemy/ magic, wizards, princes and princesses”, said Kellie. “Andy is also a big craft beer guy, so when he decided he wanted his favourite beer at the wedding, we crafted an elaborate plan to get enough bottles. His favourite beer is Parabola from Firestone Walker and it is only released once a year and there is usually a limit of buying one or two bottles at a time… So we rounded up a bunch of friends and road-tripped to the brewery so we could buy as many as we could on top of buying bottles when we or friends found them in local stores!”

Instead of a traditional dress, the bride wore a sheer cloak in place of a veil with a medieval inspired dress made by Firefly Path. “I think my favourite part of the wedding was just being dressed up with my favourite people having a party in a ‘castle’,” she explained. “The whole immersive feel of everything really transported me into my fantasies and it truly felt as amazing as a dream. The thing that we spent the biggest lump sum on was definitely my dress and cloak veil. I got them completely custom designed and made and I think it was the best thing that I could have done. Firefly Path was absolutely amazing and their work is impeccable. They fleshed out my vision and brought it to life!”

When you look at weddings day in, day out like I do, it can be all too easy to get a bit blinded by it all… But then a wedding like this one comes along, smacks you right in the middle of your forehead and forces you to pay attention! The wedding took place at Sacred Mountain Ranch in Julian, California. “Our wedding theme was an ‘Autumn Fantasy Woodland Wedding'”,  began Mckenzie. “Think Lord of The Rings, fairies, satyrs. It was also LARP (Live Action Role Playing) inspired. We actually had a sword duel during the reception dinner.”

Dark Fairytale Wedding

Lina and Karl’s Swedish wedding was inspired by Grimm’s fairytales and the darker side of fantasy.

“We chose to call our wedding theme ‘dark fairytales’, alluding to the real endings of the Grimm fairytales and the writings of H.C. Andersen”, said the bride. “It also came from the love of fantasy and dressing up. We are the couple that wear elf ears and robes when The Hobbit opens in the cinema so we couldn’t have a ‘normal’ wedding! Visually, A Midsummer Nights Dream was a strong influence, but there were also nods to Tolkien, Norse and Greek mythology, Game of Thrones and many of our hobbies.”

The bride had her dress made by The Couture Company in the UK and the groom rocked a morning suit owned by his grandfather! “My dress was magical and working with Jo at The Couture Company was a joy from start to finish. My shoes came from Amazon and I decorated them myself. I also customised Karl’s suit a bit with feathers and some homemade little insects to match my dress. I made his antlers too, in black and gold. The influences for both of our outfits came from Titania and Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Once Upon a Dream: Bohemian Woodland Fairytale Wedding

Once Upon a Dream Bohemian Woodland Fairytale Wedding (37)

Vita and Michailas described their wedding theme as ‘a violet haze, bohemian, woodland fairytale’. They wanted their wedding to be very intimate and small, but magical. They focused on having lots of colours and flowers with a bit of glitz and copper details. Overall they wanted their wedding to be inspired by themselves and things they both love.

The couple’s favourite part of the day was their ceremony. “It was truly magical,” said Vita, “I think our wedding ceremony was the most emotional moment of my entire life! I don’t think there was ever a time when I felt so many emotions at once. It was wonderful, overwhelming and simply amazing. We had great musicians playing the music in the middle of the woods, I walked down the aisle to Once Upon a Dream from the Sleeping Beauty and it truly felt like a woodland fairy tale. The smell of the rose petal confetti was magical, my grandma had picked it herself from wild roses, and it felt magical to be showered in it!”

Fantasy Literature Inspired Fairytale Wedding

Inspired by their favourite fantasy novels, Sarah and Adrian had a wedding that featured influences from books such as Lord of the Rings, Narnia, Labyrinth and Game of Thrones.

“We first started describing our vision as ‘fairytale’ until we realised the wedding industry had a very different interpretation of the word than we did!”, the bride began. “I would describe it as ‘actual fairytale’, enchanted forest or fantasy literature inspired. It was Harry Potter, Labyrinth and Star Wars with a little The Last Unicorn, Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones thrown in!! We are both long term LARPers and share PC gaming as a hobby, so we picked out things we like and mashed them into an eclectic theme. Adrian also carried a replica of Lucius Malfoy’s Cane (complete with hidden wand) as part of his wedding outfit… We definitely went for the ‘more is more’ approach!”

The February wedding was held at Glazebrook House Hotel in Devon. “We were married on the landing of the staircase. I was very fortunate to have the support and huge help of my Mum and sister who run the wedding decor company, Flourish. They decked the staircase in lanterns, foliage and flowers, so it looked like something out of an enchanted castle! Our registrar was really helpful in working out where we would stand and had the idea of having the bridesmaids sat on the bottom stairs which looked lovely!”
