Sarah Sloboda *is* Rock n Roll!

April 20, 2009

Sarah Sloboda is a fabulously ‘rock n roll style’ photographer from NYC who I have had the pleasure of featuring before. So when she send me this newest wedding of hers I quite frankly jumped at the chance of getting them up here.  Again with the sweet, simple and perfectly personal weddings!

There’s so much I love about teaching The Blogcademy; meeting so many inspiring babes, travelling the world, talking about my favourite subject and getting paid for it… it’s a pretty sweet gig.

Now something you may or may not know about me is that I am frightfully organised – when it comes to my work at least! Gala and Shauna actually nicknamed me “The Secretary” because I’m the one who does all the email, speadsheets and admin for the business. I also organise all the photographers, venues and sponsors. It might sound like a sucky job but that’s seriously my idea of a good time!

Eloping in New York

January 15, 2010

Tanya & Spike went over to New York from Sydney, Australia to elope in style! I love their simple wedding and killer attitude (not to mention that orange dress!) Photographer Sarah was privileged to be the only witness at the ceremony and then to follow the pair around the city to document their first hours as a married couple.

As you may have noticed I’ve tweeked the layout of the posts slightly this week. Now, you’ll just get one preview image for each article and if you want to see the rest you just need to click ‘read the the rest of this entry’. The idea behind it is to not only make the front page look a lot cleaner, but it means the pages will load a lot faster. My hubby/web designer was trying to make me cut down  on how many images I posted to compensate for the slow page load time – now that wasn’t gonna happen was it!? What do you think of the new style?

Apart from that don’t forget that the awesome TokyoMade contest is still open. You have until tomorrow to tell me which right if your favourite and why. Come on, you know you want it!

That’s all I really have to report around Rock n Roll Bride HQ right now..let’s see what the rest of blog land has been up to this week shall we?

WIN! ♥ A New York Love Story ♥

This Contest is Now Closed

I ♥  New York. I’ve only been lucky enough to visit the city once before, but I have to say, after Tokyo, it is quite possibly my favourite city in the world (and seriously makes London look rubbish – sorry London.)

As if you New Yorkers weren’t lucky enough, your life is about to get ever just a teensy tiny bit better. Oh yes, I kid you not – I have such a ridiculously amazing contest for you that I wish I could fly the hell over there and win the damn thing myself!

Todd Ritondaro, who has worked on a range of films ranging from national commercials to small indie films, is now branching into the world of wedding film and wants to make a little film about love in the big apple and he needs subjects… That’s where you come in. He is giving away a free film shoot where you will play the lead. He will follow you and your beau documenting your story – where you met, where you hang out, where you fell in love…

I am going to make films exploring the nuances of couples relationships, and film them in the place where they met, the places that are important to them, their regular bars and restaurants, the objects and events they give meaning to, etc.  I’m fascinated by these kinds of dynamics and intricacies in relationships.

I am approaching this idea the same way that I do when I shoot a narrative film, in that there would be a script of some kind, set locations, and a shot list.  In some instances I would light them as well.  Visually, I’m picturing something very cinematic and stylized.  Not your usual wedding video.  I feel like it’s hard to really get this in depth when shooting a couple on their wedding day.  I think this approach is much more interesting and then allows the couple to use it on their website and screen it at their wedding.

So, how about it? To be eligible you must have met and fallen in love in New York City and should still live there now. The shoot will take a full day and will happen sometime in September.
To enter, drop me an email entitled ‘We fell in love in New York City’ and let me know, in no more that 250 words your New York story – how you met, how you fell in love and what New York means to you. Please include a recent photograph in your entry.

I will then choose my top 3 finalists and the readers of Rock n Roll Bride will get to vote for the winners.

What are you waiting for New York? – get on it!

Spending my Birthday at the Los Angeles Blogcademy

After a blissful few days in Portland, it was time to hit the road and fly down to Los Angeles for the next stop on The Blogcademy world tour. I’m not gonna lie, I’ve visited LA once before and didn’t really fall in love with it, but I was looking forward to experiencing it with my girls and seeing if my mind could be changed. I mean obviously the weather made it much more bearable, it was a scorching 25 degrees a lot of the time which was rather blissful, especially when hearing that it was snowing heavily at home!

The thing that drives me crazy about LA is all the damn driving. The city is so spread out that if you’re car-less (as we were) and in the wrong neighbourhood you’re a bit screwed. Luckily we discovered an amazing ride sharing service call Lyft and we stayed in a loft just in the heart of Hollywood, right in the middle of the action. Although it was noisy at the weekends, it was the perfect location for us as it was just a short car ride to our workshop space, McCaddenSpace Studio.

Unlike a lot of LA, there were also plenty of things to do in our neighbourhood that were walking distance. Gala & I quickly became obsessed with the juice bar that turned me into a green juice addict and all three of us agreed that Tender Greens needs to move to our respective cities, like, now. There was a Frog frozen yoghurt stop (yes, the same chain as Snog here in the UK!) and an Urban Outfitters where we stocked up on all our rainbow film!

The workshop fell on my birthday weekend and I was excited to spend it with some many inspiring babes. They spoilt me with unicorns, flowers and yummy cakes!
