Romantic Gothic Wedding Weekend

Aimee and Onyx leaned fully into their shared love of fantasy aesthetics for their wedding. They wrote their vows in a cemetery (where they had their first date!) and were married surrounded by friends who camped out for the weekend. The day was romantic and a bit vampiric. In fact, they wanted their day to feel like it had been plucked straight from a gothic romance novel.

“Half of our wedding was DIY,” they said. “Onyx and her dad decorated the altar with roses, while Aimee built it from scratch.” Together, with a few close friends, they set up everything from the tables and candles to the plates and décor. They also designed their own menus and invitations, did their own makeup, and even handmade each other’s rings. “Crafting the wedding was such a fun, personal part of the process”, they said.

Both brides wore suits and didn’t compromise their personal style or the day. They each also sang to each other during the reception – Aimee with her own take on Mamma Mia, and Onyx with a version of Monster by Marceline from Adventure Time.

However, not everything came easy. “Navigating Christian family members as lesbians is hard,” they admitted. One of her sisters refused to attend, and Onyx felt the absence of her mum and that side of her family. But the day was still filled with love and support. “That said, Onyx’s dad and sister showed up with flying colours. It truly was quality over quantity, they made the day feel full of love and support.”

They saved money by thrifting almost everything, skipping a planner and serving pizza for dinner. “If you have ADHD, start planning as soon as you get engaged – it takes time, and burnout is real,” they said. “Hold each other and remember why you’re getting married. The big day is about you, not anyone else.”

If they could do it again without a budget, they’d just throw a bigger party and add more food. Otherwise, there’s little they’d change. “It was an incredible day, and the support we had from our beautiful friends and family was unmatched. The only regret we mutually have is that we can’t do it all over again… but maybe we can have another bigger celebration on our 10-year anniversary!”
