Giant Nests, Smoke Machines & A Bath of Feathers – An Advanced Flash Workshop at The Photography Farm

The second Photography Farm (remember the first one which I took part in?) took place earlier this month. The subject was advanced flash techniques and using off-camera flash. Organiser Lisa Devlin invited Adam Bronkhorst of Viva Photography, an expert in the field, to teach the latest ‘farmers’ all about using it in their own work.

As part of the experience the students were treated to another amazing styled shoot set up by Hannah of The Tea Set. The inspiration for the shoot was a dark gothic winter vibe, as Lisa explained, “We always knew this Farm was going to have a very different feel to the last one. This time we were exploring advanced flash techniques as opposed to working with available light and it would be a night shoot in the winter. So I got to thinking gothic and got to pinning.”

“The look also started with our couple, the beautiful Martina and Leslie. Martina has great strong features and hair the colour of swan feathers. Once we found the right dresses from the amazing Hope and Harlequin the direction started to be winter/gothic/nordic/gypsy/feathers.”

“We went to The Farm with our awesome stylist Hannah from The Tea Set and after discussing shooting down with the couple laying on the floor, the idea of a big giant nest out in the woods was born. When I saw the Bird of Paradise Hat from Jane Taylor Millinery it was the perfect finishing touch, it is a work of art. Hannah and Jayne once again worked their magic and came up with sets that translated the theme through antique taxidermy, fire, food and a brace of pheasants.”

Isn’t the vibe of these shots just incredible? If you are interested in taking part in the next Advanced Flash workshop at The Photography Farm, it will be taking place between 3st January and 2nd February 2012 and the next Engagement & Wedding farm will be taking place between the 13th-15th March (which I’ll be speaking at).

The price for both two & a half day workshops is just £950 and accommodation and all meals are included. For further info or to book your place, Lisa can be contacted via email or by phone on 01273 231047.

Rock that Dress

An old elevator and a creepy, deserted boiler room made for the setting du jour for Patrica’s Trash the Dress shoot. The venue was actually the basement of the hair salon she works in (Celebrity Hair in Edmonton) Photographer Elizabeth explains:

The elevator in the building is just awesome with old scuffed hardwood floors, wood grate and brick walls surrounding. Patricia worked a pretty traditional looking dress, but the photos are far from traditional! We had some fun with a big chunk of tulle that looks awesome in the photos! We ended he session in the very scary pitch black boiler room. The only light in there was the flashlight that I was using to light the session. It was so quiet and creepy down there and then every so often the boiler would roar to life! Was scary, but totally worth it because look at how awesome the photos are! Just a reminder that you don’t need a pretty building and trees and flowers to take awesome wedding photos!

An Engagement Session on Steriods

Part two of today’s love for The Philippines comes in the form of these stunning images sent by Jeffroger Kho. Arthur & Sheilan are one seriously cool couple and I am nuts about that purple dress!

Jeffroger described this session as ‘an engagement session on steriods’ and I certainly have to agree. It’s not everyday a photographer shoots a couple in a spooky, abandoned house that looks like it belongs on an Asian horror movie set or on a windswept beach standing in a box and wrapped in clingfilm! These shots seriously wouldn’t look out of place in Vogue and I am smitten.

Vast.

There is something a little bit spooky about this day after session and I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is…maybe it’s the dark lipstick vs the pale skin (very stylish don’t ya know!?) or maybe it’s the vast and slightly creepy abandoned location. Either way my inner goth freakin’ loves them!

“More More More!” I hear you cry…Well who am I to stand in the way of gorgeousness?

Kelty of Steep Street (who I have a total girl crush on by the way) send these to me and Eeeek! aren’t they stunning? Kendra & Chris were up for anything for their engagement shoot and so Kelty took them on a magical mystical tour – from a spooky tree in Golden Gate Park to an adorable picnic location and a stunning wide open spaces style shoot.

Thanks, as always, to the gorgeous Kelty for sharing her amazing work! I am aleady looking forward to posting her next – super exciting – wedding…stay tuned for all the info!

Spooky & Dark

Filipino photographer Jeffroger Kho sent me these stunning engagements which perfectly reflect his wild, crazy, and downright addictive’  style.

These are kinda spooky and dark but I seriously love them (yes even the creepy doll) Check it out…

The client Mark and Johanna are photographers and very artistic individuals.  You can check out their site here as well Happy Garaje Graphic Design and Illustration.  Their style is really dark, desaturated, and textured.  And I am happy that I was able to capture that and also reflect the clients style.

The outfits are from the clients own wardrobe.  They pretty much have everything already.  They collect a lot of old stuff as well so it quite reflects much of their personality.  I believe that this set is very Rock n Roll because it’s different, downright crazy, non-conventional, and most importantly it reflects much of the personality of the client and not just a random theme just for the sake of having a theme.

Thanks Jeffroger!

ps be sure to vote for your favourites to win the Tinywater photo shoot contest, but pleeeease only one vote per person, lets keep it fair people! (plus I can see if you’re multiple voting so there really is no point.)
