So many weddings take years of planning, are filled with packed schedule and a carefully choreographed morning apart. Amy and Steve planned theirs in six months and spent the morning of theirs setting up the venue together.
They snapped up last-minute deal at The Shack Revolution in Hereford. Even though they live in Yorkshire, they’d struggled to find a local place they loved quite as much. So, they made quick decisions, and planned the day around the things they actually cared about. The result was a colourful midweek celebration filled with grazing boards, pizza, disco balls, trainers and a Pulp Fiction dance routine.

“We just wanted the day to feel like us,” Amy explained. “Neither of us wanted to be the centre of attention (albeit that’s difficult on your wedding day), neither of us wanted the ‘big white wedding’, we just wanted something that portrayed our personalities – colourful, relaxed and a little funky.”

Their ceremony wasn’t until 3pm, giving them time to spend the morning together and finish setting up the space with friends. Bright pink and red dried florals from Petalhead Flowers sat alongside disco balls and a monochrome ceremony backdrop, creating a look that felt playful and didn’t take itself too seriously.

The entire colour palette actually started with Amy’s bright red and pink Adidas Spezials. “Amy hates wearing heels”, Steve laughed. “So, it was always known from day one that she would never even put herself through the pain and agony for a day.” The colour of the trainers became the inspiration for the flowers, décor and styling across the day.

The ceremony itself was simple and personal. Amy and Steve chose not to write their own vows, preferring to exchange letters privately the following morning instead. But one moment carried particular significance. Amy lost her mum, Geraldine, to cancer in 2021. Before the ceremony began, guests stood as Steve walked down the aisle alone carrying a bouquet of white roses. He placed them on a reserved front-row chair in her honour.

Once the formalities were done, guests headed straight for a grazing table that looked capable of feeding a small village. Amy and Steve had no interest in a traditional sit-down meal. Instead, charcuterie boards appeared immediately after the ceremony, cocktails flowed in the courtyard and games took over the afternoon. Later came a pizza truck and a brownie stack instead of a wedding cake. Guests could choose between triple chocolate, Mini Egg and Magic Star cookie bar flavours, while the leftovers doubled as road trip snacks over the following days. “While we both do love a good slice of cake, brownies are just so much more fun”, they said.

One of the biggest hits of the evening started as a simple DIY project. Amy and Steve created a ‘First Dance Sweepstake’ board and asked guests to guess the song they would dance to. Obvious choices sat alongside deliberate red herrings and a few selections inspired by Steve’s love of 1970s music. But most people got it wrong. When Chuck Berry’s You Never Can Tell started playing, Amy and Steve headed straight into the famous dance sequence from Pulp Fiction.

For couples planning their own weddings, Amy and Steve have some great advice: “Do whatever the hell you want to do. Don’t let people’s snide little comments put you off your visions or dreams, it’s not their day it’s yours. People should be honoured to be invited and included, an invitation does not give them opinion and input privileges!”
