When Alexis, a mezzo-soprano opera singer, and Nic, a graphic designer and rock climbing instructor, began planning their wedding, they set out to create a day that reflected their shared love for music, art, and playful, campy romance. Their celebration, held at the Baltimore Museum of Art, was pure art in itself, weaving together Sapphic energy, classical music, and special personal touches.

Blending influences from Greek mythology, classical music, and nature, the couple were inspired by the grand architecture of the BMA, with its towering Greek columns. Live music played a central role, evolving throughout the evening to match the changing atmosphere – from baroque masterpieces to pop covers. “Mozart and classical music were central to the wedding, reflecting our shared love of opera”, Alexis told us. The live music transitioned through different historical periods and included everything from Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba for the processional to live band covers of Earth, Wind & Fire and ABBA for the reception Their first dance was to a live performance of For Good from Wicked.

The couple designed most of the décor themselves, with the help of We Do Event Design. A full-sized antique carousel horse, owned by Nic’s parents, became a functional photo-op with a neon Riding Off Into the Sunset sign above it. They created an ombré effect with the table settings, moving from soft pastels at the edges to bold hues in the centre. Guests received miniature Greek bust figurines as favours and they were all given fans, also designed by the couple with ‘punny’ phrases on them to keep them cool in the August heat.

The ceremony was officiated by a friend. Their vows were written the morning of, separately but while thinking of each other. “It made them feel fresh, real, and emotional”, Alexis explained.

Their highlights? “Running through the museum at night with Nic, feeling like something out of a romcom”, said Alexis. “Also, our red room portraits made me feel stunning, and we nailed our aisle kiss dip on the way out of the ceremony.” For Nic it was all about the food: “Eating appetizers together post-ceremony before mingling at the cocktail hour”, they said. “Also, finally getting to sit and eat salmon and truffle mushroom pasta!”

Looking back, Alexis and Nic say they wouldn’t change a thing about their wedding, though they do have some advice for other couples: “Don’t be afraid to make bold choices, and remember that your wedding is for you. Tradition only matters if it means something to you. Be authentic, be you, and the people who really love you will always be there.”
