Lisa and Logan’s wedding was kitschy, camp, and covered in pink. Their playful Palm Springs day began with them saying their vows at Moorten Botanical Garden, they then cruised around in a bubblegum-coloured Ford Thunderbird and took portraits at the iconic Trixie Motel.

“We wanted our theme to be fun, pink, and kitschy”, Lisa told us. “We both are huge fans of Ru Paul’s Drag Race, so getting ready and taking our photos at the Trixie Motel was a no-brainer for us.”

They both wore all pink and asked their nine guests to do the same. With such a small group, there was no need for formality. They got ready together, walked each other down the aisle and skipped almost every tradition. “We honestly skipped most traditions”, she continued. “We got ready together, walked each other down the aisle, didn’t do any dances or formalities.”

Both had been married before and knew how quickly wedding planning can turn overwhelming. This time they chose the opposite approach. They kept the focus on joy, friendship and what felt authentic to them. One of their friends officiated, which gave them the freedom to design a ceremony with no patriarchal language. “Traditional wedding language comes from a history where marriage was a transfer of ownership rather than an equal partnership. By choosing to leave that language out we honoured our belief that marriage is about mutual respect, equality and shared commitment.”

Halfway through the ceremony, the script was interrupted in the best way. It was their friend Tyler’s birthday, so everyone broke into a chorus of Happy Birthday. “It was so fun and silly, and he was so surprised.”

Dinner followed at High Moon Palm Springs. They rented out the entire restaurant so the group could gather around one long table. Thirteen people, including the photographers, shared food, swapped stories about how they all met their partners and listened to speeches from Lisa and Logan’s parents.

“There are absolutely no rules when it comes to wedding planning”, the couple said. “So, don’t take yourself too seriously. Be as fun, weird, silly as you want. If you find yourself squeezing yourself into a mould because ‘you only get married once’ don’t fall for it (sometimes you get married twice, and the second time is even better!).”

They left the day with no regrets and plenty of advice for anyone considering an alternative path. “Forego a wedding cake and get donuts for your guests, wear a dress that’s not white, and walk down the aisle together if that’s what you want. Just spend the day the way that you want to spend it. Your wedding day is your day – not your sibling’s day, not your parents’ day, not your friend’s day. So, plan your wedding around your wants and needs, not anyone else’s.”
