Don’t Quit Your Day Job

December 27, 2013

The majority of the women we meet and teach at The Blogcademy are just starting their blogs or businesses and most of them simultaneously hold down a full or part time job. Most of them tell us that their ultimate goal is to quit these jobs so they can focus on working for themselves. While we encourage them to do that when they’re ready, we’re also keen to share with them the huge benefits of working a day job while pursuing their dreams.

Don’t Wait to Start on Those New Year’s Resolutions – Take Action Now!

I rarely set New Year's resolutions, and if I do they're usually just intentions to do certain things better or more productively. Statistically speaking New Year's resolutions usually fail anyway so why set yourself up for a fall like that?! But I am a bit believer in goal setting. Goals focus the mind and give you something concrete to aim for so you're not just flailing around and making it all up as you go along (well, for some of the time). However instead of waiting until January 1st to start that new project, I'd like to encourage you to start working on it right now. Here's why:

The Secret of Success

I kinda hate it when people ask me what I do for a living. It's not that I'm embarrassed, but when you reply with "I'm a blogger", it's usually followed by a million other questions like "Is that like Facebook?", "What's a blog?" and "How do you make money?" Another round of questions that I seem to get asked a lot are about how I became successful and profitable at something so many others try, and fail, to do. Like I have a secret that others haven't quite figured out yet or something. People always want to know if there was one defining moment or a turning point that took my blog from a small hobby on the side to what it is today... but I'm sorry to report that the answer is always no.

Business Bites: What Goal Would You Set Yourself If You Knew You Couldn’t Fail?

Kat

November 15, 2013

With my adventures down under soon drawing to a close, this week I've really started to think about my goals and plans for 2014. While, yes, it may be a little intimating to ponder a whole new set of tasks and things that need to be achieved, it is one of my favourite things to do. Someone in our Auckland workshop this week asked me why it was important to set yourself goals and commented that she was scared to do so in case she didn't achieve them. I told her what I'm telling you now.

Well firstly, congratulations. It's going to be a super exciting time for you. If you want to keep blogging you're going to need to have a plan because I imagine you're going to have your hands full! A blog is like a baby in itself. It needs regular love and attention or it won't continue to grow. So, yes, if you want to keep the blog going in some capacity, you need to be posting regularly. The most important thing is to find schedule that works for you.

Business Bites: On The Road Again

Kat

November 8, 2013

Hello from Auckland! Our alarms went off at 5am this morning and we were back on the road, heading to New Zealand for our third class on this Antipodean adventure. Although Gala, Shauna and I have been having an absolutely fantastic time down under, it really has been all go go go. We've been pretty un-Rock n Roll and spent most of our down time in our PJs, laying about in whatever hotel or apartment we happen to be hauled up in.

These days it seems that branding is the hot topic within the wedding industry, especially for photographers. We certainly discuss it quite a lot at Photography Farm and we are very lucky to have photographer's brand expert Melissa Love join us to share her expertise. When I first started shooting weddings, brand simply wasn't an issue. It was enough to take good photographs and make sure that you were found in the right places. However there has never been more wedding photographers competing against each other for potential business, so of course branding can be one of the elements that can help us to stand out.

I used to make so many excuses for not travelling. "Oh I like being at home", "I've just got too much work to do" and "I hate airports" were my favourite justifications. And then The Blogcademy came crashing into my life avoiding travelling just was not an option! Now, I literally can't get enough. I love love love experiences new places and meeting new people. I'm even starting to weirdly enjoy airports.

I Don’t Care About Blog Comments… and You Shouldn’t Either

October 22, 2013

OK so that's not strictly true. I love to get feedback from my readers and it's awesome to see so many encouraging words after I've published something. However recently there's been a massive shift in how people interact with and read blogs and, for the most part, these factors mean that across the board blog comments are going down. If you think of your comments as some kind of indicator to the success of an article, then this sudden lack of validation can be incredibly discouraging.
