Andy and Lillie’s wedding day unfolded on the groom’s family properly in the Appalachian foothills. The couple, who had known each other since they were five years old, wanted a sustainably-focused wedding that reflected and celebrated their history together.

“The location of wedding being Andy’s family property was a special touch since we grew up going there,” the bride began. “We attempted to be as sustainably focused as possible minimising waste, gifting left over florals to the retirement home in town, using biodegradable cups and vintage glassware. The wedding was also very smoke friendly with a 4/20 vibe through out the day and night. Joints were ablaze, smoke lifted into the are and laughter bellowed from guests.”

The theme of their day? A whimsical soiree set against the backdrop of smoky Blue Ridge mountain mist and spring wildflowers. The couple, who love to camp and spend time outdoors, wanted their celebration to feel like a relaxed gathering with the people they care about.

The ceremony was a celebration of their love and connection to nature. Lillie walked down the aisle to Lana Del Rey’s Video Games and Andy’s oldest brother officiated. His words compared Andy to a strong, steadfast mountain and Lillie to a free-flowing, ever-changing wind. The ceremony was simple yet perfectly at home in the place that had shaped their lives.

The reception, like the ceremony, was all about personal touches. Lillie, being a florist by trade, took the reins on the florals, creating the stunning ceremony arch and installations. The reception space was a DIY effort, with eco-friendly touches throughout, including place cards with wildflower seeds and vintage tableware to keep waste to a minimum.

“I felt very prepared since I have worked in the wedding industry for a long time”, Lillie continued. “But because I was so comfortable and confident, I didn’t ask for enough help and wish I had in the moment. However, taking everything I had learned and consumed for years working in the wedding industry and moulding it into my own vision was my favourite part of planning. A fairy meadow filled with love was my vision and it happened!”

In reflecting on their day and wedding industry, Lillie wants to encourage more creativity and fun in wedding planning, particularly in the south of the US. “So often, people think their wedding needs to be ultra classic and toned down, I believe the opposite”, she said. “I think showcasing the couple’s personality is so important. Favourite hobbies, colours, looks, and sounds should all be highlighted on the day. Our advice to other alternative couples would be to make a list TOGETHER of your non-negotiables when you first get engaged and hold true to those no matter what anyone else says. You will never regret doing what YOU want!”
