Flaunt It with Fur Coat No Knickers & Win the Dress of Your Choice from the New Collection!

In some ways I’m a terrible wedding blogger. I am ‘real wedding’ obsessed and I love to see the ins & outs of people’s actual weddings or read about their experiences, but in terms of what’s going on in the ‘industry’ I usually couldn’t give a toss. It’s also extremely rare that I ever get excited by anything to do with bridal fashion and I try to avoid fashion shows at all costs…sorry but they’re usually such a yawnfest. However when it matters, when someone actually does something new or exciting I do then get really passionate, chomping at the bit to feature it as soon as possible – often with a lot of extra exclamation points!

Laura & Emma of Fur Coat No Knickers have been long term friends of the blog. They loaned me dresses when no one knew who the hell I was and they always have Cava on the go when I pop into their central London boutique. We’re clearly a match made in heaven. So when they told me about their idea to create their own line of wedding dresses, inspired by their most popular genuine vintage styles but with the fuller figure in mind, I literally whooped with joy.

Introducing, Flaunt It

The collection is made up of five dresses, each designed with original vintage styles in mind. Laura & Emma have taken their combined experience of over 20 years in costume design (working on productions like the Lion King, Shakespeare at the Royal Shakespeare Company and shows at the National Theatre) and 5 years of owning their own vintage wedding dress shop and created this one of a kind and truly exciting capsule collection.

They say, “We love our vintage dresses. But the one problem with them is not being able to fit the more curvy figure. Vintage dresses are, by their nature, on the small side. Although we do search and search for more realistic sizes, there have been occasions where we just can’t help. We hated that. So we set about designing a new collection, that would be every bit as beautiful as all the dresses in our shop, but available up to a size 22. And that collection is called Flaunt It.”

“We based our designs on vintage dresses we have found and loved over the years, with shapes that are very flattering. Then we set out to find fabric that, when hanging in our shop next to the original dresses, didn’t stand out as being too modern. And with a mix of carefully chosen, beautiful lace, tulle and silk organza, we managed to achieve just that. We also wanted our customers to be able to customise the dresses, by taking away sleeves, adding different fullnesses of petticoats, coloured binding, sashes and headpieces and by tweaking the fit to the individual. Just like we do with the vintage dresses.”

“We did this shoot in our own shop and called up some of our past brides to model for us! We wanted to show how amazing these dresses look on real girls and not on models.”

And here they are ladies, aren’t they beautiful?

Gin & It

Gin & It is a cute but funky, knee length sixties style silk organza skirt, with pretty ivory lace illusion bodice and duchess satin trim. The skirt is full silk organza with a deep double hem. The dress goes perfectly with cool shoes, a silk sash and a bound petticoat.

Just like it’s namesake, Bellini is an instant classic. A fifties inspired, warm cream bodice with an elegant boat neck and lace overlay with a slightly longer silk organza skirt. Bellini is also available sleeveless and looks lovely with a birdcage or classic veil.

Beauty Spot

Beauty Spot is a tea length, fifties style halter neck dress with a sweetheart neckline, a dropped waist, the tiniest dot tulle and duchess satin boned duchess waist panel. Instantly flattering this is sure to be a best seller.

Loved Up

For the romantic bride, Loved Up is perfect. The forties tea length tulle skirt sits perfectly with the cut through dropped waist bodice and lace motif trim. It’s beautiful open neckline and hand-applied lace detail is utterly stunning and the dress can be made with or without small lace ruched sleeves. Loved up is perfect with a veil or just a flower and lace hairpiece

Champagne Fizz

The breathtaking long-length thirties style Champagne Fizz is made in a stunning flower ivory and delicate metallic lace overlay with an illusion bodice. The diagonal cut of this gown is super flattering as is the flowing skirt. Pretty waterfall sleeves and diagonal front sash can be added on request. This baby would look incredible with long drop earrings and a deco style headpiece.

    I’m getting married on 11.10.13 – eeeeek!!

I would love to be a fur coat, no knickers bride for a few reasons.
1 – I don’t currently plan on no knickers, but a fur coat is def in the pipeline (hoping it’s cold enough in Oct).
2 – These dresses are stunning, and Laura & Emma have nailed exactly what I want – a beautiful 50’s dress, but customised how I want it – exactly as they’ve described above. So far, I’ve seen lots of things I like about different dresses that I want to be able to combine together.
    3 – Amazing!

Our wedding will be 22 February, 2014.

We are plop, smack-dab in the middle of the U.S. (Nebraska) and options are really limited here. Could I look like every other bride? I ‘spose so, but that ain’t gonna happen.

What would I love to rock on our most special day? GIN & IT, hands down. I’m inspired and excited by the retro, classic, gorgeous weddings coming out of the UK right now, and this is how I see our day being just perfect.

I can’t stand the thought of blending in to the background of of strapless, mermaid-style dresses. Let me be a Fur Coat – No Knickers bride and I will not disappoint!

Don’t worry, travel to London would not be a problem – knowing there’s a dress on the other side would make the trip just exponentially worth it.

    xx Angela

Hi we are getting married 22.6.13

As a mum of three I’d love to be a fur coat and no knickers bride. Always juggling work and my gorgeous children this will be my chance for me! No knickers might mean baby number 4:-)

Well done on using real brides on your website so lovely to see them all and not all a size 8! Xx

  4. Lauren

After 11 years of adventure, friendship, being sweethearts and partners-in-crime, my mister proposed to me in a ramshackle treehouse on a magical tropical island. We are getting hitched on our 12th anniversary on September 7th this year, on a Somerset farm. All you need is L O V E…. but a killer dress with a rock ‘n’ roll spirit from Fur Coat No Knickers would be truly magnificent!

Hellooooooo Gin & It (i’m in love!!)

I’m getting married on 2nd of November this year in London. FCNK have captured the essence of vintage eras for gals with a little more boom in the box. As such a gal I’d love to be a FCNK bride, it would knock the socks off him indoors and sure beats a kaftan hands down..

Following 8 months of panic since the proposal and the roller coaster decision of “big wedding, little wedding, no wedding” my fiancée Mike and I have finally settled on heading to NYC for a 3 minute quickie in City Hall. With 2 best friends as our witnesses we are finally making plans, but the dress is a whole other issue.
I’m confident, extrovert and pretty damn good at my job, so why does the thought of dress shopping fill me with dread? Apple shaped, broad shouldered with a pair of skinny ankles, Bellini is the first dress I’ve seen where I’ve realised I too deserve to feel like a princess on November 1st 2013.
Mike too will be pleased if I leave the nike’s at home, for just one day. Help me ladies.

  7. Clare

We’re getting married on 21st Feb 2014 and these dresses are exactly what I’ve been dreaming of!

I’m sick of looking at a thousand dresses which all look the same, which are designed for a size 10 & badly stretched up, and where the samples are all teeny so you have to try them on with bulldog clips & string holding it on!

I am a big believer in UK-made fashion – no Chinese sweatshop factory for me thanks. We have such fabulous designers and makers here and I want to celebrate that. FCNK are a real breath of fresh air in such a potentially tedious industry, their mix of sass and style and sense of humour is just awesome.

One of these dresses would really add the sparkle to our day – something which shows off my va-va-voom curves and would make me dance down the aisle to my fabulous man 😀

  8. Broke'n'Betrothed

I’m the one who never wanted to get married. Until I met Him. Friday 18th August 2006, 3:30pm. We laid all our cards on the table during our first, crazy, hedonistic, incredible, 67 hour date and the precise moment that he declared he would never marry again it was, inexplicably, suddenly the only thing I’d ever wanted.

We were living together within weeks, we merged our vast vinyl collection (music, not fetish clobber) within months, and we had silver rings made for each other within a year. This was our version of commitment.

Until, 6 years after we met when he ruddy well went & pulled the cowhide from under my red, suede creepers and proposed (and, readers, let me just say that it wasn’t exactly in romantic circumstances and not a tale for the grandchildren). Lots of swearing ensued (me), lots of laughing (both) swiftly followed by a big, fat YES.

I’m the one who never wanted a wedding dress. But I’ve dared to buy a fantastic pair of beautiful, fifties style sling-backs and I’ve made myself the cutest birdcage veil (both of which would look absolutely darling with the gorgeous Bellini frock) So who knows….

Fur Hat and No Knickers? hell yeah!

    Yours in Love & Squalor

Buxom, broke and betrothed & jumpin’ that broom with my eternal Plus One on 16th August 2013, 2 days before the 7th Anniversary of our first, Rock’n’Roll date.

  9. Broke'n'Betrothed

Ok, so I admit it might help if I get the shop name correct – Fur COAT and no Knickers, COAT, COAT, COAT! Oops…

  10. Sarah MIlligan

Well I waited a long time and kissed a lot of frogs and finally found my handsome prince in sunny Cornwall. To be honest I would marry him tomorrow in my PJ’s rather than having 100 people look at me on 12th oct .. I am enjoying every part of planning the wedding apart from the thought of buying my dress… I want to look gorgeous and make him do a double take but I’m too scared to actually go and try any dresses on. All I can think about is me trying to squidge my curvaceous body into a horrrible shiny “plus size” meringue and ending up in tears on the dressing room floor.. I was so excited to find the FCNK website… Finally.. That’s what I have been looking for… Beautiful dresses that celebrate my shape rather than hide it… I know that special dresses like the stunning “Loved Up” come at a price but sadly this is way beyond my means.. Please pick me and I will be sure to bring wheel barrow loads of homemade chocolate brownies to my fittings… I have everything crossed… And so does the dog!

  11. Janet Armer

My wedding is 17/08/13, unlucky for some but definitely not for me! I am a student with limited means and big dreams, and have always wanted a vintage 50’s rockabilly themed wedding. If I won a dress from your collection it would be the icing on our homemade Victoria sponge cake. I have the Hell bunny polka dot bridesmaid’s dresses, the village hall in red white and blue, the 50’s Ford Popular and all the ideas still floating around in my brain but I don’t yet have the dress. I would love to win one of yours! Xx

  12. Rachel Roberts

These are the most beautiful dresses I have ever seen. I live in Cornwall and we are positively lacking in gorgeous dress shops! We are planning a wedding in a Cornish forest for May next year, which might mean I have to wear welly’s, which of course means I will have to have the most beautiful dress I can possibly find. If I win one it also means I can buy my daughter the bridesmaid dress of her dreams, she is thinking ‘flower fairy’ and who am I to disagree, the contrast between her and my heavily tattooed boyfriend is always a head turner!!
Despite my boyfriends two left feet he is letting me take the lead with some jive classes at our wedding, after the disaster we had at Twinwood festival in the dance tent I never thought I would dance with him again, but if I were to dance in one of these dresses I don’t think I would care how many times he stepped on my feet or nearly took me out whilst trying to do the lindyhop!

  13. Anna

Something new, something old, borrowed and blue
There’s nothing organised and so much to do,
21st July 2013 is the day
It will arrive in no time as they say.

5 years on, he did the right thing,
Got drunk on holiday and presented the ring.
Looking forward to the rest of our lives
Being all “loved up” and being a wife.

With a Fur Coat, No knickers, as I hope to be
walking down the isle (fingers crossed, not literally)
Wearing a beautiful gown for all to see
Crack open that champers, its our party!
