Cheap Wedding Ideas That Don’t Actually Feel Cheap

A cheap wedding and a bad wedding are not the same thing. Some of the most joyful, memorable weddings cost very little money, and some of the most expensive weddings feel like a corporate conference with flowers.

The difference is rarely the budget. It’s how couples choose to spend it.

If you’re planning a wedding without a huge budget, your goal probably isn’t to make everything as cheap as possible. It’s to spend money where it matters and skip the things nobody really notices anyway.

Here are some genuinely cheap wedding ideas that still feel thoughtful, fun and completely intentional.

Choose a Venue That Already Looks Good

The fastest way to blow your budget is to pick a blank space and try to transform it. Fun, yes! But also very expensive, especially if it’s a massive space.

A venue that already has character will save you a huge amount on décor. Think pubs, small music venues, community halls, restaurants, breweries, art galleries… Or if you’re lucky enough to know someone with a big house or garden, it’s time to call in that favour!

If the space already has atmosphere, good lighting and interesting details, you won’t need to spend hundreds on flowers, backdrops or elaborate table styling. A good venue does most of the work for you.

Keep the Guest List Small

It’s probably not the advice you want to hear, but it’s one of the biggest budget savers. Every guest adds cost with food, drinks, chairs, invitations, table settings – even needing a bigger space to fit them all in will add to the cost. And those numbers add up quickly.

A smaller wedding means you can spend more on the things that actually improve the experience for the people who are there. Better food, a great photographer, or a really good band.

And honestly, intimate weddings often feel more relaxed and personal anyway. The vibes will be better with a guest list of 20 where everyone genuinely wants to be there than 200 where some people just accepted the invite for a nice day out.

Skip the Traditional Catering

Wedding catering is expensive because it’s formal, labour-intensive and often designed for huge guest lists. The cost of raw ingredients has also skyrocketed recently. There’s a reason why food (and drink) is usually the biggest single expense of every wedding.

There are plenty of alternatives that feel far more fun and will be cheaper. Think: pizza trucks, taco bars, BBQ, loaded baked potatoes, fish and chips, your favourite local takeaway, a buffet organised with your local pub or café.

People rarely remember the plated chicken dish they were served at a wedding. They do remember eating great food and having a good time.

Rent or Buy Secondhand Décor

Most wedding décor gets used once and then chucked in landfill. Which is exactly why buying secondhand makes so much sense.

Facebook Marketplace, Vinted, eBay and local wedding resale groups are full of candles, table runners, signage, easels and other bits from couples who just got married. You can often buy them cheaply and then resell them again after your wedding!

Wear Something That Feels Amazing, and Not Just Because it’s Expensive

Wedding fashion is one of the most flexible parts of your budget. Some people spend thousands on outfits. Others find something perfect for £50 in a vintage shop. There are incredible wedding dresses and suits on resale sites, some fashion brands now make great bridal collections (or have pieces which could easily translate to wedding wear), and vintage tailoring can look incredible with a few alterations.

What matters is how you feel wearing it.

Use Music You Actually Love

It goes without saying that a great band or DJ can make or break a party, and a playlist is unlikely to being the same vibes. BUT if having a hopping dancefloor all night isn’t a priority for you, then a DIY playlist and a good sound system will work just fine!

Ask a music-obsessed friend to help you build the playlist. Start with songs you and your partner genuinely love and add a few guaranteed dancefloor classics.

Choose One Thing to Go Big On

When everything is expensive, it’s tempting to cut everything equally. But weddings feel better when there’s one element that really stands out. Maybe it’s a great photographer. Maybe it’s incredible food. Maybe it’s a ridiculous late night karaoke session or a drag performer.

Pick the thing that matters most to you and put a little more of your budget there. Let the rest be simple.

Rethink What a Wedding “Should” Look Like

The biggest cost savings usually happen when couples stop trying to recreate the standard wedding formula.

Registry office ceremony followed by drinks at the pub.
Backyard wedding with a food truck.
Eloping somewhere beautiful and celebrating later with friends.

All of these can cost far less than a traditional venue package, and they often feel more personal too.

Cheap Doesn’t Mean Bad

A low budget wedding doesn’t have to look carelessly thrown together. Focus on good music, food people actually want to eat, and an atmosphere where everyone feels relaxed. Those are the things guests remember. No one talks about the chair covers or the decorations the next day, they talk about how beautiful the ceremony was and how much fun they had. And isn’t that the whole point?
