A Very Non Wedding: Whit & Colby

As a girl who’s more than slightly obsessed with weddings and photography, there’s pretty much nothing more thrilling to me than discovering new (to me) wedding photographer that is INCREDIBLE. It doesn’t happen very often, but when it does I feel like I’ve won the wedding-blogging-lottery. And don’t even get me started on what happens when I discover a videographer with as much talent as this. Actual tears people, there were actual tears.

I saw these images and the video on Saturday afternoon. A photographer friend of mine emailed me the link and said, and I quote, “This is possibly the best wedding film and set of images I’ve ever seen… I thought you might like to see! Holy shit it’s all so beautiful.” And you know what dude, I couldn’t agree more.

Just stop what you’re doing for 4 minutes, enlarge the video to full screen view, and completely immerse yourself in this…

I quickly shared the link with a couple of photographer friends of mine and we spent the next hour messaging back and forth about our obsession with the entire thing. Who were these amazingly awesome people? Where did Whit & Colby get off being so damn bad ass, sexy and cool? Who was this photographer? Who was this videographer? How could we subtly insert ourselves into their lives?! Could I pull off an undercut?

I just knew that I had to share it on Rock n Roll Bride so I emailed the photographer, Brooke Davis, to ask if I could. I then crossed all my fingers and toes and hoped and prayed it wasn’t already promised to another wedding blog. Within an hour she emailed me back to say she’d be thrilled for me to feature it and that she thought it was perfect for my blog. EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK.

And then came the bombshell. It wasn’t a real wedding. And you know what, I was initially a little disappointed. Whit & Colby are a real couple living together in Utah but this wasn’t their actual wedding day. DAMN IT (PS guys, if you do ever get married pleeeease just do it exactly like this) But then I thought about it, and actually in a way, this is even more amazing because it was a set up shoot.

Photographer Brooke and videographer Chris live and work in Utah where they say they’ve been struggling to book the kinds of clients who are having the style of wedding that they really want to shoot. But instead of just sitting around wondering why the work wasn’t landing in their laps, they called upon some friends, grabbed a second hand wedding dress (which had been Whit’s Mother’s!) and pulled together the non-wedding of their dreams.

I think the thing I adore the most about these images is the people in them. So many wedding blogs (this one included) blog weddings that are so incredibly detail heavy. And I know that to many brides & grooms-to-be it can be overwhelming. It can seem like your wedding won’t compare or match up. It can appear that without all that ‘stuff’ your wedding won’t be ‘blog-worthy’… and oh boy does this shoot show you that thoughts like that are utter nonsense! This has got to be my favourite feature in a really long time, and there isn’t a sniff of a mason jar, a hint of bunting or a single friggin’ cupcake in sight.

I hope this set of images and video will inspire some of my bride & groom readers to think outside the box with their wedding plans and ideas, and to make you realise that it’s not the ‘stuff’ that makes a wedding, but the people. And the love.

But almost more than that, I hope it gives my wedding supplier readers a big kick up the backside to go out there and shoot what they love. Do something different. Be daring. Shoot something crazy, sexy, new, inspiring and cool. Stop taking the easy option by pulling together shoots that we’ve all seen before. Bunting, cupcakes and vintage crockery are great – I love them – but we’ve seen them over and over and over. Let’s showcase something DIFFERENT. Show people what you can really do. Show people what it is that you love and what it is that makes you stand out in this over-saturated market. Be an artist. Love what you shoot. Shoot what you love. It will ooze out of your images and you’ll be a better creative for it.

Thank you Brooke, Chris, Whit & Colby for sharing these with us today. You have a new superfan in me. And Utah-based Rock n Roll Brides – book them, book them now!

  9. Oh man, I saw the video before I read the bombshell and now I am a little sad, I was so happy believing it was real… still, absolutely amazing, I love everything!!!

  10. EPIC. I am soooo excited by this. Brooke’s attitude is just so inspiring to me- she wasn’t getting what she wanted so she went out there and made it herself! I hope it leads to lots of the right bookings for her. I’ve been feeling the same about my portfolio and I’m so excited to plan something for the spring. Do you think Brooke will start a trend of couples boudoir shoots? A bit like the Kirsty Mitchell effect on Lavender fields?!

  11. Christie

Of course it’s not a real wedding – where’s Aunt Myrna! Seriously good stuff although I’d recommend an edited video as an add on purchase. I don’t care how cool and rock and roll this couple is – their kids are gonna burn rubber fast forwarding through the first 45 seconds:) Ewwww my parents:) Beautiful thanks for sharing.

  12. I am so excited for Brooke and Chris! They are both amazingly talented and I enjoy working with them! It is so nice to be apart of something new and fresh! I have to agree with Lydia above, I hope Brooke starts a trend with couples boudoir! That would be so sexy!!!

  16. Every now and again something comes along, blows you away and reminds you of your initial love of and enthusiasm for weddings and the industry. We all need this kind of inspiration and this work has taken things to another level.

  17. This is absolutely incredible! Thanks for sharing this, Kat!! :) I am recently engaged and was hoping to do something similar with a dessert backdrop!

  18. Oops… (sorry) oh my god… The excitement was just too much I posted too early!! This video is actually amazing, I have just broken in to a cold sweat and tears pricked my eyes, it’s so raw it’s beautiful!! God this shows we all need to be different, this just stood out and caught my eyes in so many ways… I totally agree about wondering about the pink undercut… This is so good….. Love love love and want to see more… Wish I lived in Utah!!

  19. This is absolutely my favourite thing in the world right now… I can’t stop watching!! I’m in love with this couple!! And it has absolutely confirmed I still want pink hair when I eventually get married!!

  20. Brilliant Photography. Brilliant Videography…

    But.

It really saddens me to see things like this. It’s so fake, it’s so staged it’s just not right. A wedding is about a day and all those moments that happened between everybody on that day that aren’t staged, not about forging memories to show to all your friends how great you are. Real moments. Weddings are becoming more and more about the latest trends than anything else.

The day is about 2 people, family and friends, everything is just getting over the top. Why should brides think outside the box? Just to have their special and private day published on a blog. It looks like the entire day was spent posing for the camera. I don’t see anything different to any other weddings I’ve really seen, just a few more naked bodies and them draped all over each other in fabulous locations and interiors.

It’s fashion photography, not wedding photography. You should not be encouraging this, you should be encouraging people to have the day they want not feel like they have to have a day like this. Every couple is different, some like to pose, others do not like to be in front of the camera.

Would I like to shoot a wedding like this. Yes. I suppose I would but only because they are a lovely looking couple, they have a lovely house and they went to some lovely locations. As one photographer said when asked what clients he prefers..His response…Rich & Beautiful, but not everybody is rich and beautiful. Wedding blogs try very hard to show all the unique and wonderful couples out there, the result is they are all starting to look the same. I don’t think I have browsed a wedding blog with slightly unattractive couples at an ordinary and normal venue. Where are the community halls that have been made up, the small back garden weddings e.t.c

I would like to encourage you to think inside the box and start showing REAL Weddings that the average Joe/Joanna Blogs have, because as the link above clearly states, these wild and unique weddings are now starting to become boring to look at.

“IDS” this shoot has so much soul. Its a real couple and despite it being a real wedding or not I think its friggin’ amazing.

  22. I am sure you’ve heard of of Jonas Peterson. It’s nothing different to what he does and a lot of other photographers. I can’t comment too much on the video. Whether it has soul or not, it just feels really staged.

If these were all unique moments that happened as they happened it, for me, it would be a different story. All I see, soul or no soul are staged moments.

It is obviously each to their own, I have just shown my partner and she feels exactly the same, without any encouragement her words were..’It’s Like A Fashion Shoot’ not a wedding.

  23. I understand it’s a non wedding and I understand that every couple has different requirements. If you want posed shots then this is perfect, if you want natural then this isn’t going to be for you.

The photographers mention they are struggling to get business,. I don’t see how the above helps apart from the clear advertising on this blog. It’s the same old type of thing, posed shots, great locations, beautiful couple e.t.c You have to want that and if people find their site naturally and want what they offer I am sure they’ll book.

Personally. I see nothing different here…They are good at what they do, but so are so many other people, I don’t see why these guys are put on a pedestal..

“IDS” I personally think these shots and this couple are amazing and gorgeous which is why I published it

  25. It’s just my opinion, I am sure people swing both ways on this one, photographers, brides e.t.c I’m not saying I’m right just my thoughts when I initially saw these shots…

I think the production value on the images and videography are great and can’t knock them there, just not for me but I wish them both all the best in terms of business..

  26. I was completely blown away the first time I saw these images – they’re stunning.

I have to say that I disagree completely with IDS – for me, these images seem so much more real than most real weddings. The getting ready is real – not posed shots and shots of the dress, the shoes etc. The love between the couple, and the love of their friends for them, is so apparent, so real. Of course, it’s not for everyone – not everyone would want their wedding captured in this way, but surely that’s what building a business is all about – finding clients that love your work and clients that you can gel with, care about, and ‘know’. And to this end, I think what Blush Photography have done here is perfect. I hope they get many, many more of these types of clients to work with in the future. I know that anyone that books them based on these images will be thrilled with the results, if the above is anything to go by.

  27. Each to their own. I can’t get past the fact that some of these images look very staged which then leads me to believe that every shot is staged. No matter how in love they look, how well they look like they are in love, it just doesn’t feel real.

I prefer more natural photography, where you capture those fleeting glances, the tears rolling down the eyes, the smiles, the laughter, the genuine emotions. I see non of that here. i have looked at the images several times now

As above, it’s just my opinion and thoughts. I am not saying that they are not great pictures in terms of photography tho and the skill involved in getting those natural looking poses which is to do with the couple as well as the photographer.

  28. Jasmine

OMG OMG OMG I lovvveee this. so naturally beautiful. I’m so in love with the photography.. ooh the video.. and the couple is just so puurrfect.

IDS — you really need to chill. If it takes 5 giant comments to get your point across, and to try to convince the thousands of people that love it, then it’s not worth it. Obviously you opinion is one in a million — The only reason you say it doesn’t feel real is because you know it was a styled shoot. Is a styled shoot not full of real emotion? Do you know the couple? do you know their love? do you know anything about them? you can’t be a judge on their love or this shoot at all because you know nothing about the couple, their love, and this experience they had together on this shoot. They are a real in love couple, like it says.

One comment of your opinion is enough. Thanks for your opinion and please be mature and don’t keep filling up this post with how much you ‘don’t feel it’s real’ — we’d all appreciate it. Because I know the rest of us love it. Go find something you love instead of dwelling on your opinion.

EXCELLENT WORK BROOKE AND CHRIS! I’m now your new #1 fan :)
