I have to be honest, I usually delete the random ‘oooh look at this darling!’ emails I get sporadically from my Mother. But these vintage advertisements did make me chuckle (and made me hella grateful that I was born in the 80′s and not the 40′s! Talk about produced to give you a complex.
You wouldn’t have wanted to be a slightly overweight, smoking housewife back then would you?
Thanks for the laughs Mum!

Haha this is so funny! You can’t believe the things they used to say. “That’s what wife’s are for” if anyone tried to say something like that now, they’d get an earful and a half!
*pisses self* – seen these before, but they’ll never not make me chuckle! “Blow in her face”…bwahahaha!!!
Too Funny!!!
The last one is my favourite!!!
Brilliant and awful at the same time. I love that there was a pattern called ‘chubbies’.
i’ve actually held a 1940′s magazine that had the “more doctors smoke camels” ad on the back–never not funny.
Love ‘em! So bloody glad times have changed! I would so pissed off if I got a Hoover for Christmas!
Love it! how funny, hasn’t life changed. I think we should bring back ad’s like these, who want’s to be Politically correct, there’s no fun in that!
I think its very normal…
Wonderful advertisements. Maybe we should follow them…….NOT!
OMG – seriously funny
Love it! I can just imagine Don Draper dreaming all these up at stirling cooper!
Outside the York city walls near Monkgate is an old hand painted advert covering the entire side of a house that says, in a jaunty font, “Bile beans keep you healthy, bright-eyed and slim!”
I hope it’s still there. It was in 98 last time I was there…
Yay! Here it is!

The harder i work the sweatier and redder I look! So perhaps I need the vitamins! Those are great, now I want all those products so I can be a gun toting, coke popping, cake mixing, house cleaning super wife….. Or I might play on my iPad instead x
THESE ARE HILARIOUS, I WONDER HOW WE’LL LOOK AT TODAY’S ADS IN 40 YEARS….
Genius – just what I need to raise a smile on a Sunday morning!
Amazing favourite has to be ” Blow in her face!!!!!! Brilliant!! Thanks Kat proper belly laughing!! X
The fashion ad is particularly annoying, particularly considering how much sizes have changed since even the 1960s. For example today’s standard size 8 was a size 14 in the 60s.
I LOVE the last one
)
Hey, that last one is sound advice.
I love these ads, I always wonder if they actually worked ? The last one is pretty cool but the rest I do wonder if anyone would fall for them ? So anyone taking up the housework workout ?
