When this photo shoot landed in my inbox this week with the description “Barbie & Ken’s wedding” I thought oh christ…what’s this?! However I’ve got to say that as soon as I saw the photographs my initial scepticism and preconceptions were totally eradicated. I laughed as I looked at each photo, set up to show Barbie & Ken getting married and photographed in the way an actual wedding might be. The quality of the photos is totally brilliant – and there lies the hilarity.
French photographer Béatrice de Guigné has set up each shot and photographed it like it would be with a real life couple. There are certain photo set-ups that you see all over wedding photography (the shoe shot, the dress shot, the bridal portraits just after she’s got ready, the groom getting ready with his boys etc…) and the whole set just made me laugh!
Maybe I’m going a bit mental from looking at so many wedding photographs every day!? This may well be funnier to wedding photographers and bloggers who do look at weddings all day long (the ‘portraits’ are particularly accurate!) but I hope you all get a little chuckle out of these!
“Barbie & Ken were married at Faraway Castle, in Plasticity,” photographer Béatrice told me. “The bride bought her dress from The Fairy Godmother shop and her shoes from the Cinderella Store. The groom wore a suit from The Prince Charming Emporium. The couple met more than 50 years ago (yes I know they look young). Barbie was tired of waiting so she asked Ken to get married.”
I did however want to ask Béatrice a semi-serious question to see where she got her idea for this ‘shoot’ from. “I don’t know why I wanted to do this but I did!” she told me. “Everything started last year when one day I wanted to make some boudoir shots I had in my mind, but nobody to pose for me except Barbie. So I photographed her and published the photos on my blog. Everybody laughed about it and found it was a nice idea. After that, everytime I wanted to test some ideas, I took Barbie as my model.”
“One day she said to me ‘Hey Béatrice, now that I have my boudoir, can you be my wedding photographer?’ LOL. So I started this crazy adventure! More seriously it was weeks and weeks of preparation, 3 days to shoot everything, a lot of sweat and finally a wedding day! I’m laughing alone looking these photos, so I hope it’s the same for people looking at them! Or I think I’m totally crazy!”
Well I’m laughing with you lady. I love them! Pretty genius I say.
What does everyone else think?
Thanks so much for sharing these Béatrice!

Makes me ponder buying some Barbies just to practice shoots on them too! And for the utter hilarity of what my husband would think if he came home to me photographing Barbies in my studio! This is great, thanks for sharing!
Well it’s about time they made it official… And now they have the wedding photos to prove it!

Awesome, hilarious and brilliant! kudos to Beatrice!
These are great. What a brilliant idea!
Aww this is super cute but the bit about the typical wedding pictures is so true. I could totally see these pictures on any wedding photography blog only with real people.
This is absolutely adorable! I too had to remind myself that it wasn’t real people. They look really accurate! Anyways, it’s about time Barbie! Women young and old have waited patiently for this marriage
I love your idea
it’s very creative and the result looks amazing!
This is so creative and well done. Thanks for sharing this!
You’re adorable.
Absolutely genius and hilarious
A year later and this is still one of the best photographed weddings around, most creative and funniest!! All of the detail is amazing!!
Oh my God!!! This is so so pretty!!! I’m loving your blog
I thought it was fun to look at Barbie & Ken’s wedding photos. Since my daughter is an event/wedding planner I look at a lot of wedding photos too. You’re right about the common shots. How fun. Glad they finally tied the knot!
this is so cute!!!!
Are you going to do a courtroom for their divorce? All of the couples I know of who waited decades to get married usually divorced after 2 or 3 years. And since they took 50 years to get married you know someone was dragging their feet! LOL
Very talented and imaginative individual. You’ve made many people smile.
PS I had one of the ORIGINAL Barbie Dolls, the ones with the black and white suit and the hair that was similar to embroidery floss. Had it for years then realizing my 2 little boys wouldn’t want it gave it to a niece. About three weeks later I found out how much money they were worth! AGGGGG!
I like how in the pic where their kissing barbie is coping a feel to cool
This is so awesome!!! The pics look so real, and totally on point!!! You did an awesome Job with this shoot!! It’s about time Barbie n Ken got hitched, it’s been a minute!
