Emil & Tarryn’s Red, Black & White, Alice Inspired Trash the Dress

Emil & Tarryn threw the styling for their South African trash the dress shoot together themselves. They wore their wedding outfits but wanted to funk them up a bit for this laid back session.

“My husband and I are both students and so we had to wing our outfits for the trash the dress session.” the bride told me. “It was actually very fun to walk around gathering ideas from costume shops and low budget chain stores. Our main venue for the shoot was red, black  and white, so these become our colours of choice. We wanted to bring in more way-out colours and used the apple red and apple green sunglasses which were repeated in the two different apples found on some of the photos. My wedding dress is your typical fairy princess dress – and our wedding photos move along that theme. Emil and I like diversity, so we decided to do something a little bit different for the photo session.”

“I found the little red hat in a evening dress shop and it struck a chord: it reminded me of Alice in Wonderland whose style is the perfect alter ego to my dress. Love the fact that Alice is not your average heroine: she’s nosy and a bit imperious (in the original story), but brave and confused (in the Johnny Depp version). In both versions, she’s just different: that’s all :). Again, just perfect for our ‘diverse’ shoot concept. A friend of mine, who dabbles in fashion design, helped with further embellishments to the hat (like the veil).  Both Emil and my TTD shoes are super ugly, but  in the same breath, funny. They also brought the red colour down the length of the body to balance the overall picture.”

“My husband’s wedding suit was a similar case to my wedding dress. It was a lovely suit, but we thought it a bit too formal for our trash the dress session. So, we chose a basic ‘background’ (white billowy shirt and black pants) and started searching for our different elements. We were clothes shopping one day when we came across the hat he wore; thought it was very debonair and that was that. The suspenders, like the shoes, brought in the red and a bit of funkiness.”

“Finally, Emil is very fond of his Vespa and insisted (from before we were married) that it be part of the TTD shoot. It has now become a future family relic!”

Light-hearted & Personal

I love  a quirky London wedding just as much as the next person so I whooped with joy when Connie & Jonny’s was send my way. “We wanted to bring all our friends and family together for a massive party to celebrate us getting hitched” the bride began. “We kept certain traditions – getting everyone to sit down and have a big feed, and speeches etc, but we weren’t keen on all the flowery formal bits, so to keep things lighthearted and personal we had the lovely ukelele band.  We put our friends and family on a routemaster bus back to the reception (at Lena Restaurant)  Amazing food, great party space downstairs with loads of champagne.  A friend drove my dad and I to the town hall in his VW camper van, and took Jonny and I (with music booming, a healthy supply of champagne) back to the reception (we drove back via regent’s park and stopped off in the sunshine to take it all in). Not really up for flowery delicate invites, we got Hanway print centre to print us some bright orange postcards. Jonny’s dad made the wedding cake and my mom and friends organised the flowers.”

Sweetpea

The very gorgeous engagement session of the equally gorgeous Abby & Erik was just sent over by their photographer friend Mary Wyar. She had the pleasure of hanging out the back of her car to get the ‘riding the scooter’ shots as well as the much less strenuous task of shooting the pierced and tattooed couple having a Rock n Roll picnic (complete with pink flamingos of course) and hanging out with their dog, Sweetpea.

Hawaiian Kitsch

Erica & Simon had a Hawaii wedding fit to bursting with gorgeousness. Erica’s stunning dress was flown all the way from England (woohoo) for the event and was custom made for her by her sister-in-law. The couple had a tiki bar, a vintage Vespa, uber cute cupcakes and their bridesmaids all in different candy coloured dresses, all with added to their Hawaii kitsch theme!

Local Talent

This is something a little different for me to post but when I saw Rosie Parsons‘ last few ‘detail shoots’ I fell in love! The Bristol – based photographer has a great relationship with some fantastic local vendors, from Clara Bows who rents and sells gorgeous vintage crockery, to local florists Bella & Fifi with whom Rosie spend the day dashing around the city delivering blooms in an adorable eco-chic piaggio. Finally I had to share some photographs from Gilly Woo, a good friend of Rosies’ 30th birthday a few weeks ago. The birthday girl is also a ridiculously talented dress maker and so not only are the images pretty damn stunning but how retro chic gorgeous is the her sparkly gold vintage glam dress?
