An Extreme DIY Colour-Fest Wedding

Rebecca and Will wanted to suffuse their whole wedding day with rich colours to create a feast for the senses! The three main colours they chose were rich orange, ultramarine blue and a bright claret. They decided on a church wedding ceremony and their reception has held at Will’s childhood home.

“We know everyone says this, but we wanted our wedding style to reflect us,” began Rebecca. “I think we both knew it was always going to be quite theatrical and sumptuous as we both perform in concert and opera. Food, colour and music were our theme! So long as all three elements were vibrant and the best quality we could manage, we knew we’d be happy.”

As Rebecca wore a blue wedding dress, her ‘something blue’ was herself! “I was never a fan of white and as a singer, I wanted any wedding dress to be able to be used for recitals after the wedding. We found the silk, which is shot with two shades of blue, in India. I then found a local tailor to make it up in a 1950s pattern that I’d found on eBay. My dress actually ripped 10 minutes before I was due at church! Luckily we had a needle and thread and the tear was minor, but at the time it felt like the world was going to implode. I also felt so awful leaving Will hanging at the altar…Even though it was only for 15 minutes!”

DIY Theatre Wedding: Amanda & T’Neil

It wasn’t love at first sight for Amanda & T’Neil, but their romance is certainly what epic love stories are made of. Now call me an old sop, but what a great movie their story would make!

“T’Neil and I met through our parents in our mid teens,” began Amanda. “It was one of those friendships you had because your parents ‘encouraged’ it. The two of us could not have been more different if we tried to be – she was miss pep and I was miss ‘leave me the heck alone’. I wanted to set her pom poms on fire and she says she was scared to death I was gonna beat her up or something! Through the first year that we were ‘encouraged’ to be friends it was a lot of small talk and ‘my dad said to ask you if you wanna hang out’ invites – movies, the mall, game nights.”

“Then we began to see that we weren’t so different after all; we had more in common than we wanted to admit even to ourselves. What was once an ‘encouraged’ friendship became inside jokes, sleep overs, and overnight texting. We look back now after 7 years of the best friendship and we can’t say what was the moment it all changed, but somewhere over the years of helping each other through a move across states, the sickness and death of a parent and divorce of others, heartbreaks, injuries and so much more, we became inseparable. And eventually best friendship turned into a ‘once in a lifetime’, movie script type of love, with all the tests of A Lot Like Love, hope of A Walk to Remember and love of The Notebook.”

A Broadway Musical Wedding: Carin & Pouya

When Carin & Pouya got engaged, the bride instantly knew what their wedding theme would be – Broadway musical! “I have always loved Broadway musicals and three years ago Pouya took me to my first live production – The Wizard of Oz”, Carin writes. “I was instantly hooked! Since then I’ve got season tickets to Broadway performances across Canada including our hometown of Edmonton. I never thought of incorporating that into the wedding, but after a while the Broadway musical theme came to me while I was bored one day in a class in University. I was looking around on the internet when I saw a wedding program that looked like a playbill and the ideas spiraled from there!”

The ceremony was held in Hastings Lake Gardens and the reception was at Fort Edmonton Park. This venue was an old aeroplane hanger which provided the perfect blank canvas – and plenty of space for their party. Guests were greeted by a red carpet and ‘paparazzi’ as they entered, and given tickets to the ‘show’. From the ticket booth to the cake, and Rocky Horror Bar to the Daddy Warbucks dessert table, every element of the decor was in-keeping with the theme. Each table was styled differently, each inspired by a different Broadway musical, including My Fair Lady, The Wizard of Oz, Grease, Legally Blonde, Wicked, The Lion King, Mary Poppins and Mamma Mia. Which is your favourite?!
