Behind the Scenes – Preparation for my Catwalk Debut at Luella’s Boudoir Wedding Fair

As many of you now know, on Monday I’ll be walking down the catwalk at The Luella’s Boudoir Wedding Fair. This week I was invited by Darren Fowler, Creative Director of the fabulous salon Clipso London to come meet him for a hair trial, and by the equally delightful Rachel Atwell, owner of Luella’s Boudoir, for a dress fitting (well actually for 5 dress fittings…I found out I’m wearing 5 different outfits, talk about throwing me in at the deep end…)

So on Wednesday, I got my little pink haired self on an early train to the city for a day of preening, pampering and for a little bit of freaking the hell out.

At Clipso I was greeted by smiling faces who were eager to talk to be about Rock n Roll Bride and ease me into this whole ‘catwalk modelling’ thing. Darren and his team have worked on London Fashion Week for the past decade and so are well versed in dealing with catwalk models…and now me! We went through some cool and pretty out-there ideas for my barnet and I’m very excited about the plans! The even invited me back the next day to get my roots done and my hair made even more electric pink in colour (always a good thing!)

I tweeted a picture of the final result…isn’t it an awesome colour?

After a few hours at the salon I headed to the Luella’s Boudoir store in Wimbledon. Rachel and her team have just moved to a new premises on Wimbledon Village High Street so it was really nice to be one of the first people to see the new shop! When I arrived I met Benedicte Lassartesse-Jones of The Real Princess Company who had made me some amazing pieces to wear in my hair. How cool is that bow and pouffy veil? I can’t wait to rock them!

I then spent some time with stylist Kate, who took me through a number of their dresses – some of which I’d seen before at The Big Fat Wedding Blogger’s Photo Shoot – but some of which were brand new. Remember I mentioned last week that I was going to wear a gown by Australian designer Johanna Johnson? Well wow is all I can say! Can I keep it please?

It was a long day…but a fun one none the less! Special thanks has to go to photographer Penny McKinley-Rodgers who came along for the ride and who took some photographs for me to blog. Fab aren’t they?

I’m even more nervous about Monday now actually…nervous but excited!

Tickets for The Luella’s Boudoir Wedding Fair are still available. If you’d like to come check out the exhibitors, have a few cheeky cocktails and see me sauntering down the catwalk (I’m only there on the Monday) then you can purchase tickets (just £12 or £18 for 2) by emailing info@luellasboudoir.co.uk or calling 020 8879 7744.

More photos after the ‘jump…’ check ’em out!

Kat & Gareth’s “Beloved” Session with Marianne Taylor

It seems like forever ago now, but last year my friend Marianne Taylor sent me an email to let me know about an amazing and life-changing workshop she’d just completed. Hosted by Canadian photographer Jesh de Rox, the Life {as an artform} workshop had taught her some new techniques that she was desperate to try out and she asked if Gareth & I would model for her. This workshop wasn’t a technical or a ‘how to run your business’ one. It didn’t teach her a new technique with her camera or show her how to be a more successful photographer…it taught her how to use emotional exercises in order to bring the couple together, in the moment, and into a state where they are not afraid to show their true selves and explore the connection they have.

This was to be a completely different style of photo shoot than I’m used to – no make up artist, no hair stylist, no props (well, except for some cake pops – it was hard work and we needed a snack!)…just me + Gareth and our love and emotions laid bare.

Marianne explains, “Since Kat & Gareth have been together for nine years, of which they’ve been married for 3, they were the perfect couple to explore the Beloved experience with. Beloved sessions consist of different exercises, or invites, which have a way of bringing the couple into the present moment and into a state where they are not afraid to show their true selves and explore the connection they have. I’ve used some of the more physical invites in my engagement sessions to break the ice, but this was the first session where it was 99% Beloved techniques as opposed to traditional posing, so it definitely felt like a big step.”

Instead of posing us, Marianne took us through a variety of exercises and asked us to call upon certain emotions in order to interact naturally with each other as she photographed. We actually got into it quite easily really threw ourselves wholeheartedly into simply feeling. Some of the the exercises were sad, some funny and others were tender and loving. A few tears were shed, but I really do think that because of this our emotions come though in a really genuine way.

It was like nothing I’ve ever been a part of before. It was actually really nice to not have to worry about ‘posing’ or thinking “ooh does my nose/chin/arm look weird in this?” and simply focusing on Gareth completely. Even now, looking back at these beautiful and genuine images, I’m ignoring my initial thoughts self deprecation and just remembering the affection for my husband that I was feeling at the time.

These are the photographs we’ll be showing our Grandchildren. It’s kind of magical really.

Words can’t express how grateful I am to Marianne for asking Gareth & I to experience this wonderful day with her. We have always been a bit of a lovey-dovey couple anyway, but since the shoot (and this sounds totally cheesy but I don’t care) I do actually feel like I’ve fallen in love with him all over again. I literally can’t recommend the experience enough, and for an anniversary shoot doing something like this would be perfection.

I really hope you enjoy these photos…be sure to check out the slideshow (turn your speakers on) and Marianne’s blog post for a few extra photos.

RIP Photography Friday

I bought this from Urban Outfitters while in Brighton last week. Gareth hates him bit I think he absolutely rules! Photo taken with my phone…

I have an admission to make…I SUCK at Photography Friday. Like seriously suck. I’ve had a few people ask me about the lack of these posts recently so I though I’d bite the bullet and admit my rubbishness in public.

I let these posts slip a little at the begining of the year and now I’ve realised it’s been 6 weeks since I posted anything! I love my Canon and it’s really handy to have when I need to take product shots and the like… but let’s be honest, a) I’m no pro photographer – hence I keep getting frustrated that my photos are poo and b) my life really isn’t that exciting and I actually don’t know what to take photos of!

While I’d love to take gorgeous and fun personal photos like Gala Darling, Audrey Kitching or Elsie Cake – I pretty much spend my days in a baggy jumper + leggings combo, accessoried with unwashed hair, glasses, no make up and slippers…and I sit in front of my computer writing and working my little ass off…in a slightly messy/half decorated house. Sexy huh? No one wants to see photos of THAT!

Rock n Roll Bride TV – Episode Two ~ Rainbow Mermaid Hair & My Top 10 Blogging Tips

Thanks to Richard of FX Films for this super flattering image

Oh. My. GAWWD… Sorry I had to get that out of my system there!

I have literately just landed at home after hectic but fabulous couple of days in London. If you follow me on Twitter, then you’ll already know that yesterday was “The Big Fat Wedding Bloggers Photo Shoot” (the name started as a joke, and as a homage to my favourite wedding show everMy Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, but it’s kind of stuck!). You see, I was pondering my next shoot at the end of last year and I thought, wouldn’t it be great to get some of my blogging buddies involved too?

And it was.

It was flipping epic and amazing and everyone was beyond awesome.

Photography Credit: FX Films

Anyway enough random gushing! The results of the shoot will be hitting the blog in two weeks time (Monday 21st February – put it in your diaries!) as well as the full list of everyone involved. Don’t worry though, there will be a few sneaky peeks along the way to tease you. As I was all dolled up yesterday, I took the opportunity to film the next episode of Rock n Roll Bride TV (again, a name that started as a joke!)

In this episode I wanted to give you some of my top blogging tips. It is one of those subjects that I get questions about over and over so it made sense for me to start with it. As always, let me know what you think and if you have any subjects you’d like me to try and cover in these videos.

PS Do you like the new rainbow, mermaid hair?! I am in LOVE with it… It was created by the amazing Elbie Van Eeden.

The links I reference in the video are Problogger (.net not .com whoops!), Gala Darling’s Love and Sequins episode about blogging and Blog Love, an E-Course by A Beautiful Mess. Check them out!

Also, to come later this week, some exclusive and fabulous videos and images from the Mark Niemierko Valentine’s Party which I went to after the shoot. Thanks to everyone who organised it, it was great! Someone took a scary photo of me too! I’m like, “No Paparazzi!” Thanks sooo much for tweeting this Mark!

Sexy huh?

Believe in People

Yesterday was my last day as an employee.

After nearly 5 years service to the shopping TV industry I’ve left those studios for the last time. It was a bitter-sweet moment and I left in tears, so unbelievably sad to be leaving my friends. Yet I know making the scary move to running my wedding blog full time is the only way for me. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for me…for us.

My best friend sent me this card. It also made me cry.

“I just wanted to say I am uber proud of you and that I’m chuffed to bits. It doesn’t feel that long ago since we spend two long days standing in the cold, leafleting outside the National Wedding Show. Now there isn’t a person in the wedding world who doesn’t know about the gorgeous pink haired lady. You deserve every single bit of sucess, credit and love that has since come your way.”

TEARS Carly, you make me cry actual TEARS.

Happy Weekend & A Quick Round Up

I thought today might be a nice day to share some of my favourite all time posts and pages on the blog. These are the ones I always go back to and the ones that new comments always come through on even though they were published months ago. Happy browsing!

Yep down a bit, waaay over there ——–>

Online Negativity and Comment Etiquette

Photography Credit: Paul Cahill & Jane Paskiewicz

One of my favourite things about being a wedding blogger is that I see so many different styles of weddings and so many unique and diverse ideas every day. From goth to vintage and from steampunk to modern –every wedding is different and every person behind that wedding is unique.  I am also lucky enough to sometimes meet the people behind these weddings (whether that’s brides or suppliers) and I consider many of them to now be friends.

The simple fact is that you are not going to like everything you see on my blog. You are not going to agree with everything I say or everything I post on these pages, but that’s OK. In fact that’s what makes Rock n Roll Bride so ace and so different to most of the other wedding blogs out there. I don’t only publish the pretty or the popular and not everything will be for everyone.

Some wedding will be budget and some will be extravagant and expensive. A wedding costing more than average doesn’t make it any less Rock n Roll. People’s financial situations are different and just as most of you would never dream to criticise someone for only spending £2000 on their wedding; similarly you shouldn’t criticise someone for spending what you see as excessive. At the end of the day IT IS THEIR WEDDING and they are allowed to spend whatever they damn well please.

Photography Credit: ümit gündüz

Another lesson I’ve learnt through running this business is that everyone you see featured on these pages is a real person, with real insecurities and real feelings. That might sound like a strange thing to say (of course they are a real person) but sometimes, just sometimes, it’s oh too easy to see someone online and forget that behind that computer screen is a human being, with emotions and feeling that can be hurt.

Rock n Roll Bride TV – Episode One ~ New Year, New Goals

It’s that time of year again where we all start to think about how we will make the next 365 better than the last. I don’t like new year’s resolutions myself. Resolutions are things like giving up chocolate or going to the gym three times a week and are easy to break…in fact do you know anyone who is still following theirs by the time Christmas rolls around? Nope. Me neither. That’s why I don’t do them.

However the start of a new year is a good time to re-group, to re-asses your situation and to set yourself some tangible goals. So here’s one of mine, It’s pretty self explanatory really…

Now I’m not exactly sure how this brilliant new idea of mine will progress but I literally just wanted to get over the hurdle of actually being on, and talking to camera today. I’ve been surrounded by TV presenters for 5 years in my (soon to be ex) job as a producer but actually being on camera is a whole different ball game. It’s weird and awkward and I’m well nervous about posting it but it’s something I want/need to get better at in 2011.

I’m super self concious about how I look, how I kept fidgeting (You don’t want to know how many takes I had to do before I forced myself to stop playing with my hair as much!) and that fact that it’s very raw…and well, the real me. There’s no photo shop action to save me on this one and literally what you see if what you get. You can’t hide anything about yourself when you’re on video and that’s why I’m so terrified…eek!

My ‘performance’ certainly isn’t perfect  (hell, I’m not a TV presenter!) and I keep cringing at new things every time I watch it back. However I’m biting the bullet and posting it, with the realisation in my mind that this is only the first video in the series so I can hopefully only get better (woohoo!) I do hope you’ll stick with me to see how that goes!

(Having trouble viewing? Watch on You Tube here)

Finally HUGE love, thanks and credit has to go to the wonderful Richard of FX Films who came to rescue me in my hour of need. My mini freak out(s) over how I looked on camera/what my voice sounded like/getting the words out (and in the right order)/what you would all think of this idea were all alleviated when he came to help me film this. So yeah, big love and adoration for this man for putting up with my diva demands and for making me feel (slightly more) comfortable in front of the lens.

So, thoughts please (and please do send me some questions so I’ve got something to talk about in the next vid)

ps tickets for the Designer Wedding Show are available to buy online here and tickets for the Designer Vintage Bridal Show (which are actually only £8 if you buy them in advance – my bad) are available to buy here.

Happy New Year!

Photography Credit: Made u Look Photography (I couldn’t help but sneak peek this epic wedding I was sent just this morning. Remember their engagement session? OMG their wedding is even better!)

Happieee new year! I trust you all had a suitably fabulous NYE celebration whatever you were up to? Me? Yeah…I was working at the shopping channel until 2am (Rock n Roll!) but at least I haven’t woken this morning with a stinking hangover…small mercies hey?! The good news is that it was the last New Year’s I will ever have to work for someone else because I am going to be a full time wedding blogger so soon (I can smell it!) NYE 2011 is gonna go off the hook yo!

The blogging schedule will return to normal on Monday, but I just wanted to drop by today for some obligatory happy new year’s love. Next week I’ll even been doing something on the blog that I’m very scared about too, I’m going into 2011 full throttle…eeek.

Stand by people, stand by!

Rock n Roll Bride in Company Magazine

I’m closing 2010 with some good news. Last month I was contacted by Company Magazine for some unusual hen (bachelorette) ideas for an article they were writing on the subject. I was more than happy to wax lyrical about getting some fab hen night photos and to recommned some of my favourite photographers who can do so (they are listed in the article so go and pick yourself up a copy, although if you are interested in the idea be sure to ask your photographer – many of them may have never thought of offering the service before but would love to take some snaps of you and your girls!)

The magazine is out right now!

ps trying to take photographs of a magazine with two intrigued maine coons is no mean feat let me tell you…

I hope you all have a fabulous NYE whatever you’re up to and I’ll see you all in 2011. WaaaaHoooooooooo!

2010 – The Year that Was {Part Two}

My plan was to have my top 5 posts from each month in this list, however after going through the archives I realised there was some stuff I simply couldn’t leave out…so I broke my own rule and added in some extras. Seriously, if you’re bored during this weird Crimbo Limbo week (what is it with the week between Christmas and new year? Time just seems to sloooow down) then go check out August – October’s blog posts in particular. There is so many awesome weddings over there (if I do say so myself.)

July to December all up in your area…

July

A Sunday Kind of Love – Unveiled

In July I was asked to speak at Unveiled – a conference for photographers – all about blogging, social media and doing things ‘differently’ in business. To say I was terrified is an understatement. I’d never done public speaking before and I was scared! However everyone there was super lovely and interested in what I had to say – plus I made some new friends while I was there! Bonus.

Mad Hatter Rock n Roll Bride ~ Candy Floss, Beach Huts & The Great British Seaside

For my summer photo shoot I enlisted the help of some girlfriends and we headed to Whitstable beach for a day of frolicking in the sun! The shoot was even published in Photo Pro Magazine – the power of working together and networking huh?! (pictured above)

Roll Up, Roll Up for Vishaka & Dean’s Incredible Circus-Inspired Wedding!

Vishaka & Dean had a fabulously styled circus wedding. The decor and detail ideas really made this day stand out.

The MOST INCREDIBLE Alice in Wonderland Wedding Ever. FACT.

The title speaks for itself on this one. Alice weddings went mental this year and this one was my favourite of them all.

“I Can Make That!” – Roni & Dave’s Awesome, Diy, Homespun Cute-Fest Wedding

The power of DIY! Do it yourself weddings are more common place than ever, however Roni & Dave’s homespun, homemade wedding was one of the most beautiful.

How to… Get the Best from your Wedding Photographer

Photographer David McNeil popped by to give you all some tips on how to get the very best wedding photographs out there.

What Exactly IS a Rock n Roll Wedding?

I often get asked how I choose the weddings to publish on Rock n Roll Bride. I have always stood by the fact that being a Rock n Roll Bride is not about having the most alternative or out-there wedding in the world. It’s about planning a wedding that is a reflection of you and your partner and not what the wedding industry tells you to! In this post I explained my ideas a little further.

An Alexander McQueen Inspiration

This utterly stunning Mormon, South African wedding blew me away. (pictured above)

A Cotton Candy Sweet, Truly Scrumptious Brighton Wedding

Ant & Clare’s sugary sweet Brighton elopement made my heart a-flutter…and Clare’s  customised vintage dress and DIY shoes were like no other!

Rock n Roll Hearts & Paper Cranes – Lauren & JP’s Perfectly Rockin’ Wedding

Lauren & Jp’s wedding and wedding video caused a bit on controversy over on her own blog (seriously, have people got nothing better to do?)  but their wedding was certainly one of my favourites of the year.

Rock n Roll Party Report

The first of many! I’ve organised industry get together’s in the past but this party was noting short of epic! So popular was my little meet in fact that I had to start turning people away because the venue wasn’t big enough! Over 100 of you turned up to eat cupcakes, drink cocktails and mingle with the Rock n Roll glitterati…and yes there will be another next year…with a bigger venue!

How to…Have a Perfectly Imperfect Wedding/Life

One of my favourite and most honest personal posts of the year. Sick of feeling like a failure as a person because my life didn’t reflect the lives I saw of others online, I wanted to lay my heart of the line and share my feeling with you. I was more than thrilled with the response from you lot, a the fact that I’m actually not alone in feeling like this!

September

Have a Wedding that is Perfect for YOU – Greg & Michelle’s Low Key, Homespun & Family-Focused Wedding

Greg & Michelle had their reception at Greg’s Grandmother’s house. There was no sit down meal, no dancing, no cake cutting…but it was perfect for them. THAT is what makes them one of my Rock n Roll weddings of the year.

Kaori & Alex’s Multi-Cultural, DIY-Fabulous, Vintage Bohemian Wedding

Incredible fashion, style and awesome tattoos made Kaori & Alex’s wedding an absolute joy to publish. (pictured above)

We got married after spending just 12 days with each other…”

An inspiring story of love at first sight and an awesome Vegas wedding.

A Kitschy, Quirky, Vintage Wedding

Vintage weddings were everywhere in 2010, but Lindsey & Adriano’s was the best of the bunch.

Yes, You CAN have a Rock n Roll Wedding!”

A guest post written by The Bowie Bride addressing the issue, “Will my wedding be Rock n Roll enough?” Simple answer – YES!

2010 – The Year that Was {Part One}

In the last 12 months I have published 858 posts on Rock n Roll Bride…that’s a lot of weddings, a lot of photo shoots and a lot of personal rambles! As is customary at this time of year, I wanted to take the time reflect on the past 365 days by sharing some of my all time favourite blog posts. So here’s part 1, January to June. Be sure to stop by tomorrow for part 2!

January

How to…Plan a Wedding in No Time at all

At the beginning of the year I launched my ‘How to…’ series, where I aimed to impart some of my (ahem) wedding and blogging wisdom where I could. In this first installment I wanted to help a reader plan her wedding as in just a few months.

A Most Curious Party

One of my favourite weddings of the year belonged to Rebecca & John, who had a quintessentially British wedding with lots of fabulous quirky twists, Rebecca enjoyed planning her wedding so much that she set up her own vintage wedding styling company, aptly named A Most Curious Party, soon after.

Fairy Lights, Scrabble & English Heritage

Ella & Sam’s London wedding was one of enviable vintage glamour and sophistication. It was an honour sharing such gorgeousness on these pages.

Rock n Roll Bride ♥ Vintage Boudoir

My first photo shoot of the year was with photographic legend Julia Boggio. Not only was this shoot super fun (even braving the snow to get there and back!) but doing it put me in touch with some fabulous industry peeps that I’ve worked with since…and have plans to work with again very soon! Watch this space… (pictured above)

How to…Deal with Uncooperative Relatives

Planning a wedding can be stressful at the best of times, but what should you do if your relatives disapprove of your wedding choices? I tried to help Allison out with just this dilemma.

February

So Punk Rock it HURTS!

I loved Matt & Danielle’s wedding so much that I blogged it in two parts. Their tattoos and their awesome style really did make for one of my most memorable weddings of the year. (pictured above)

Latex, Tattoos, Piercings & Fancy Dress Make a FABULOUS UK Wedding!

Ever seen a bride wearing a latex wedding dress? Well I have and it was utterly fabulous!

Modern Marie Antoinette

Simone’s incredible Monique Lhuillier dress and Christian Louboutin shoes gave me some serious bride-style envy.

I Love…

I wanted to share some love for Valentine’s day with some personal pictures.

Woodland Nymphs

Samuel & Jessica’s Midsummer Night’s Dream wedding not only graced the pages of Rock n Roll Bride, but was featured on a WEtv reality show called “Girl Meets Dress.” Their emotionally charged ceremony made my heart melt.

March

Edward Scissorhands ‘Winter in Summer’ Wedding

Karri & Ian’s glam goth Scissorhand’s inspired wedding certainly made an impact, and their ‘winter in summer’ theme was totally dramatic and gorgeous!

Perfect Picnic Wedding

Sarah & Kevin didn’t have a huge budget, so chose to get married in front of a few close friends in one of their back garden’s, followed by a casual picnic reception.

Classic Vintage with a Twist of Awesome

Elodie & Greg’s Australian wedding was everything I adore in weddings – close, personal, quirky and beautiful. This rockstar couple really knew how to wed in style. (pictured above)

Rock n Roll Bride in the Daily Express!

One of my proudest moments of the year! My first big newspaper feature. To say I was a little bit excited to get the call about this is an understatement of epic proportions!

I Love Rock n Roll (Bride) – The Movie!

Richard from FX Films asked if he could make a little film about me. Now, while my day to day life is anything but glamorous (does spending 18 hours in front of a computer sound glam to you!?) I was more than excited to be involved…and to introduce him to Henry & Rachel of course!

{Personal Posting} New Handbag Eye Candy

I couldn’t resist adding a little bonus personal post this morning…because look what I just became the proud owner of! I think every girl needs a Vivienne Westwood handbag for Christmas. My wonderful friend Peter bought it for me (yeah, I opened it early, whoops) I must have been a very good girl this year!

Gareth said it’s hideous and that I’m a big loser for asking him to take photos of me flashing it. However I think it suits my hair quite perfectly and that anyone who thought I was strange as I posed in front of the random Christmas shed is clearly just jealous of my fabulous new bag.

Happy Christmas to me. Thank you to Peter and Vivienne. I love you both!
