“Just another hot and windy Sunday afternoon in Tracy, CA” began photographer Nirav. “Showing Matt & Lynnae’s love for each other meant that they had to feel extremely comfortable in their location and with me so I decided to start the session at a place that they had spent a lot of time together and had lots of character which was Matt’s mother’s home/farm. The home included stables, a farm house, and several critters of all sorts. We took several shots there and once things felt right we moved out to the hills of Tracy with the intention of shooting with the giant windmills in the background. When we got, the security patrol was there to make sure those shots were not going to happen. The amount of wind up on hill was tremendous and I loved the movement of hair so we took the remainder of the shots there with a very simple backdrop. My favorite shots are ones that play on light and shadows. I wanted at least one dramatic silhouette shot which is when I spotted the power lines. After that, we all headed back to house and passed out from heat exhaustion.”
“Wind, hair, rock and roll…mixed in with a little luuuv. That’s what this shoot was all about. Matt and Lynnae are a fun, charismatic, dynamic, and beautiful couple. Matt and I go back to high school. We also share the same love for playing and recording music. Oh how I miss our jam sessions where we played everything from Tool, Rage Against the Machine (minus the ridiculous Tom Morello solos) and of course Alice in Chains. Now we both listen to Hanson…MMMbop. Lynnae is nothing less than the absolute coolest person on the planet. She knows how to rock out and have a good time. There is never a dull moment when we are hanging out. These two are a match made in guitar center. I just love it.”
I featured Ali & Dean’s London engagement sesh a while back, and even then I knew their wedding would be totally Rock n Roll. Both of them are in bands and so music was a huge part of their day. The bride walked down the aisle to ‘November Rain’ and their tables were all named after their favourite bands. The day even finished with the pair playing a ‘first set’ on stage to all their guests instead of having a first dance.
Personal and unique touches were added throughout to give the day a perfectly ‘them’ vibe including using their own VW camper van as transport, the profiterole topped cheesecake instead of a traditional cake and the Groom’s 1960’s vintage suit.
Kate & Mike’s London punk wedding took place a few weeks before the couple moved to LA (Jealous!) so it had a distinctly punk rock vs Americana theme. The couple booked Celine Chaplin to take some portraits and to document their fun-filled reception.
Kate told me all about their day – including a very funny story about Mike’s wedding day hair cut! “Since we were moving to Los Angeles a couple of weeks after the wedding, Mike & I were totally hectic so we really needed some help with the wedding. My sister and my Mum were amazing at putting the wedding together. My Dad even chipped in and sorted the meal out! i’m a total control freak but on this occasion, I’m glad i let someone else take over because they did such an awesome job.”
“Mike has always been known for his long hair, and ahead of the move to LA, he decided to cut it off for a change. He raised £700 for charity by doing it and everyone at the party chipped in and contributed to cut. Pre-emptive song to the big chop was ‘The Final Countdown!” Lucky he did it after the wedding and not before, as a haircut by about 25 people was pretty much all over the place- he had a small tufty ponytail on top of his head from where someone had missed a bit. great look!”
“Since Rock n Roll is really what brought us together in the first place, and neither of us are particularly conventional, it was important that the day reflected that. We had The Wildhearts and The Replacements playing as we took our vows. The day was totally perfect and couldn’t have been better.
After the party the pair hopped onto a rickshaw (“28 years in London and I’ve never taken one” said Kate) to a penthouse suite at The Soho Hotel. “Rolling up at the hotel in our wedding stuff and clutching a cardboard cutout of mickey mouse, about to check into the penthouse was brilliant!” Kate laughed.
Ali & Dean are pure rock! Both in bands, the couple are getting married (in what’s sure to be a super stylish Rock (n Roll) wedding really soon and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
You might remember these two from their ‘Coney Island Cool’ engagement session. Well as suspected, their wedding was just as amazing!
Jess & Bryan’s is my favourite kind of wedding. I love the fashion, I love the style, I love the amazing diy touches and the whole chilled out and creative vibe of the day. “We really wanted usto be present in everything that was a part of our day” the couple told me. “We tried to make, and do, as much as we could for our wedding. This meant enlisting the help of our talented and wonderful friends and family to make paper cupcake toppers, straw flags, escort cards, wooden signs and much, much more! We all got together the day before the wedding to set up the entire tent and yard and then relaxed with a night of BBQing and laughing.
For the few outside vendors we did hire, we made sure that we worked with amazingly talented people who obviously care deeply about their craft, like our photographer Lindsey and caterer Kim. Some of the more unique characteristics of our wedding include an outside secular ceremony performed by a former judge and environmental activist, handmade everything, jeans allowed, vegetarian pigs in a blanket, a cotton candy machine, tattoos, mini birthday cakes for special guests and a hand made vintage inspired wedding dress. The best compliments we’ve received about our wedding have been, ‘Best wedding yet!’ and ‘It was so you!’ ”
I flipping LOVE it!
Emma & Mattias’ urban & gritty engagement session in Hackney Wick (the East End of London) have inspired me no end. I not only love the rough ‘n ready, graffiti style shots (which are fast becoming a bit of a McNeil signature) but the wonderful heart shots send my heart a-flutter. I asked David how this images came about and he told me that as they were wondering down the street, looking for locations, they came across a warehouse where a Valentines night was being set up. They asked nicely if they would use their heart covered wall as a backdrop and the lovely people said yes. Aren’t the results fabulous?
Sarah & Jeremy’s cute engagement session made me swoon with it’s classic, retro (slightly) geeky and quirky nature. The record store location provided the perfect backdrop for the pair who love music and all things funky and cool.
Does this Groom remind anyone else of Russell Brand?!
