Intimate, Queer, Trans Wedding with Alternative Flair

Luna and Omari wanted to disrupt stereotypical wedding gender norms and make their October wedding day feel as queer, trans and authentic as possible, all while keeping their alternative flair. “We originally were planning a huge wedding but did not have enough money to do so,” Luna told us. “Being the ambitious people that we are, we decided to do a last-minute small wedding ceremony at Prospect Park and a few days before we booked a venue through Peerspace for a reception.”

Everything about their day was DIY and collaboration with their friends and family, from their florals to their reception food. “Everyone bought their own drinks and showed up dressed as their best selves.” The couple spent around $4,000 on their day, with their most expensive elements being their outfits.

Omari told us, “We were very fortunate to have my former tattoo shop where I was apprenticing at the time pay for all of the alcohol and food at the reception.”

A Simple & Natural Lake Treehouse Wedding

Amanda and Heather describe themselves as simple, down to earth folk. they both wanted to be at the beach or in a forest-like setting for their March wedding day – somewhere out of the city and away from the hustle and bustle of life. They found the perfect venue in Secrets on the Lake in Queensland, Australia, and based the rest of the day around there!

In terms of theme, again they wanted to keep things simple and be inspired by their surroundings, incorporating their favourite colour into their flowers, suits, table arrangement and sand ceremony.

Rustic, DIY Backyard Wedding

Shannon and Emma were supposed to be married in Hawaii, but when COVID scuppered their plans not once but twice, they decided to change tact and organised a backyard DIY wedding instead. Armed with lots of inspiration from Instagram and Pinterest, they organised the whole thing over about 6 months, and spent just £3,500.

“Covid really scuppered our original plans but we managed to pull of a beautiful, unique wedding with our closest loved ones anyway,” the brides told us. “It made us realise that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a beautiful wedding.”

Pretty Woman Inspired Shoreditch Elopement

I have a question – could Terriann and Brittany BE any cuter?! “We met 12 years ago,” they told us, “when we were young, wild and free on Birmingham’s gay scene. We went on one date but our lives took us on very different paths. Little did we know that we would meet again and oh what a meet it would be! It was love at first sight, we both never knew what love was until we found each other again. We had a lockdown date that turned into being locked down together indefinitely.”

They decided they wanted an intimate elopement so that the whole day was for them and no-one else. They wanted something cool and wild, where their love was the star of the show. “We were inspired by the line ‘Wild women do and they don’t regret it,’ from the Pretty Woman Soundtrack by Robby Cool, The Angel Singers. We didn’t have a plan for the day, letting love and excitement lead the way. From heart shaped glasses, posing in the streets, stopping traffic so our boots could do the walking to smoke grenades in the back streets of Shoreditch, surrounded by graffiti and sunshine.”

Rollercoaster: Bright meets Retro Amusement Park Elopement Inspo

When Emily Zamora of Simply Wandering Photo got in touch with this styled shoot submission, we loved it not only for the gorgeous, fun pops of colour, but also for the unique styling concept! Emily told us; “The incredibly talented Abbey Rose Event Design with the concept of styling a wedding after a song.”

“Growing up in a household of musicians, music has always been a large part of Abbey’s life, so turning to music to inspire her was an obvious step. The song she chose was Rollercoaster by Bleachers. She wanted to incorporate the fun upbeat melody by adding in pops of colour and fun/vibrant elements throughout the day. And what better place to host such a celebration than at an actual working amusement park with rollercoasters.” We’re sure lots of you will resonate with Abbey’s love of music – is there a particular song that could inspire your day?

Love is an Adventure, Enjoy the Ride; A Surprise San Deigo Elopement

One morning in 2016, Allison and Tara saw a segment on the Today show about a new company that planned surprise vacations; ‘we looked at each other and at the same time Tara said “I would NEVER do that!” Allison said, “I would TOTALLY do that!”… and so, they booked their first trip for Valentine’s 2017.

“For us, love is about feeling safe to venture outside of your comfort zone,” the couple told us, “also how cool is it to have someone else do all the planning and neither of you have to be on the hook if the accommodations or destination don’t turn out right?!” The pair have used the Pack Up and Go experience as a tradition for Valentine’s day ever since. Fast forward to discussions about wedding planning, and neither of them had any interest in a formal affair.

Butterflies: Surprise Proposal Inspo for Music Lovers

We rarely feature engagement shoots, but when the proposal actually happened during it, and the couple are this cute, well, we will make an exception! This couple based their proposal around their favourite song and musician, and photographer Milly of The Rose Reflective hopes to inspire you to consider the role music plays in your relationship as a unique proposal idea, too!

The location, Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama, is steeped in musical history, with Freebird recorded there, and The Rolling Stones and Cher making their mark on the town, too. Jayme thought she was turning up for a couple’s portrait session that she’d booked, but little did she know that her girlfriend Abby had colluded with Milly to propose there and then and have her capture the whole thing!

A Nature meets Glam Outdoor Wedding

Linsey and Allison met on Tinder, and were crazy about each other from the moment they met! When it came to planning their September wedding, they were inspired by the barn and outdoor space at Garden Gate at Haley Farm in Maine, New England. “Our vision was captivating design and lush florals,” the couple told us, “to go alongside the beauty of the property. Our love for jewel tones was also an inspiration! We loved having so much outdoor space in the lawns and the back deck. We wanted an outdoor seating area the moment we saw the back deck.”

COVID restrictions at the time meant their guest list had to be small, of just 25 people. Bounty O’ Blooms provided lush florals for the day, and Nothing Bakes Like A Parrott a gorgeous pink ombre cake. One Stop Events provided rentals, but the rest of the day was planned themselves. “It is hard to plan a wedding during a pandemic! Although we had to plan a wedding with a small guest list it still feels like it turned out perfectly with our family and closest friends.”

Retro Glam Seventies Wedding Inspiration

This is a photo shoot in two parts, with two sets of real life couple models. Inspired by the 70s, we actually published a few shots in our last print issue, but we loved the images so much we wanted to share the full set with you today too!

Photographer Angela Gallo was inspired by a vintage shop near her home for the styling, “It’s basically a 70s dream!” she said. “One day I saw this little vintage lace wedding dress that caught my eye, and that’s when the idea hit me. I wanted to showcase two sides of an era, with the retro 70s bohemian look and a more retro-glam look.”

Laid Back & Lovely Austin Wedding

Like a lot of millennial couples, Allyse and Ana met over the internet. The first time they met IRL was at a queer dance party, where Ana gave Allyse a magnet with her face on it, which sealed the deal!

For their November 2019 wedding, they wanted to hold it an an inexpensive, all-in-one venue that was casual, fit their personalities and had some sentimental value to the both of them. They found this in The Ballroom at the Spiderhouse Cafe in Austin, Texas, a mid-century café and event space with tonnes of rock ’n roll history!

Simple, Intimate & Rustic Wedding in Spain

Raul and Ruben married in an intimate ceremony at Casa Benigalip, Alicante in July 2019. Joined by their closest friends and family, they wanted a day that was rustic, intimate and that reflected their love of food, drink and a good time – and judging by these gorgeous images, they achieved that and then some!

With a €20,000 budget, they employed Le Cocotet wedding planners to help co-ordinate from start to finish. “We didn’t hesitate to hire a wedding planner,” explained Raul, “we wanted someone to take the lead and help us make all the important decisions so there was no nasty surprises!” They used a variety of American wedding magazines and blogs to help inspire the details for their day – pulling inspiration from the local surroundings with opulent florals and rustic tableware, and Las Vegas dessert weddings with macrame and woven basket detailing.
