Travel Inspired Wedding in Chicago

vintage travel themed lesbian wedding (20)

Amy and Christina met online in 2008 and bonded over a mutual love of Kingdom Hearts, an action role-playing game. Their long distance relationship, and love of adventure, inspired their travel themed wedding.

“We travel all the time”, wrote Amy. “We drive to anime and comic conventions everywhere from Los Angeles to Boston each year and we go abroad three to five weeks a year. We’ve travelled to fifteen countries together in seven years, and we are always planning our next trip. Travelling strengthened our relationship and taught us how to care for each other and stick together through anything, but we also LOVE our home and wanted our wedding to be a celebration of Chicago. We  had vintage touches in the wedding which came from the fact that I have a history degree, and our condo is vintage industrial and filled with antiques like Crystina’s numerous 1893 Columbian Exposition souvenir books and my WWII propaganda posters.”

New York City Elopement at the Stonewall Inn

New York City lesbian elopement (5)

Ira and MJ wanted a short and sweet sunrise ceremony. They said their vows to each other in front of the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. The inn was a particularly significant place for them to marry as it was the site of the Stonewall riots of 1969, which is widely considered to be the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for gay and lesbian rights in the United States.

“The ceremony was short and simple and at sunrise”, began Ira. “We had just one of our good friends as our witness and only guest. Nicki, our photographer, suggested that sunrise would be great for taking photos and it was indeed perfect. The lighting was great and there were only a few people around. Afterwards, we took photos around west village, had brunch, Skyped with friends, took a nap, and then had oysters and drinks.”

Small and Private Wedding in Wellington

New Zealand Lesbian Wedding (25)

Laura and Toni wanted a low key wedding. After a ceremony at Wellington registry office, this kiwi pair had a small gathering at Logan Brown restaurant. “The whole point of the day for us was not to make a whole set of decisions for everyone else”, they explained. “All we kept hearing from other people was that they regretted making the whole day about keeping everyone else comfortable and ended up losing sight of the fact the event was supposed to be about them celebrating their love for each other. We debated eloping to Vegas (seriously) for about a year, before finally settling on doing something small, private and intimate, locally.”

The couple definitely didn’t want a theme, they just wanted a casual but stylish day that was about them and their love. “Not having a theme was quite a conscious decision. Given we didn’t want to spend much, décor and favours weren’t on the priority list. We wore things we were comfortably in and picked our flowers (which were silk) because we liked the colours! It was seriously that simple. The cake was the same – we picked flavours we liked and colours we liked. We didn’t care that it was a different to the flowers either! Controversy!”

Meg and Natasha met online. “Its our dirty little secret”, they laughed. “We are both super busy business women and were looking to find someone like-minded. Within a couple days of signing up we connected and then both ended our subscriptions. We both knew we had found our match.”

They were married in Colorado at Two Rivers Winery & Château.” We are both well-travelled, we own a high-end salon, and wanted to do something non-traditional for our wedding”, they continued. “We really focused on having more of a celebration than a stuffy wedding.”

Colourful Vegan Wedding in Kent

www.kerryannduffy.com

Anita and Claudia were married at The Ferry House Inn in Kent. They wanted a wedding that reflected them both so that meant lots of colour, lots of personal touches and everything being vegan.

“We knew that we weren’t pastel coloured kind of people, we love bright colours!”, Claudia began. “We are also not pom pom kind of people, and roses are not really our thing either… So nothing that was very popular in weddings really worked for us. Instead, we simply tailored the wedding to suit us, what we felt is normal…”

“The day had a rustic and boho chic feel but it was also colourful… and vegan!” she continued. “The whole wedding was vegan, so our outfits had to be too. I had my dress made by Frederica Bruno Couture, that ended up being one of the most expensive things but it was amazing and so worth it! Anita’s suit came from The Butch Clothing Company.”

Colourful & Edgy Ballet Inspired Wedding Shoot

Same_Sex_Stylized_Ballet_Shoot_KMitiska_Photography_095

Ballet might not seem very Rock n Roll… and for all intents and purposes it is anything but ‘edgy’, but when I saw this pretty, colourful and quirky set of wedding images, I knew I had to share them with you!

Photographer, Kimberly Mitiska, told me all about their inspiration. “This shoot took place at the beautiful Colorado Ballet. Once we picked out the pink wedding dress for one of our brides we knew that the Colorado Ballet would be a perfect match for the vision of the shoot. To top it off this lovely bride used to do ballet so she had some old pointe shoes that I incorporated into the photographs.”
