All the Fun of the Fair: A Herne Bay Pier Wedding Inspired By Sailor Jerry Tattoos

Since meeting at work 10 years ago, Vicky and Caz loved the idea of having an informal beach wedding somewhere alternative, and a fun day for all their family and friends to enjoy. They fell in love with Herne Bay so much that they’ve since decided to move there!

Armed with a £6000 budget, the couple were influenced by the phrase ‘Tying the Knot’ to theme their day, combined with Caz’s own artwork, which is inspired by Sailor Jerry tattoos and their pier-side location. Together with their mums, Vicky and Caz DIY’d all the elements for their day, including stationery, decor and favours. They handmade swallows which hung across the ceremony venue and added swallow decals to the walls. Caz used a carnival style font throughout the stationery to tie in with the pier location and a vibrant colour palette of blue and yellow. They painted pebbles to use as place names and keepsakes.

A Hailstorm, A Hidden PG Tips Monkey & All The Fun of The Fair!

Do you ever look at a wedding online and think “Ah man, I would have loved to have been at that wedding!?” I do this all the time and Amy and Dave’s day looks like it was a total HOOT! From a freak pre-ceremony rain storm, to real life fun fair amusements to all their guests, their main goal was to enjoy the day as much as physically possible. And oh boy, did they!?

Married at Marleybrook House in Canterbury, Amy and Dave’s main objective was simple: “Fun! Fun! Fun!” said the bride. “We wanted to organise something that felt like us. Neither of us are religious so we knew we wouldn’t want a church or anything, and a big stately home or country hotel just didn’t feel right. I was also conscious that sometimes weddings can feel a bit stale and formulaic so we wanted to avoid doing anything traditional for the sake of it. When looking for a venue I was trying to find something with a fun edge, and well, it doesn’t get much more ‘fun’ than a vintage fun fair and dodgems right?!”

Despite the rain, they still managed to have their dream of an outdoor ceremony, under the pagoda in the grounds of their venue. “We’d planned to hold our ceremony in the outdoor walled garden as it is absolutely gorgeous”, Amy explained. “Our florist had also built a fab floral asymmetric arch on the gazebo so I was desperate to make sure we could actually get married outside. On the day, first thing in the morning was glorious sunshine! The girls and me were so excited. Then it turned. We were getting ready in the onsite studio just behind the walled garden and could hear the crazy hailstorms coming down on the roof. The staff kept coming in to update us, absolutely soaked through. We ended up delaying a little as it was so on and off. I hadn’t realised, but Dave and the venue staff had all of our guests out with umbrellas and rolls of blue paper towel wiping ice and rain off of the seats minutes before the ceremony. Just as we thought we’d have to give in and move inside, they came to get us and said – we have to go NOW. So we abandoned our freshly poured glasses of champagne and went for it.”

Carnivale & AHS Freakshow Inspired Wedding Shoot

There’s something really fun and romantic about carnivals and fun fairs, making them the perfect spot for a cute engagement shoot!

“The inspiration for this shoot came from HBO’s Carnivale, the book Geek Love, Tod Browning’s Freaks, AHS Freakshow, and all things carnival”, said photographer Jillian Ryan. “The shoot took place in Queen Creek, AZ, at Frazier Show’s Carnival. I called the owner beforehand and got permission to shoot there. We were able to come a bit early which was great because no one else was there yet!”

“I hope this shoot inspires Rock n Roll brides and grooms to be unique. This is not your typical wedding location and our model’s aren’t wearing typical wedding clothes. I think the location and the style of the bride and groom really make it stand out. Why not wear a sparkly romper on your wedding day or rent out a carnival as your venue?! Your wedding can be whatever you want it to be. I totally would have gone this route for my own wedding if I’d thought about it at the time! Rock n Roll Bride is all about embracing your own version of weird and awesome, owning it, and doing your wedding your way.”

Pastel Fun Fair Wedding

Laura and Andy’s August wedding had it’s own fun fair! “We wanted an alternative theme but done in a grown up way” said Laura.

“When we first got engaged, we sat down to brainstorm all the things that make us ‘us’. We hadn’t been to many weddings, so we were able to let our imagination run wild! Our main viewpoint was that we wanted our guests to come away not just thinking ’that was the best wedding ever’ but ’that was the best day ever!”

“We had a secret fun fair! While our guests were eating, we had two fun fair companies arrive and set up stalls, a high striker, swing boats and mini golf! Then the guests were told that they were moving to a different part of the venue and the fun fair was revealed. Our plan went perfectly and it was totally worth it to see Andy’s 79 year old nan swinging on the swingboats with our 5 year old flower girl.”

While many couples opt to keep things casual and fuss-free, maybe shooting around their own neighbourhood and wearing comfortable clothes, others like Federica and Stefano choose to go all out! The Italian pair dressed up and went to a fun fair for their pre-wedding shoot.

“The idea behind the shoot was that love is fun!”, said photographer Simona. “Everything is illuminated when we are in love, things dance around like a carousel and life has the delicious taste of cotton candy! We wanted to reflect that in these photos.”
