A Focus on Flowers – A Handmade Californian Wedding

You love the diy weddings don’t you? Yeah me too so here’s another gem for you. John & Rose did everything themselves. They also looked for ideas on how to save money on pretty much everything. Rose wore a gorgeous second hand Nicole Miller called the Vintage Daisy Dress which she found online as well as hand making all the flower arrangements and her bouquet (the bridesmaids also made their own bouquets.) Rose’s parents made the cake and her brother made the stand, they had friends who made the desserts. Rose kept her look unfussy with sandals from Steve Madden and a necklace that had belonged to her Mum and a bracelet (made by John) that she already owned and a flower halo which she made herself from flowers from her parents’ back garden.

“Years ago I ripped a picture out of a J Crew catalogue, (before John and I met even…)” Rose told me, “of a wedding dress that was very very similar to the one I wore.  When John proposed I thought of the dress and found it was still available from J Crew, however it was $3000, much more than I was interested in spending.  So, I searched and searched for something similar in all the stores around from Salinas to Santa Barbara, to no avail.  Eventually I started searching the internet, and found the Nicole Miller vintage daisy dress (the one I wore) but it had been discontinued, and I could only find used options, that weren’t too affordable.  One day I came home from work early with a headache, and was looking around on ebay, and found the dress I wore, a brand new dress almost identical to the one in J Crew, for $350 instead of its original price of $1400!  Wow!  The minor problem was it was a size 16… but I bought it anyway, it came with tags attached in mint condition.  I took it to the Fitting Image seamstress in San Luis Obispo, and she basically made me a new dress.  I was stoked!!!”

Their Big Fat Leopard Print Lesbian Wedding

One of the things that really stood out in your survey responses was that a lot of you wanted more Rock n Roll same sex weddings. Well my dears, you ask and I deliver! I have actually been dying to feature Linsay & Amanda’s wedding for a while now but with wedding season being in full flow I have been a trifle busy! Patience is a virtue though my little kittens and I think you’ll realise that wait was worth it when you see these two kick ass chicks!

With people coming to their wedding from the UK and The States (Linsay is English and Amanda is from America) the couple decided on a kitsch Royal theme with red, white & blue as their colours (to reflect both flags) as well as for a bit of fun all round! “We just wanted to have fun with the theme but also sort of add a bit of camp irony to what was a fabulous lesbian wedding” Amanda told me. “I love the photo of the Fergie and Andrew choc tin! But seriously, it was a profoundly special day especially not only cause it was our wedding but because civil partnerships haven’t been  legal for that long and really lesbians need to find a new narrative when it comes to weddings. No More White Suits! You can both wear dresses and both be ‘the bride’ and balance it off well without either one having to feel overshadowed. And now Linz and I are wives for lives! How cool is that!?”

Both brides wore dresses by Candy Anthony – although it wasn’t planned! They both actually picked their dresses completely seperately.

Historic Firehouse Bridals

Do you remember Megan & Kevin’s ‘Oh so adorable’ engagement session that I posted last Autumn? Well when their photographer Erica heard that Megan was going to have a short wedding dress she couldn’t wait to do a bridal shoot with her too. They originally planned to have the session in a chocolate factory bur at the last minute decided to an historic firehouse in Springfield, Missouri. Megan put together and styled the shoot herself with a dress from Delia’s (which isn’t going to be her actual wedding day dress – she’s got another short dress to wear too though!) flowers that she put together herself, a cute birdcage veil from PinMeUpCouture on Etsy and Mootsie’s Tootsies shoes from Ebay which only cost her about $20!

Mad Hatter Rock n Roll Bride ~ Candy Floss, Beach Huts & The Great British Seaside

It’s that time of immense excitement for me again, when I finally get to share with you a ‘lil project I’ve been busying myself with behind the scenes. Unbelievably this shoot has been in the pipeline for over a year but it’s only now that I’ve had the time to get it all organised properly!

The Photographer
I first met Eliza Claire just over a year ago at the very first ‘Rock n Roll Bride meet’. We met in a teeny cocktail bar in central London. We drank cosmopolitans and mojitos and talked way into the night about business, photography and changing the face of the UK wedding industry…and look how far we’ve come in only a year! At this first meeting we talked about doing a photo shoot together and would you believe it’s actually taken this long to get it together. However, as always, the wait was so worth it as within the past 12 months we’ve got to know so many more amazing people in the industry, a few of which we asked along to join in the fun.

Minimal Modern with Vintage Touches

I really love featuring weddings that I feel like I was in anyway a little part of shaping. Not only did the bride Carolynne read Rock n Roll Bride throughout her planning (yey!) but she even won one of my contests for a cute Lissita Treasure Ring by TokyoMade which she gave to her Maid of Honour to wear on the day!

This fabulous diy wedding was held at Prairie Production in downtown Chicago. Carolynne looks fabulous in her $75 dress which she found on Ebay (wow!) and her Joan & David shoes. She teamed these with a hat/veil combo which she found by Cyndef Designs on Etsy and vintage gloves and jewellery. Her groom, Andy looked pretty damn dapper in his Michael Kors suit too!

“We wanted to have a chic, urban wedding that we would want to go to if we were the guests” the bride explained.  “Since I had only been to one other wedding in my life before this, I had little to go on, but as long as it had awesome music & food, and no boring speeches or dumb traditions (like throwing a garter) then really anything was possible!” The couple really wanted to have a mix of modern and vintage styling and found the minimal loft space of Prairie Production to be perfect for this. They were able to add classy touches with the simple flower designs and vintage touches with their outfits and that cool car!

Ted & Tamara’s Budget-Conscious ‘Tree of Life’ Wedding

There ain’t no one that ‘did it their own way’ as much as Ted & Tamara. “Our budget ‘tree of life’ themed day was filled with love” they began their email to me last week. “With a limited budget, I set out to make our special for us with simple tree stumps found along the Mississippi River. Our bridal party wore simple summer-loving attire that are so ‘re-usable’. My J Crew dream dress was found on ebay for $80. Orchids sang, yellow petals danced, willow branches waved all around us. Pure bliss.”  The couple only spend $2000 on their perfect wedding day. “When I started dreaming up my wedding,” Tamara continued “we were going to be starting a new life together. I always think of trees as representing life and when Ted found the perfect pieces of driftwood from the Mississippi River for us to use we knew that was what sort of wedding we wanted. We wanted a ceremony to be sweet, meaningful with a fun casual atmosphere.”
