Relaxed Retro Desert Wedding Inspired by The Big Lebowski

Brittany and Nick had one major inspiration for their October 2019 wedding – The Big Lebowski! Their venue played a major part of setting the scene for this – with it’s mid-century modern aesthetic, the boutique AirBnB High Desert Paradise in the Yucca Valley provided the perfect backdrop for their relaxed retro theme!

They hired the house for the whole weekend and had all their best friends crash there with them. As well as the wedding on the Saturday, they hosted a pool party brunch on the Sunday to reminisce and unwind. “All our friends travelled so far, from Boston, to be with us,” said Brittany. “It was amazing to be able to put them up and spend so much time with them!”

Moody Meets Art Deco Wedding with a Dog & Toddler Bridal Party!

They say never work with children or animals but Lane and Amanda threw that, and many other old adages and traditions, out the window when it came to planning their big day – they had their dog, Penny, and Amanda’s son, River, as the only members of their bridal party!

Instead of a first look, Lane and Amanda decided to do a ‘first touch’. They had gifts to give each other, and so stood round a corner from one another to exchange them and have a precious moment together before the celebrations kicked off.

The moment that Amanda had thought about the most in the lead up to their wedding was walking down the aisle. “I definitely thought I would be sobbing and unable to hold myself together,” said Amanda, “but when I saw everyone out there and Lane standing at the end of the aisle, I was overcome with immense joy in the form of hysterical laughter. I just could not stop laughing!”

Philosophical & Kawaii Mash-Up Wedding… with Dogsmaids!

Kerry knew it was love when Nick took her Alpaca trekking as a date. They met on OK Cupid and bonded over a shared love of Moomins and both having siblings in Hong Kong, In fact they turned away completely from tradition, because, in Kerry’s words, “not to be cool but because we found it all a bit sick-in-your-mouth and cringeworthy.”

They cancelled plans for a huge wedding in Budapest and got married in secret at St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, with just 12 guests present, and their two Chihuahuas as ‘dogsmaids’ instead of bridesmaids! They spent the night before, and morning of the wedding together, and walked down the aisle together. They ‘said yes to the dress’ together, Kerry didn’t do a ‘pre-wedding diet’ (“in fact, I ate and drank more in the run up!”), they had no cake cutting or planned speeches or first dance… and they didn’t invite the brides’ parents.

“I made the decision not to invite my parents to the wedding which caused a lot of upset and hurt but I decided not to do it just to ‘tick a box’,” explained Kerry. “While I love them dearly, I haven’t had the easiest of relationships with either of them and nor do they with each other. I didn’t want to bring drama to the day and families usually spell drama. It was the best decision I made because since that point, I have had more meaningful conversations with my mother than I’ve had in a decade, so sometimes it pays to make a difficult decision.”
