Celebrating your Un-Wedding: Six Ways to Mark your Postponed Wedding Day

With new restrictions, local lockdowns and the ever-looming presence of Covid-19, weddings seem to be balancing on a knife edge. Here at Rock n Roll Bride (I mean, its a wedding industry wide feeling TBH!) we feel such anguish for those couples who planned a 2020 wedding and have now had to push back. Today, writer LJ Stocks shares six ways you can still make your postponed wedding date special.

If you’ve been planning your wedding for a long time and have dreamt joyful singing, jam-packed dance floors and tight hugs from your closest friends and family, having to postpone your day is, to be blunt, a huge disappointing pain in the arse. Maybe you’ve opted to have a smaller Covid secure ceremony with a big party planned for next year (fingers crossed!) or maybe you’ve pushed back entirely. Whichever camp you’re in you’ll have had to make tough decisions and it sucks balls.

For those of you who can see the date of your postponed wedding approaching, I think it’s really important to still mark the day, rather than see it pass by without a mention. As well as recognising the hard work and planning that you’ve put in, it’s an excuse to take a break from this hellish year and do something fun with the one you love.

Because if we don’t take every opportunity for fun at the moment, life is just going to start dragging us down! So, chin up girl, let’s take a truly weird situation and make it fabulous.

Here are six ideas for rocking your ‘supposed-to-be-wedding’ day.

Take a day off

Meet up with your bridal party (as long as the numbers adhere to whatever the social distancing guidelines are in your town/ country at the time…) Socially distanced fun with your bridesmaids and best men will mark your day in style. Picnic in the park? Day out at a theme park? Dinner at your favourite eatery? Grab your face mask and just get super silly for the day.

Get snappy

Photo shoots are back on! See if your wedding photographer is still available and frolic in fields, build sandcastles on a beach or get moody around a sunset fire pit to capture memories on the day that should have been your wedding. I love the idea of making a real occasion out of the day. Rather than pretending it doesn’t exist, mark the day with some epic shots to look back on in years to come. It’s all part of your wedding and marriage journey.

The Best Face Masks to Keep you Safe & Stylish at your Wedding

Photo: Dan Bushkin Photography

Well here’s a blog post I never in a million years thought I’d be putting together – the best face masks to keep you safe (but crucially stylish!) on your socially distanced wedding day. WHAT A GODDAMN WORLD. It’s important to be safe and keep others around you safe too, and with wearing them in enclosed public spaces becoming mandatory from today (July 24th) in England, you’re going to need to stock up.

Wearing a face mask now part of daily life in the UK, so here are some of the best face masks I’ve seen around the internet over the past few weeks… All of which would look awesome with your wedding outfit too TBH!

L.O.M, £14.90

We love LOM and their epic prints here at Rock n Roll Bride and their face masks are well made, comfortable and super freaking cool. The best part about these is the elastic goes around the back of your head, rather than your ears, which makes them much more comfortable to wear.

Unfortunately, these stunning rainbow beauties sold out almost immediately but I’m hoping Megan makes more soon because I NEED that top one!

Millie’s Masks, £5.95 – £9.95

The brainchild of Jo of The Couture Company and her daughter Millie, who started making masks because she needed something to keep her entertained while off from school. Their story hit the headlines which has enabled Jo to pivot her bridal business during the pandemic to making these awesome patterned masks.

Isolated Heroes, £15

Another Rock n Roll Bride favourite! Isolated Heroes makes the BEST sequined and sparkly clothes, and they’ve bought that same sparkle to their sequinned masks. This ivory one with gold stars would be perfect for a bride!

Lirika Matoshi, $50

These are definitely a more spendy option at $50 a pop, but they’re SOOO damn pretty and would be perfect for a wedding day splurge.

Jazzy Garms, £12

Positivity During A Pandemic: How To Make The Most Of This Time If You Have A Wedding To Plan

{DEEP BREATH}

You guyssssss, 2020 is a real fucking trip. My heart goes out to everybody effected by what’s going on right now (so that’s the entire world then?) not least of all those of you that have a wedding that was supposed to happen over the next few months. There have been so many articles and social media posts written recently about how to postpone your weddings (I particularly liked this one from Happiful magazine) but this is not another one of those. Instead, today I wanted to today talk to you about how (once you’ve dealt with the drama, pain and logistics of actually postponing your day) you can now move forward and use this time in the very best way possible.

The fact of the matter is that problems/ bumps in the road/ challenges are a fact of life, and whatever way Covid-19 is affecting you right now (with your business or job, with health concerns, with worries about vulnerable members of your family, or with dealing with your wedding) it is our attitude toward them that matters the most.

I fully appreciate that what I’m about to say may ruffle a few feathers, in fact it may darn right piss you off but I TRULY, with my whole entire being, believe that that how you approach what is happening will either pay dividends to your mental health and how you move on from this moment… Or it won’t. It’s up to you, boo.

We have been given the gift of time. That’s a fact. Yes, the other side of the coin is that there is also a lot of emotional pain, money worries and trauma to deal with, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that most of us (BIG love to all the NHS staff and key workers keeping the country going right now) now have a lot of extra time on our hands.

I choose to focus on the good. Focusing on the positives around this situation doesn’t in anyway negate the negatives. However, I simply choose to put my focus on the (however small) slithers of hope and joy that I’m witnessing. You may call me idealistic, you may call me naive, you may even call me privileged but this is how I choose to view the world, not only throughout this pandemic, but my entire life! This is also your choice to make.

Think about it this way (and thanks to Sophia Hilton for this analogy – I stole it from an Instagram Live she did last week) If you booked a holiday to the Maldives, would you sit on your sun lounger complaining that you’d spent all this money to be there? Would you wake up every day and say “OMG we’re going to have to eat baked beans for a month to pay for this!” No, you would ENJOY THE FUCK out of that holiday. Yes, it cost you a lot of money to get there, but while you’re there you may as well use and enjoy the time you have in paradise.
