Why You Should Have an Eco-Friendly, Intimate Outdoor Ceremony

With COVID-related restrictions still very much up in the air and the weather finally getting warmer, many 2021 couples are choosing to elope outside. Today, photographers Jo and Patrick of Enchanted Bride have some top tips and things for you to think about if you’d like to follow suit!

An outdoor intimate wedding or elopement is the perfect choice right now because it is safe, sustainable, eco-friendly and kind to our planet. All you need is love, a sense of adventure, and maybe some good hiking boots. As well as keeping the planet smiling, your bank balance will thank you too as there won’t be expensive venue hire costs to contend with AND your pictures will be incredible – I mean, what’s not to love?

Since the pandemic, couples are realising there are many more options available to them and are focusing more on what is important. The great thing about having an outdoor wedding is it is easy to be flexible, it’s COVID safe andis much easier to reschedule.

WHAT EXACTLY IS AN ELOPEMENT?

An elopement is a small, intimate, meaningful, intentional wedding experience that is a
true reflection of your relationship as a couple, with the focus on the two of you. It is the day you choose to say your vows, using your own words, to each other, on your own in front of your celebrant or occasionally with a few close friends and family included.

ECO-FRIENDLY AND LOW IMPACT

Big weddings create a huge amount of waste. By having a small guest list, not sending out paper invites or using huge amounts of flowers and decorations, you reduce your carbon footprint. You won’t need to spend money decorating your outdoor ceremony location, nature is always the best backdrop. It also saves you time setting up and packing away, and you’re not buying anything that will only be used once.

BUDGET

Outdoor, celebrant-led elopements are cost effective. You will be able to save thousands by not hiring a licensed venue with the licensed ceremony room and their Registrar. This will allow you to spend money on what’s important for you.

DO WE NEED AN CELEBRANT OR OFFICIANT?

In England and Wales, an outdoor ceremony is not (yet!) legal so you will still need to go to the Register office to sign the paperwork. Therefore you do not HAVE to have a celebrant for your outdoor elopement, but having one is something we always encourage. A celebrant will be able to work with you to create and conduct your wedding ceremony for you, and make it really personal and special.

Boho Chic Meets Star Wars Inspired Wedding

Josh and Katie met in secondary school. After being in the same tutor group and not exchanging a single word, it took until they ended up in a mutual friendship group in college several years later for them to finally hit it off! They’d been together for nine years and engaged for eight of those before planning their wedding day. As self-confessed Star Wars geeks, with matching Star Wars tattoos already, they knew they wanted a day that captured their nerdiness without being tacky, and also complimented their wedding venue as that was the first thing they picked.

Their ceremony took place in a beautiful rustic barn which was simply decorated with vintage, mismatched jugs full of a mix of fresh, wild flowers and artificial ones, and decorated hula-hoops. They had a simple ceremony, with the registrar reading a small Celtic poem to wish them good luck before they exchanged vows. The best-man performed favourite songs by Zac Brown Band before Josh and Katie exited the barn to a confetti shower as the new Mr and Mrs Smith.

Moorland Themed Cornish Wedding Fit for Rock n Roll Royalty!

Melissa and Nathan’s Rock n Roll love story starts seven years ago with a post-gig high-five gone wrong. Nathan was in a band at the time and Melissa was front row for the after show celebration, but ended up with a little more than she bargained for and getting accidentally smacked in the face! Undeterred by this initial hiccup, their relationship blossomed over the next 18 months and culminated in Melissa meeting Nathan off the plane from his stint on an American tour. They’ve been together ever since!

After getting engaged, Rock n Roll Bride became a bible for them and guided them through the muddy waters of wedding planning. While the couple didn’t have a theme as such, one particular piece of advice stood out for Melissa; “I remember reading in one of the first copies of the magazine that ‘your wedding should look like the inside of your home’ which made perfect sense for me! So we just took all the things we love and ran with it.”

Private Cornish Barn Elopement with Netflix Before Bed!

Looby and Ryan’s big day was not at all traditional but incredibly personal, and that’s why we love it so much. The couple eloped to beautiful Cornwall, with a ceremony in a refurbished rustic barn with just the registrar and officiants as their witnesses, followed by their ‘reception’: A night in in a beautiful cottage at the venue. We love their whole attitude towards wedding planning and how true to themselves they stayed – Looby and Ryan, we salute you!

The whole day was held at The Green Cornwall. For the ceremony, the refurbished barn was made to look intimate with a drawn curtain and fairy lights hanging from the beams. Looby and Ryan walked from their cottage to the venue together and then down the aisle together to Old Pine by Ben Howard (oh, the tears!) Afterwards they walked out to Year 3000 by Busted. Mark from Evolve Photography took their portraits with their two pugs and the bump, and then followed on with their intimate reception where they played battleships back at their cottage whilst a professional chef cooked them a three course meal. They then had a bath and watched Netflix. Is that the dream or is that the dream?!
