A Shamanic Wedding Ceremony in Guatemala: Daniela & Mark

Kat

January 30, 2012

How utterly beautiful is today's real wedding? This is the kind of wedding that makes my heart sing - no fuss, no details, no over-the-top-bridezilla-stresses - just the most important thing...love. The bride, Daniela, told me all about their special day. "There were only the two of us at the ceremony, the lady who married us, the lady who owned the land and our photographer. The ceremony itself lasted about 1.5 hrs and consisted of several parts: lighting the fire, being cleansed with special leaves and incense, hearing the 20 nahuales of the Mayan Calendar being read out, telling each other our love and exchanging our rings, being wrapped in a green shawl which represented Gaia. We began and ended the ceremony with chocolate, a block of which was also burned in the fire. Chocolate is sacred in Mayan culture."

Carolyn & Julian’s Multi-Coloured, RayBan Registration of Marriage

Kat

December 8, 2010

"My husband and I met on New Year's day in 2007 after a persistent friend-turned-matchmaker insisted that we meet," began Carolyn, the bride, when I asked her to tell me the story of how she met Julian. "It wasn't love at first sight at all, in fact I thought he looked like an obnoxious guy! It wasn't until we started chatting online and finally meeting up a couple more times, and when he asked "Have you heard of Explosions In The Sky?" (our space-out-heart-tugging fave musicians). It was a done deal. We became inseparable ever since."

Angie & Jordy’s Musical, Heavily Tattooed, Central Park Wedding

Kat

September 8, 2010

Central Park played host to Angie and Jordy's wedding. Originally from Ottawa, Canada, the couple chose New York to get married in because it was the first place they travelled to together, "It just seemed like the ideal location for us" Angie told me. "We wanted to see more Broadway shows and catch a Yankee's game. No to mention many of our guests had never been and who doesn't want to visit New York?"

THIS is What it’s All About – Forget the Details & the ‘Blog-Worthy Wedding’ Obsession

Kat

July 30, 2010

There is always a lot of chatter around blog land about details details details. Photographers are obsessed with getting couples with detail-heavy weddings so that the blogs and magazine will want to feature them. While this is true (after all wedding blogs and mags are primarily read by brides-to-be who want to see weddings with ideas they can steal for their own big day) do you ever think that this obsession to have a 'blog-worthy' detail heavy wedding might be a little excessive? I'm not one to slag aaaanybody's wedding off but I do see some weddings circulating around blog land that just seem so...well...contrived. Like a circus almost. Like a made-for-blogs-wedding-circus. The results are pretty much always gorgeous and inspiring but do you ever look at weddings like that and feel depressed or inadequate about your own wedding?

Under the Sea – An Aquarium Wedding

Kat

July 10, 2010

I may not have seen anything so gloroius in a long time. This venue is STUNNING. What a unusual and spectacular place for a wedding. Jen & Lou chose Adventure Aquarium to play host to their wedding reception. With the sea life swimming all around them all evening, teamed with their subtle beach theme, the scene was most certainly set for a very different wedding. Jen also chose a very floaty/flowing gown by Kleinfeld Bridal whcih almost looked like crashing waves around her. A-mazing!

On a Quirky & Personal Afternoon

Kat

January 17, 2010

Brett & Louise had an quirky and personal afternoon ceremony which was held at the Mt Coo-tha Botanical Gardens in Brisbane, Australia. Their untraditional ceremony featured two rituals, both a ring warming and a hand-fasting ceremony. Photographer Rebecca told me all about this fun and family-oriented day: During the ring warming ceremony the rings were past around the guests who were asked to give their blessings and to make a wish for Louise & Brett’s future together. During the exchange of rings Louise went from tears to laughter which help to create fantastic emotive images of her. After the exchanging of the rings the hand fasting was performed. This ceremony involved Brett and Louise’s mothers winding and tying a piece of ribbon around their hands binding them together in life.

Two Sides to the Story

Kat

December 2, 2009

Allison & Gabe's wedding day started like every other - excitable, elegant, stylish and full of lurrrrve - then night fell and the chaos and fun of rock star proportions ensued! I love how the couple's attire matches their mood - beginning of the day - excited, demure and classy (I adore Allison's simple dress), end of the night - ruffled and rocking the hell out (and again I adore Allison's dress!) In fact it wasn't just the bride who changed - the whole wedding party got changed (the women into ruffles, the men into dinner suits) for the massive party at the end of the night! Photographer Inbal me all about the madness, Allison and Gabe had a ceremony on a boat in the east river, incorporated marriage rituals from basically every religion they could think of (and made up a few of their own), and later had their reception at the Princess Manor in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, who also catered. They had ice sculptures made in their likeness! Kenley from Project Runway crashed the wedding! The bride got so drunk she lost her shoes (I gave her mine and she still has them)! As you can see, they partied pretty hard and made their own rules. Thanks to Inbal for sharing and of course to Allison & Gabe for being too freakin' awesome for words!

Autumn Leaves

Kat

November 11, 2009

Oh yes, yet another autumn/fall/Halloween wedding for you lucky lucky people, but this one couldn't be further away in style from the last. Darby & Eric got married at Heritage Park in Dana Point California on October 3rd 2009 and the reception followed at Darby's Parents home nearby with just some of their closest friends and family. A super personal, uber stylish affair the couple really went all out to make it their own. I am absolutely loving the autumn leaf bouquets and subtle Halloween theming around the event - not OTT, not crazy, just them. Oh and I had to mention the bride and bridesmaid's dresses too... swwaaaahhhoooon! Thanks to Molly & Matt for the exclusive. Love love lurrrve

A Punk Rock Fairytale

Kat

August 12, 2009

Alysson & David's wedding was a fusion of traditional, rock n roll and crazy awesome hair! They were married in a church that was a converted school by David's father who is a pastor. As photographer, Daniel Krieger said to me... The couple tore up the dance floor once some loud punk music came on the stereo.. the atmosphere of the wedding was just a chill, fun time.. people with different coloured hair and regular looking aunts all on the dance floor together. Alysson's Amsale dress was accoumpanied it with some shoes by Chinese Laundry, bought from DSW. The rock star credentials don't stop there though. Not only did The Ramones play at their reception (!) but they had a pair of guests, Tish and Snooky, that not only used to be in Blondie (ARRGH!) but are the founders of Manic Panic (kick ass hair colour dye.) I think right now I owe those two a huge thank you for creating such amazing rainbow hair dye! Thanks to Daniel for sending this rock star wedding to me! Credit: Daniel Krieger

The Wedding Tree

Kat

July 18, 2009

I am so over the moon to be the first blog to bring you this amazing wedding. Paul & Cassie's day really couldn't be anywhere but Rock n Roll Bride though surely? From her cute cute dress, to their kick ass tattoos - from the simply sweet ceremony site (just plastic chairs and autumnal leaves) to all the adorable personal touches (I am crazy in love with their thumb print wedding tree 'guest book'.) There is in fact nothing I don't love and I could go on with a big old list of everything I am swooning over right now. However it's probably better for me just to share the photographic joy oui? Thanks to the wonderful Jonas Peterson for the Rock n Roll Bride exclusive!
