Unique & Alternative Bridesmaid Fashion Ideas – in Association with The NOT Wedding

Are you loving the mismatched bridesmaid trend but are a little unsure about how to pull it off with your own girls? Avoid them looking uncoordinated or simply like the rest of your guests with a few of my simple tips on how to tie them together in easy and subtle ways. With effortless attentions to detail your bridesmaids really will look as faaaabulous as the girls pictured here. I promise!

Making sure all your bridesmaid’s bouquets are the same is a guaranteed way to make sure no one mistakes them. No matter how different their outfits are, anyone carrying a bouquet is pretty obviously part of the wedding party!

Unusual but matching accessories such as scarves (as illustrated), handbags, shoes, or statement jewellery is another great way to tie your bridesmaids together. Even if they wear each the look quite differently (each bridesmaid pictured is wearing the scarf in a different way) the similar flash of fabric and colour will tie them together beautifully.

If their outfits are vastly different, keeping your bridesmaid’s hairstyle or hair accessories similar or the same will again, tie them together in a unique fashion. Floral hair accessoires are BIG for this year’s wedding season as are dishevelled and messy up-do’s. Remember Elsie’s tutorial for the beehive up-do? Her bridesmaids all rocked this look so well!

Fabric details are another subtle way to make your bridesmaid’s look part of the same team. The girls pictured are all dressed in a similar colour scheme, but even if they weren’t, a dramatic and obvious pattern (ie aa distinctive pattern or lace as pictured) would tie them together really well.

Different outfits in the same colour or hue (different shade variations of one colour) has been a popular option for Rock n Roll Brides for a while now and I certainly don’t see this trend going anywhere. How about taking it to the next level and having one of your girls in a jumpsuit as pictured here? I personally love love love this look!

In a similar way you don’t have to insist your bridesmaids wear the same shoes to tie this look together, keeping them in the same colour scheme will again allow them to make some thoroughly modern and unique style choices.

Oysters, Beach Huts & Paddling in the Sea – Abby & Julian’s Beautiful Whitstable Beach Wedding

Ahh the great British seaside! While we can’t rival (what seems like) the rest of the world in the sunshine stakes, our beach resorts certainly do have some beautiful British charm don’t they? I’ve visited Whitstable a number of times (it’s where we shot the mad hatter bride shoot!), and I have to say, photographer Joanna Brown‘s capture of this wonderful town is pretty much perfect. What a lucky couple Abby & Julian are to have had her as their wedding photographer!

After Julian proposed on Whitstable beach in September, the seaside town seemed like the perfect place to get married too. The couple were wed at The Beacon House on the seafront. “We both really wanted to get married, but to be honest neither of us were particularly fussed about a fancy wedding, and once I’d had a look at a couple of wedding magazines I started having mini-palpitations at the horror and the cost of it all,” Abby told me. ” I do love a wedding, but I hate being centre of attention myself and the whole coordinated, packaged nightmare of it was enough to bring me out in a sweat. We did visit a few beautiful venues, but knew they were just not us, and the final straw was visiting a perfectly manicured courtyard garden venue which had installed a permanent marquee ‘facility’ complete with carpet tiles AND bow back seat covers (my two pet hates), glowing colour change pillars ‘to fit your colour scheme’ and multi-function twinkling ‘star canopy’. They were so proud of it and it just epitomised everything I hate and DID NOT WANT at our wedding.  Finding the world of wedding blogs was a revelation and really just gave me the confidence to do what we wanted all along.”

“I already knew about The Beacon House from researching accommodation in Whitstable but we’d initially ruled it out as being too small,” Abby continued. “We went back to have a proper look just before Christmas, and while we were there popped into some nearby venues to see if they might work as a spill-over reception venue.  As soon as we went into East Quay we knew it was perfect.  I had my heart set on getting married at The Beacon House , so we decided to keep the ceremony small (on the veranda over-looking the sea) and just invite everyone along for a big party afterwards at East Quay.”

The theme really fell into place after the venue’s were sorted, and a vintage seaside theme was settled on. “The obvious theme to go with was vintage seaside which is great in itself but I was really conscious that I didn’t want it to be twee or pretty-pretty,” the bride continued. ” I also really wanted the wedding to have a personal, intimate feel about it, so decided early on that I wanted the whole thing to be as homemade as we could.  I think some people initially thought this was a cost cutting exercise but actually, tho our budget was quite tight, I would have done it this way regardless.  I don’t get the opportunity to be particularly creative in my job but I’m always cutting, sticking and sewing things together at home so this was really a dream project for me.”

“Because we didn’t want anything to be too fussy, manicured, pretty or perfect, I decided early on to keep the decoration simple, fill the room with homemade white pom poms and make the flowers the main source of colour. In the end we ran out of white tissue and the pom poms ended up being various shades of white pink and purple but I think it worked just as well. I looked into hiring table linen but I ended up finding some red and white tea towels in Ikea for 19p each (approx a third of what I’d been quoted for napkin hire) and decided to go with them instead.”

“We tied everything up with the same red and white striped ribbon and instead of name cards and table plans we just dug out funny pictures of all our guests, printed them out polaroid stylee and just left the guests to wander around and find their places, which was a great ice-breaker.”

Bridesmaids: The Movie – Win Tickets to an EXCLUSIVE Pre-Release Screening

Oh how I’ve been dying to see this movie. Who doesn’t love a good wedding chick flick? I was super jealous last month when I read that all my favourite US bloggers were getting to see the film before the rest of the world but now it’s our turn!

The movie isn’t released in the UK until June 22nd but Universal Pictures and the incredible Charley from London Bride have arranged an exclusive (and I mean exclusive – the cinema only hold 45 people) preview showing of the film on Wednesday 15th June. There will even be free drinks and canapés. I’m SOLD! I’ll be heading down to Soho Hotel, London with a bunch of other wedding obsessives, giant bowl of sweet popcorn in tow.

The best bit though? I have two tickets for you and a friend to come along and join in the fun too.

Amy & Manny’s Morocc’ n Roll Backyard Wedding

Amy & Manny were married in the bride’s parent’s back garden which they decorated themselves in an eclectic and fabulously ‘them’ style. ” I actually didn’t really intend for my wedding to be all Rock n Roll, and it turned out that way anyway,” explained the bride. “It was kind of Moroccan/Rock n Roll… a Morocc’ n Roll style! I think the fact that it was a Rock n Roll wedding without trying… that makes it ROCK N ROLL! Plus the awesome leopard party booth couch, the fact that my Dad plus the groom & all the groomsmen wore chucks…”

Oh yes that party photo booth couch? How rad it that!? I was keen to hear all about how that came about, “The famous leopard “party booth” couch: We literally found the couch on the side of the road (sorry if that’s a shocker to everyone who sat on it… but we did clean it!) So, one day Manny calls me & tells me he saw this cool leopard couch by Manny’s work on an industrial street sitting outside of a building on the sidewalk. I don’t think anything of it, but my Mom & I went jogging in that area the next day & saw the couch he was talking about. Then my Mom & I started joking around about how we could use it in the wedding… So my Dad came with the truck, we picked it up & we all decorated it with fringe & flowers & fabric. Everyone loved it!”

The rest of the reception décor was just as much a DIY effort. Again, Amy told me all about her favourite details. “We couldn’t find a cake that A: “wowed” us and B: justified spending $700 plus on flour & sugar… so we got individually boxed cupcakes in 4 different flavors (decadent dark chocolate, ravishing red velvet, very vanilla & razz matazz razz berry) from “Casey’s Cupcakes” in Riverside. We had gone on a couple dates there when we first started dating, and it turned into one of “our” places, so it was perfect & everyone loved them. Our cake for cutting was a small 6 inch round strawberry cake from the Wal-Mart bakery that was $8 and delicious! We wouldn’t have done it any other way.”

“Table cloths: all fabric we just bought from LA & cut into table cloths. We tied the corners to keep them from blowing away. The runners were the same fabric in alternating colors placed loosely in the center of each table.”

“Place card frames: I went to Michaels & bought wooden frames & painted each of them a different color. Then I just printed out fairy tale phrases & put them on each table”

“The Moroccan style lanterns on each table were my inspiration for Moroccaning. I saw them at Ross & my parents bought them for me that Christmas.”

“Bridesmaid Dresses were found in downtown L.A for $91 each. They were the perfect color & style but they were calf length & looked very bo-peepish. So on the day of the wedding, we cut the dresses to knee length. We used the extra fabric in the centerpiece for our table (pillows, fabric & a crown). All the girls picked out their own silver shoes. The girls wore necklaces that say “Gorgeous” which was a gift from me.”

Monique & Lee’s 1920’s Powerhouse Wedding

Jonas Peterson weddings are like gold dust and I’m so honoured that he lets me feature so many of them (for those of you that don’t know the inner workings of blog-land, a wedding will generally go to one blog or magazine only, so being allowed to be the lucky one is really something when a wedding is as stunning as this one.)

Monique & Lee were married at Brisbane Powerhouse – a wonderfully urban and industrial converted powerhouse. It is now home to a theatre and a couple of restaurants and is right on the river. Stunning! Monique wore a gorgeous reproduction vintage dress from Le Luxe Clothing. “I never even set foot into a bridal store, let alone tried on a ”proper” bridal dress – I always wanted a vintage, flapper inspired dress but found it incredibly difficult to find one in my size – I’m an AU 14, and I’m pretty sure chicks in the 1920s had waists the size of my thigh! I spent months searching for one and really hit the jackpot when I found Le Luxe Clothing. Because it’s not enough for me to just have beads and sequins, I added a feather capelet by Ksubi, that I bought on ebay.” She chose not to carry real flowers, and instead created her own vintage brooch bouquet.

“The bouquet took a lot of work but it was worth it! It’s just a Styrofoam ball, which Lee covered in chicken wire for support. We gathered lots of vintage brooches, and he wired them onto the chicken wire. He looped the wire through the back of the brooch, and attached it by sticking the ends of the wire stick into the Styrofoam ball. He also glued some of them down with hot glue. We used some fabric to mask the messy bottom of the sphere, and the handle is just a thick bit of wood wrapped in the fabric. It was time consuming but easy (says me, who watched him work while I sat back with a glass of wine in one hand and a book in the other) thanks to hot glue guns and a bit of patience (why he made it and not me!)”

To keep their wedding personal, the couple decorated the venue themselves and asked friends and relatives to help out where they could. “We didn’t have any fresh flowers. Again, for some reason I never really considered it. We had a cocktail-style reception, so we didn’t need centrepieces or anything, which let me have a bit more fun with the ”flowers”. I decorated using a combination of button flowers, newspaper roses, fabric flowers and paper flowers, stuck in old jars and glass milk bottles. I sourced all the flower decorations from some super talented people on Etsy.”

“There’s nothing more Rock n Roll, in my opinion, than being exactly who you are and standing by that. Which is why I think there is still something super Rock n Roll in uber traditional weddings,” Monique told me. “I’d never been to a wedding until my own, so I didn’t approach it with any preconceived notions about what a wedding should be. So I just made it about the things that we like. And while I know it was different, and unique, I very rarely felt we were planning a wedding that was really out there. We did (mostly) all the traditional stuff, but just tweaked it to suit our style. For example, I wear 20’s inspired clothing anyway, so I glammed it up several notches for the wedding.”

“Lee loves zombies and Transformers and explosions, so I vowed to ”fight and die by your side in the event of a zombie invasion or robot attack”. We approached the wedding as a big fat celebration of our love, not just for each other but for the people around us. And being a celebration, our main goal was to have a lot of fun. There was tequila, and dancing, and big rock god slides across the floor. I got so drunk I could barely cut the cake and sang until my throat hurt. And we had so so so much fun.”

“I’m 24, and there were quite a few people who felt I shouldnt be getting married at all, let alone in the ”alternative” way I did it. (Funny how some words take on such negative connotations at times!) I don’t know what it is about weddings, but I found that people aren’t shy in telling you that what you’re doing isn’t the norm, or that you’ll look back and regret not being more traditional. But I’m exceptionally lucky to have family and friends that stood by me and my ideas even when they thought I was crazy.”

“Under The Boardwalk” – Aimee & James’ DIY, 1950’s Carnival Wedding

Aimee & James were married on The Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, Ca. The day was a 1950′s inspired vintage one with a carnival vibe. The bride wore a custom made dress inspired by Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face and amazing blue shoes by Moda in Pelle. The couple were engaged in Paris. James proposed on new years and the stroke of midnight.

“We wanted to have a 1950’s vintage carnival theme wedding because we were having it at the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz, Ca. Due to the rich history of the location, we were not short on ideas for how we would bring the nostalgia of the times through. We wanted to almost transport our guests back to a time when family values and marriage were really celebrated. For me the idea of marriage is an old-fashioned concept, but one that should be pursued if you find someone that makes your heart sing.”

“The entire wedding was DIY,” explained the bride. “Most notably were the carnival games. What would a 50’s carnival be without games? One of the groomsmen was very generous with his time and volunteered to make the carnival games as a gift to us. We had a hat toss, bottle toss, beanbag toss, ping-pong toss, and a photo wall. The beanbag toss and photo wall were probably the most involved games with regards to execution.”


“The photo wall was a freestanding wall with 3 holes of various sizes cut out and lined with frames. Photos from the bride and groom’s sibling’s, parent’s, and grandparent’s weddings were framed and placed on the wall. A photographer friend of ours took professional photos of our guests and let’s just says that it was a good thing this booth was set up next to the bar.”

“The flowers were a big deal for me. I did not understand why flowers could be $3000 – $5000,” she continued. “That would have been a 3rd of my budget. I was looking through my wedding porn and I came across an article in Martha Stewart Weddings, which is by far my favorite wedding magazine, where the bride’s flowers were made out of paper butterflies. I loved the idea! Butterflies didn’t make sense for me, but it opened my mind up to the idea of other possibilities. I liked the idea of paper flowers, so I started looking for different patterns. The ones I settled with were crepe paper roses and tissue paper flowers for the bridal bouquets. I used pipe cleaner for the stems and covered them in flower tape.”

“Then I had the idea to have the jewellery flowers when I was at the groom’s parents’ house. His mother makes handmade jewellery out of jewelry she finds in stores and cannibalizes it to make it unique. She has tons of left over pieces that are too large to use in her creations, so I got the idea to have her make flowers out of them. She really got creative by gluing them in tiers and adding crystal accents. We then took wire and glued them to the wire to make the stems and covered them with flower tape.”

“Our centerpieces were also different. They were handmade paper flower pomanders by the bride, groom, wedding party, and family.

We put them on top of acrylic candelabras lit with LEDs. We used one type of flower to make it easy (tissue paper flower) and made hundreds of them every day for 4 months. I am still finding slivers of red tissue paper in my living room. I had the idea for acrylic candelabras but could not afford them. Then it occurred to me that my friend works in plastics and I asked if he could do it, so he designed it for me to be in a baroque style with a slot for an LED tap light at the base to light it up.”

“The one thing we take from this whole experience was that the elements that really made it different were the most important to us and ultimately what we received the most nay-saying about leading up to the wedding were things we received the most complements on afterward,” Aimee concluded. “People would ask me about elements of the wedding like my shoes and I would tell them they were going to be a bright blue and people would kind of look at me with this odd stare and say, “huh”. Then when the photos went out the one thing that everyone commented on was how beautiful the shoes were.”

“When we started talking about paper flowers people didn’t really get it. I think a lot of people didn’t think we knew what we were doing. To be fair, we didn’t always know what we were doing, but we knew that it was going to be amazing and it was. We have been told that our wedding was the best wedding that some guests had ever been to and is a benchmark for all future weddings in our community of friends and family.”
