Rustic, DIY Backyard Wedding

Shannon and Emma were supposed to be married in Hawaii, but when COVID scuppered their plans not once but twice, they decided to change tact and organised a backyard DIY wedding instead. Armed with lots of inspiration from Instagram and Pinterest, they organised the whole thing over about 6 months, and spent just £3,500.

“Covid really scuppered our original plans but we managed to pull of a beautiful, unique wedding with our closest loved ones anyway,” the brides told us. “It made us realise that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a beautiful wedding.”

Intimate, Dog-Lovers Backyard BBQ Wedding

We were the cliché of not looking for love, but we found it…on Tinder!” Kandace and Cade told us. “We knew we wanted a non traditional wedding, but initially were planning a larger affair. However when Covid-19 hit, it was ALMOST a relief that we could have a small wedding without offending friends and family. It had gotten to the point where we almost felt like we were inviting people as an obligation to anyone that met us. As it was, we ended up with a guest list of 40 that have really impacted our lives and will still be in our lives down the road.”

A ‘backyard BBQ but make it fancy’, was the couples’ inspiration for their day. They didn’t care much about things like cake or stationery– but they did care about infusing their personalities into the wedding and throwing a freakin’ awesome party for their loved ones!

“We wanted it completely unique to us,” Kandace continued. “Our flower girl and ring bearer wore unicorn and bear onesies respectively, complete with light up shoes. We had temporary tattoos with our surname on, custom aprons made for everyone so they could get stuck into the BBQ fun without worrying about ruining their attire, even our rings were different; Cade’s is made with dinosaur bone and mine has a London Blue Topaz as the centre stone.”

Thrifted Backyard Wedding with 1970s Vibes

Teagan and Tyrell were inspired by Elvis and Priscilla Presley’s wedding, as well as the bohemian vibes of Hawaii where the couple got engaged. “Above all,” the bride told us, “we wanted the focus to be on our closest friends and family coming together and celebrating rather than strict wedding ‘rules’ and traditions.

They were initially going to get married at the grande ballroom at a local wedding venue, however when they made the decision to relocate to Teagan’s parents backyard due to COVID, they implemented more casual, cozy touches while staying true to their boho/vintage style. They also dramatically cut their guest list from 100+ to just 35, and split their guests into two groups for a small dinner reception – even repeating the speeches so no-one felt left out!

Elegant & Romantic Outdoor COVID Wedding with a Feathered Veil

Margo and Deven had to change their plans for their September 2020 wedding so many times that they threw themes out the window. Instead of focusing on flowers or décor, they were inspired by the nature they got married in.

Married in the backyard of Deven’s family home, the whole wedding ended up being DIY and the couple spent $15,000. Margo got to flex her design skills on lettering and graphic design for their place cards and other stationery, and the pair worked together on choosing things like music. A particularly fun project was making the best of the situation and personalising hand sanitiser bottles for their guests.
