Why You Should Be Thinking Outside the Box with Your Wedding Venue

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always found sorting the venue one of most stressful parts of wedding planning. Not only is it one of the first things you need to do (you can’t set your date, send out invitations or even really start planning your decor and theme until you know where the day will take place) but almost everything else hinges on getting this part right. A fantastic venue will make your wedding day feel like a dream, whereas one that isn’t quite right will make the whole process a bit of a nightmare.

There are thousands of incredible wedding venues to chose from all over the country, and whatever style of celebration you want to have, you will be able to find one that you love. However I have always been a champion of thinking outside of the box when it comes to your search. While a more traditional space, that does weddings week in week out, will obviously have it’s advantages (experienced staff, everything you might need already in place, packages to keep things simple…) there really is something to be said about going off the beaten path a bit, ESPECIALLY, if you’re planning an alternative wedding. Not only will it often be cheaper as there won’t be lots of “wedding extras” included, but you’ll end up with a setting as unique as you want your wedding itself to be.

Rock n Roll Tea Party Meets Music Inspired Winter Wedding

Kelly and Charlie met after exchanging insults (!) at an Indie/Rock night in Soho, so it made perfect sense that music was a big part of their wedding theme.

Married at Rock n Roll Bride fave, The Asylum Chapel in Peckham in January 2018, it was important to the couple that their day was relaxed and informal. “We didn’t want it to feel like a ‘wedding’”, explained Kelly. “It might sound silly but we just wanted a big party with our closest family and friends”.

To do this they eschewed wedding traditions that didn’t feel right to them – including cutting the cake, having a sit-down meal and traditional wedding favours – instead they continued the music theme with a big stack of records by the seating plan for their guests to help themselves to!

Greek Mythology Inspired Elopement in the Dominican Republic

YOU GUYS! Stop everything because you need to see this incredible elopement like NOW. Married in January on Macao beach in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, Masya and Sasha, who live in Russia, had a traditional Greek ceremony in the most non-traditional way!

Maysa explains her feelings for her newly minted husband: “We believe that God creates us in two halves. One half remains within us and the better half is disunited. The journey of our lives is to wander through continents, oceans, nationalities, and social status to reunite with our other half. I recognised Sasha as my better half who I had been searching all my life as soon we we met. The feeling came to me so instinctively that I knew he was my soul mate. I have never felt so happy before when I am with Sasha. We are so much like each other that you can say we are our own reflection.”

Rock n Roll Meets Rustic Glam Motorbike Wedding

Brenna and Shawn’s submission was called “dead stuff, gold stuff, black stuff and motorcycles” and we think that just about covers their amazing Rock n Roll meets rustic glam wedding! Having met whilst their bands were touring, it was always going to be a pretty epic celebration…

“Our inspiration was everything we like,” Brenna says, “Gold glittery glam tones and jewel tones, black and bones.” It was also important to the couple that the day was super personal: “Our wedding was at my aunt and uncle’s farmland which has been in our family for generations, and was my grandparent’s favourite place. We spent our wedding night in a hunting cabin that my grandfather and great-grandfather built by hand, that each generation has lovingly updated. It’s a truly beautiful place.”

Brenna looked IIIIIIINSANE in an incredible strapless dress from Oleg Cassini with the most gorgeous metallic floral pattern, before changing into a sequinned fitted stunner for the evening (insert red dancing lady emoji here). Confession – I totally teared up at the photo of her and Shawn, dressed in a smart Men’s Wearhouse suit, doing their first look. Her bridesmaids all wore their own black dresses and sunglasses.

Light and Airy Halloween Wedding in Swansea

Melanie and Adam’s October wedding was a super cute take on a Halloween theme, keeping everything super light, bright and airy at Oldwalls in Gower, Swansea. As an ex practical-SFX artist and with it being Melanie’s favourite holiday, the couple wanted to evoke the imagery and colours, but most importantly the fun of it for all of their friends and family to enjoy. It was also a non-negotiable that her rescue chihauhau, Periwinkle, was able to take part in the day.

Melanie wore a strapless Rembo Styling dress with Virginia The Wolf bone jewellery and her everyday Bloody Mary Metal rings. On her feet she wore purple velvet Alexander McQueen flats with embroidered golden pumpkins, which she found second-hand on Vestaire Collective, and which matched Adam’s purpley Marc Darcy suit. In line with wanting it to be a big excuse for friends and family to have fun and see each other, fancy dress was of course encouraged too, making the ceremony pictures so much fun (spot the skeleton at the back!) It also totally helped that Melanie describes her and Adam as ‘not particularly serious people, so it was a bit more like a stand-up gig with some legal bits in it!’

Forest Elopement with a Pregnant Bride!

What struck us most about the beauty of this styled shoot is just how rare it is to see pregnant brides featured in mainstream bridal media – for the most part we’re still being served these virginal images of slim brides dressed in white, and obviously, at Rock n Roll Bride, we ain’t down with that.

Planned or unplanned, finding out you’re going to be pregnant on your wedding day – albeit super exciting! – can also add a whole new level of stresses and emotions to the proceedings, which can only be exasperated when you’re searching for inspiration and finding zilch that’ll fit your circumstances. What will my dress fit like? Should I try to make myself look ‘less pregnant’? do I have to act differently?!
