Jalira and Joe were married at Norwich Castle in June followed by a reception at The Keeper and the Dell, after Joe proposed on a boat trip in New Zealand. They had met when attending the University of East Anglia so wanted to return to Norwich to be married.

Their wedding had a rustic theme, and was inspired by Jalira’s love of African prints and being outdoors. “My favourite thing about our wedding was the joining of two cultures”, explained Jalira, “so we had African prints used for the bridesmaid dresses and as table runners, alongside Joe and his brothers in their family kilt!”

“We had a beautiful small private ceremony in the Benefactors Room at Norwich Castle. I walked down the aisle to the Black Keys, Everlasting Light. On the day there was a horse procession going through Norwich for a British art event and we received a horseshoe for good luck as a wedding gift.”

The bride wore a dress made by Naomi Deru, who also designed the bridesmaid dresses using fabric from Sonna Peckham. “Everything was pretty much DIY – we made the wedding favours, the wedding rings, arranged the flowers, made the table runners, the bunting, and the wedding invites. We also saved money by having some of our wedding gifts be contributions to the day and made sure we used everyone’s amazing skills. We found that people wanted to contribute to our wedding – we just had to ask.”

“Our advice for future brides and grooms is to enjoy all of it as it will be an amazing day, and don’t stress!”
