A Magical Day at Vivien of Holloway (Plus You Could Win £200!)

win £200 to spend at vivien of holloway

Although I spend most of my working week in sweatpants with only my cats for company, sometimes I’m lucky enough to be invited to visit people in much more glamorous locations. OK so the Holloway Road in London isn’t technically a very glam spot, but nestled in amongst the tattoo shops and greasy spoon cafés is a retro-lover’s oasis – Vivien of Holloway!

No doubt you’ve heard of them before. Their dresses are known far and wide as some of the best around. They have 12 main styles, and each of them comes in a huge range of different colours and prints, meaning they’re basically perfect for alternative bridesmaid outfits!

But did you know they also sell tops, cardigans, jeans and the dreamiest, fluffiest rainbow petticoats on the planet? They even have a wedding dress collection which starts from a mind-boggling £89! Best of all, everything is made right here in London.

I was in heaven… and overwhelmed with the choice. I wanted to try on EVERYTHING. Luckily I had shop assistants, Laura and Sandy, to help me narrow things down.

My go-to style is usually a maxi skirt and tee-shirt, but I also love the classic 50s shape. So that’s where we started. As soon as I slipped the halterneck wedding dress on I felt like a retro princess. We teamed it with a pink sash to match my shoes and a teal petticoat to match my hair.

I did NOT want to take this outfit off. If it was socially acceptable to rock a wedding dress every day of my life, this is the one I’d wear. Comfortable, classic and it gives you a killer shape. I literally could not believe it when they told me it cost £99. I was sure there had to be a zero missing off the end.

After I’d finished swishing and twirling away for a good 20 minutes, I was reluctantly ready to take it off and try something else. “Let’s do something fun!” I said, and to me, fun means SKULLS!

I went for the exact same shape dress but this time in the ‘pirate’, 100% cotton, fabric. Seriously, how amazing would your bridesmaids look in this? Maybe all wearing different coloured petticoats? Cuuuuute! The fabric also comes in tops, skirts and other shaped dresses too, all of which probably need to get in my wardrobe immediately.

I was ready to switch it up with a circle skirt and top for my next try on, and how could I resist this pink cat print? Did they design this with me in mind or what?

Laura was keen for me to try something I’d never normally pick out, so she selected this sarong style dress for me. I’m not gonna lie, I was initially VERY skeptical. I’m not really a ‘flaunt your curves’ kinda gal so I thought I’d feel extremely exposed with a dress that hugged me in all the right places! I have to say though, I think I looked pretty damn good in it. Although it’s fitted, the draped skirt disguises a bit of a tummy and the sweetheart neckline makes your bangers look…erm, banging!

I was clearly now feeling brave, because I did something I thought I’d NEVER do… I asked if I could try on a pair of jeans! Anyone that knows me will be aware of what a huge feat this is. I don’t think I’ve worn a pair of trousers in about 10 years, let alone jeans! In a moment of madness, I actually bought a pair from ASOS a few months ago… and they’ve sat in my wardrobe with the tags on ever since.

While I was initially going to go for the safe option of black, Laura convinced me to go for PURPLE and to team it with the pink cat print top. Well, I have to say… I’m pretty damn pleased with the outcome. So much so that I’m actually considering ordering a pair. What do you think!?

Everything in this picture! I’d love to rock into work in my law office looking so timelessly elegant

  2. Michelle ducker

I would definitely get my wedding dress from here if I won- I am so sick of looking at traditional fluffy dresses- I want to look hot on my wedding day and these dresses are perfect!!!!

  3. Kirsty Hurst

I have a couple of the amazing swing dresses so if I won I’d try and work VoH into my everyday work wardrobe with some of the new Herringbone swing trousers and a slash neck Jersey top 🙂 possibly a shirt for the hubby if there was any left over… Will the menswear range expand? I would spend a fortune if you sold trousers and suits and things for men <3

  4. Madeline McConville

Love Vivien of Holloway. I would go for the Sarong Miyako Garden Black. It would be perfect for the cocktail party I’m planning for my hen do!

  5. Adorable white wedding dress with blue petticoat matches your hair! Would go so well with one of your new Crown and Glory wedding hair accessories!

  6. Emily Dye

For the past 2 Christmasses, I’ve been lusting after the ultimate VoH Christmas outfit. I’ve told myself every year that I will treat myself to it but I never do. If I won £200, I would buy the 1950s Halterneck Dark Green Duchess Set along with a Black petticoat. I would finish the outfit off with the Duchess Pearl and Diamante Set and a Vintage Hand-Beaded Initial (E). I would wear it every Christmas and my festive season (and my life!) would be complete!!! X

  7. Riah

I’d love to splash out on VOH dresses for my bridesmaids, so I’d put this towards my bridesmaid dresses. We visited last year, but weren’t ready to make a purchase. Now that my girls are feeling more confident in their own skin, this would be the perfect treat. A dress that can twirl is definitely on the cards, like the grace navy white spot dress…or I’ve just discovered the lovely rose dot print. Either way, we could spend a day here!😍

  8. Angela Kelly

I love the Laura Mocha Fleck dress and the Raglan Print anchor blouse. But I basically love everything on the site!

  9. Jessica Hunn

I would get the 1950s Halterneck Duchess Dress either in plain green, lemon and cerise or in polka dot green, purple and pink for my gorgeous bridesmaids!!

  10. Holly Frankland

I would buy the 1950’s New White Rose Halterneck Dress (although please please please start doing this pattern in some of the form fitting dresses)
And a red and white spot Halterneck dress (or maybe black if I wasn’t feeling so brave)
Also a belt to go with them. Although I would have pretty much anything from your website. I really need to come and try the wedding dresses on!

  11. Jess Mitchell

I would definitely get the Laura Charcoal Fleck Dress! I’ve gone 1950’s style for my wedding dress later this year, and while I never dared before I’ve fallen in love with all things swishy 🙂

  12. Angie

I would get two out of three best women dresses (grace and duchess in Navy!) and then be forced to spend a fortune on another dress, petticoats for all and possible the swallow brooch as a cheeky extra for me! Love the designs so much.

  13. Samantha

I literally would be spoiled for choice!! But could definitely do with more separates, so would try and spend the money on circle skirts and pretty tops. More than likely, the gorgeous sarong dresses would draw me in though!! xx

  14. Laura Smith

I have always wanted to kit my bridesmaids out in these stunning circle dresses. I might even add another one to my collection while I am at it. They are such good quality and fit beautifully!

  15. Laura (Loz)

It would have to be the 1950s Halterneck Red Duchess Dress. I’m actually looking for a dress like this to get married in. I’m not really into v.feminine long white dresses and think I could handle something like this. 😉

  16. Hayley Harrison

Short and simple, I would buy my wedding dress and two different coloured petticoats to go underneath 😍

  17. Stepharie

1950s Halterneck Luxury Red Satin Fan Lace Dress would be top of my list! wearing it down the aisle would reflect my personality and style and that’s who he fell in love with. its a dream dress. perfect colour and shape. as im stealing his last name the least i can do is steal his heart.

  18. Evie

I would totally buy the Bombshell Black Sateen dress or the Grace Black and White Spot Bust dress!♡

  19. Hannah Lord

So many lovely things!! Id go for 1950s Halterneck New Rose White Dress and 1950s Halterneck Black Sateen Dress 2 both such beautiful styles

  20. Sarah Broadbent

I would buy everything if I could!I love their swing dresses so i would buy myself a couple more of them ready for summer!

  21. Charlotte Dodd

I’m getting married to my best friend in May and have adored Vivienne of Holloway since I had my teal satin dress for my graduation 4 years ago! I always dreamt of a fun wedding so it’s all about tropical colour and a boat party for us. So I’d buy a big beautiful teal petticoat and an adorable pink lips clutch bag . Flowers for my bridesmaids hair and the beautiful turquoise earrings for my mother as a gift . And as the post wedding blues set in, I’d love the coral blouse to wear on our honeymoon!

  22. Layla Thomas

So much fun looking through their website! Love this 1950s Halterneck Floral Noir Dress and these for the summer Pedal Pushers Black

  23. I would probably create an outfit with the Slash Neck Top Marle Grey Jersey and the Circle Skirt Black Flannel with a Petticoat Black underneath OR a Slash Neck Top Black Jersey with a Circle Skirt Burgundy Crepe Tartan and a Petticoat Black underneath. I don’t find myself particularly girly but when vintage style comes into play I absolutely love it all.

  24. Lorna

Omgosh! I love this brand ANYWAY and have 4 dresses, 2 skirts and 2 tops by Vivien already. But with a £200 voucher I’d have to go for something our of my comfort zone. Majority of what I have are the circle skirts and circle dresses (except for one red rose print pencil dress – shamazing!) so I’d probably get a few of the colourful jeans for spring and maybe a slash neck top. But most of all, I’d HAVE to invest in the teal oriental flowers sarong and bolero. I’ve been crushing on sarong dresses for years but never had the courage to try one. Here’s hoping xxxx

  25. Fern

Oh wow, £200 at VoH? I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this imaginary shopping trip, never mind the possibility of winning!

I’ve decided I want the Victory Rose Peach circle skirt and bolero, with the broderie anglaise white halterneck and a white petticoat. They’ll look gorgeous together. And I’d dress them up with the lace gloves my Mum wore on her wedding day, and my grandma’s blush pearl set.

Then I would wear them every single day. Infact I’d probably go visit my grandma in them, as she loves these sort of clothes too. She’s 81 this year and doesn’t have the mobility to dress up much these days, but she loves when I dress up and then we talk for hours about what she used to wear when she was younger. I love it so much.

  26. Lea

    Hey gals,

I would have a complete shopping spree because I’m in love with these items:

  27. Shannon Paddison

  28. Eve

<3 this post! Vivien of Holloway are the only dresses that work for me – I'm a mod(dette) inspired by "Lol" from This Is England; a no-fuss tomboy, so the VoH halterneck's flatter my boyish figure but also make me look glam. The first time I ever tried wearing one it was a revelation! Suddenly I COULD wear a dress for the first time since my Nana dressed me up when I was knee-high… 🙂 So for my big day I'm definitely going to be in a classic 50s halterneck, I love the look of the white star patterned one (1950s Halterneck White Star Satin Dress) but in keeping with non-tradition I want to mix it up with a brightly coloured frothy underskirt and matching belt…like the silver glitter 2 inch belt and dusky petticoat. My hair will likely be a shade of dusky pink or lilac to match by our big day!

  29. Claire Davies

Love Love Love Love Vivien of Holloway. So hard to choose from such lovely items. I would go for the very pretty Rio Top Cerise Spot which I would match with a pair of 1950s Jeans Black Denim. I would then add a fabulous Tea Timer in the Red Spiral and a Pin-Up Lips Clutch Pink Rose bag as they are just stunning! Fantastic #competition 🙂 Would love to win! Thank you ever so much.

    Men’s Long-Sleeved Chambray Shirt
    Men’s Short-Sleeved Stripe Green Shirt
    Men’s Short-Sleeved Petrol Check Shirt
Men’s Long-Sleeved Blue Mini Check Shirt

  31. Stefanie Curran

Definitely the 1950s halter neck royal duchess dress as a nod my mum who wore a royal blue wedding dress when she married my dad 30 years ago and the halter neck pencil floral noir dress for no other reason than it’s simply beautiful!
