Lizzie and Rob, wedding photographers from Australia, were married in a field, on a friend’s property in Upper Brookfield, Queensland. Their wedding had a colourful, festival theme, and even though it rained – a lot – it didn’t damped spirits one little bit!

There was oodles of amazing DIY action in this wedding. Lizzie’s mum made her dress from a vintage pattern, the bouquet was home made and the bride designed and made that amazing cake herself! All the invitations were sent out digitally, which saved a lot of money. They also designed these themselves.

“We really tried to go for a festival/ DIY theme with emphasis on fun and relaxation”, wrote the bride. “We tried our best to steer away from wedding traditions we’d witnessed in our own line of work as wedding photographers.  We bought some garden games and had a badminton tournament and had trophies especially made up.  Unfortunately the garden games couldn’t really be set up because of the rain, but we had some guests playing badminton and announced the winners at the end of the evening anyway!”

“All of our decorations were home-made and on a strict budget”, she continued. “We held a ‘crafternoon’ a few weeks before the wedding, where friends and family came around to help make things! The projects included woollen pom-poms, doilie and paper garlands, fabric flowers, button table decorations, entrance and marquee signage designed and bunting.”

“We were incredibly inspired by any wedding where the couple had expressed themselves in the details. We sat down and really thought about what is important to us as individuals and also what defines us as a couple. Music, friends, family, togetherness, creativity and being very very silly were the main factors and so we just went from there. Of course I spent a lot of time researching budget DIY ideas using YouTube, Etsy, Pinterest etc. and spent many hours sourcing materials and teaching myself (and others) how to make fabric flowers and bouquets!”

“We put so much thought into trying to make our wedding as unique to us as possible, and perhaps we worked a lot harder than couples who go with a wedding planner, but it meant that we could tailor absolutely everything to our every desire. I wouldn’t have changed a thing in the end!…it truly was a celebration of all things Rob and Lizzie!”

“The photography was our biggest expense by far”, she concluded. “It won’t come as a surprise that as wedding photographers we are so very aware of how important it was to have the story of our day told by someone we trust completely.  Todd Hunter McGaw and his crew were perfect for us, they understood what we were trying to do with our day, they knew what was important to us and in turn produced some incredibly special images that reflect how much fun and madness we had.  We’ll be forever grateful for this amazing work and feel we have made some life-long friends.”
