Thursday Treats: There’s No Place Like Home

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Ahh it sure is good to be back in my own space, especially as while I was away Gareth replaced ALL THE CARPET in our house! It might sound like a weird thing to be excited about, but when we moved in (over seven years ago!) it was something we immediately wanted to change but it was the one thing we never got around to. It’s such a big job we kept making excuses and putting it off.

Then, a few days before I left for New York Gareth told me he was ready to give it a go and that he wanted to fit it all by himself while I was away. He schooled himself with YouTube tutorials and laid every last scrap of that carpet with his own bare hands. What a champ.

Now our house looks brand new, bright and glorious. Like a proper grown up pad. I’m starting to get very excited about the prospect of new curtains, new furniture and colourful pictures hanging on the wall. Having such an overbearingly disgusting coloured carpet (terracotta – seriously who thought that was a good choice?!) meant we didn’t want to do ANYTHING to the house, the colour just ruined everything. But not any more! I am on a Pinterest planning mission.

In non-carpet related news, I got back from DC early Monday morning and I’ve been crazy-town busy since then. On Tuesday I went to the Cosmopolitan Magazine Blog Awards where I presented an award AND came highly commended in the wedding blog category. YAY! It was such a fun night, so fun in fact that I decided to make a little video. I hope you enjoy it!

It’s definitely awards season in the blogging world. Tomorrow we’re off to The Savoy (fancy!) for the Wedding Magazine blog awards too!

I hope you’ve all had a wicked week. Here’s some other pretty wonderful things that have been going on in the rest of blog-land.

Thursday Treats: Workshops, Awards and Weird New Hair

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

I’ve spent the past seven days in New York and I’ve been having the best time! After teaching over the weekend, Shauna had to head to Palm Springs for a design retreat, so Gala and I have been exploring the city as a terrible twosome all week. It’s been pretty rad although we’ve missed our third!

By the way, this update comes to you from an Amtrak train speeding through the American countryside! We’re teaching our final US class of the year in DC this weekend (er where has this year gone please?!) I’ve never visited the Capital so I’m preeetty excited to see the White House and have some touristy fun times all day tomorrow. Any other recommendations of what we should do while we’re there?

I fly home Sunday night, so I have to go to the airport as soon as the workshop is over. I have two awards ceremonies to go to next week – the Cosmopolitan Blog Awards, where I’m co-presenting (!!) an award as well as being nominated for Best Wedding Blog, and the Wedding Magazine Blog Awards where I’m also up for a couple of gongs! It should be a fun week, for sure!

Thursday Treats: Salutations from The USA!

Gala Darling HQ

This update comes to you from one of my favourite places in the whole wide world, New York City! I’m currently sat in Gala’s beautiful apartment, sipping PG Tips and watching Dolly snoozing on my bed. Hank got in with me last night (he was SO FUNNY, trying to be all cute and sneaky, although when you’re a 60lb pitbull there’s nothing sneaky about you!) but when I woke up this morning, Dolly was spooning me. Oh puppies.

I’m in town for the next Blogcademy workshop which kicks off this weekend at Makeshift Society in Brooklyn. The class is basically sold out, but if you wanted to make a last minute booking, I’m sure we could find space for you! Then, after a week wondering around Manhattan we’re off to DC for another class. YAY!

I found plenty of time for internet surfing while waiting for my flight yesterday, enjoy!

Thursday Treats: Is Time Speeding Up or What?!

editor in chief

I’ve been out of the office ALL WEEK, which is pretty nuts considering I have approximately 30 blog posts and a whole damn magazine to write before I go to New York for the next round of Blogcademy workshops NEXT WEDNESDAY. Good god Father Time, would you just slow down already?!

So I haven’t spent a LOT of time online this week, but here are a few little tidbits I found and loved recently. Have you read anything amazing? Feel free to post links in the comments!

Thanks for all the love about my new collection with Crown and Glory too. It’s my favourite range yet so I’m so pleased you all seemed to love it as much as I do!

By the way, isn’t my hoodie, like, the best. thing. ever? Sophie made it for me as a congrats on your big magazine deal gift and I am obsessed. I might never take it off.

Thursday Treats: Magazine Planning, Trade Show Hopping & Crown and Glory Finalising!

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Getting ready for the Bridal Buyer awards, wearing one of my favourite pieces from my new collection with Crown and Glory. My dress is Ted Baker.

It’s been a busy seven days! Last Friday Gareth and I hotfooted it down to the Giraffe Media offices in Taunton to start planning the first issue of the brand new magazine with my managing editor, Jade. She is the editor of Wedding Ideas magazine and really knows her stuff, so having her on my team is VERY exciting indeed!

We plotted out the features for the first issue and I came home that night and starting working on them right away. I’m a total nerd, it’s true. But with the first issue currently being planned to launch at the end of October, we really need to get a wriggle on!

Then, on Monday, Gareth and I hit the road again, this time in the direction of Harrogate for the annual bridal trade show. This is the industry event of the year daaaarling, and the place where all the bridal designers show their latest collections to the press and bridal boutiques.

Thursday Treats: Times, They Are A-Changing

Blogcademy-Berlin-Shoot-328

Shell De Mar

The phrase “It’s been a whirlwind” were coined for weeks like this one. WHOA, you guys, WHOOOOOOAAAAAA!

So, in case you missed the news, on Monday I announced that Rock n Roll Bride print magazine is going national! Oh yeah baby, I’m going to be the editor in chief of an actual, legit wedding magazine, available in real life shops.

Since I spilled the beans there’s been a lot of recurring questions so I’ll do my best to address them all right now.

International availability: it’s definitely in the plan to distribute the magazine around the world, however print distribution isn’t that straightforward unfortunately. This may not happen right away, but its 100% in the grand plan. However, on launch there will be an iPad version for those of you that can’t get your mitts on physical copies! YAY!

Submissions: I will be dealing with real wedding submissions as usual. If you’d like to submit your wedding for either the blog or magazine, just follow my super-simple submissions guide.

Jobs & freelance writers: We are hiring for the magazine, so if you’d be interested in applying, please email your CV and a covering letter to rachelsouthwood@giraffe-media.co.uk.

Advertising: If you run a business that would be interested in advertising in the new magazine, you can email craig@giraffe-media.co.uk.

Stockists: If you have a shop and you’d be interested in stocking the mag, you can also email craig@giraffe-media.co.uk.

Subscriptions: Will you be able to get a monthly subscription and have the magazine delivered direct to your door? Short answer: HELL YES! More info to follow.

Launch date: I’ll be shouting (loudly!) when the first issue hits the shops, so don’t you worry. We are currently aiming for an October launch, which is SO SOON! I’m trying not to think about how much work I have to do between now and then!

Again, thank you SO MUCH for all your amazing comments this week. It’s made this bloomin’ exciting time even more exciting. I can not WAIT to see the first one on the newsstands. I’ll probably cry. So if you happen to shop in Morrisons in Reading, you might want to look out for a sobbing pink mess on launch day!

I think that’s everything for now. Again, thank you thank you thank you!!

Here’s what else has been going on around the web over the past seven days.
