The majority of submissions that land in Rock n Roll Bride’s inbox are from photographers. which is great because I get to sample all the best, innovative and inspiring new photography and Rock n Roll weddings out there. However there is something very special about receiving an excitable email from a recently married couple, bursting to tell me all about their wedding. I got an email just like this only yesterday and Sally & Sam’s charming vintage/Chinese fusion wedding was only made better by the fabulous running commentary from the bride.

“I married my husband over the bank holiday weekend of the 1st – 4th May 2009 in a private, and very grand, house in a tiny village in North Norfolk. Having stayed there on family holidays since I was a little girl, it was always a dream to get married in the hall and use the sweeping staircase as my aisle.  We had 40 guests staying for the whole weekend and 60 more arriving on Sunday for our main wedding day. Our venue wasn’t licensed so we had a very small registry office service on the Saturday which was followed by a larger Humanist service on the Sunday. This meant that on the morning of the humanist wedding, I went downstairs and had a very nervous breakfast with my guests! Being inspired by LOVE, it was our dream to have a celebration of everything that this small word encompasses – our love for each other, our love for our friends and family and the love that we wanted to give out to thank all our fabulous guests for coming to celebrate with us. We wanted to make it clear that it wasn’t just a celebration of our love for each other but our love for our family and friends as well.”

There is going to be much love for this wild English wedding, because as soon as I saw it my heart flipped and I couldn’t wait to share! Not only because Micheal & Alice’s wedding was quirky, vintage and Rock n Roll cool, but because they are British too…yey for the UK giving the uber stylish yanks a run for their money!*

The couple chose The Hop Farm as their venue because, in their own words, “it had a certain britishness to it and being both born and bred in Kent we grew up with the iconic images of the oast houses and it just felt comforting and homely to have them as a back drop to the wedding.” They didn’t really have one theme per-say but they just came up with/borrowed ideas from many areas that inspired them. In fact the only stipulation they put throughout the whole of the process of planning their wedding was that they wanted to get as many people as they liked together to have a really good party, and the actual ceremony and marriage was just a small part of that.

Meredith & Eric’s wedding was based around their all time favourite band – Gun n Roses baby! Meredith wore a dress designed by the same designer behind the wedding dress in the November Rain video. It is imperative they you listen to this song as you view these fabulous images (and excuse me, but did anyone else forget how awesome this song is…and don’t even get me started on the hair - I love it!)

To top it all off, the couple actually got their wedding for free…yes free! Check out the full story from the News 9 news report and the full list of vendors who donated their services for nothing on photographer Brandi’s blog.

This Art Deco bridal shoot took place at Eltham Palace in London. The fabulous dresses including  Valerie’ by Sarah Arnett, ‘Kristine’ by Claire Pettibone and two dresses by Olivia Couture were provided by Blackburn Bridal and were all chosen to reflect the Art Deco nature of the building and the shoot. The flowers were sent by  Veevers Carter. Photographer Sarah wanted to tell me all about her vision.

There were a few motivations for the shoot. I wanted to show off the Art Deco design of the Eltham Palace and I felt that our model, Victoria’s look really encapsulated the decadent spirit of the 1920’s which was perfect. The dresses were also chosen according to the venue with the exception of the the Olivia Couture swirl dress which was shot in an Italian style room adjacent to the iconic circular entrance hall. The soft, vintage styled bouquet worked well with all the dresses and the final shots with the black bobbed wig were an unashamed homage to Louise Brooks, the Art Deco pin up herself!”

I’ve got a second British post for your today – and this time it’s Miriam & Bruce’s art deco/speakeasy/1920s-30s inspired wedding. The event took place at The Brickhouse, Brick Lane, London which is in the heart of the city’s uber cool East End and was complete with monochromatic colour scheme, gambling tables and cheeky burlesque entertainment. Miriam & Bruce had a humanist ceremony in front of their guests before kicking off a night of unashamed debauchery! Female guests were treated to a black or white feather fan on arrival, and the gents mini bottles of Jack Daniels and chocolate cigars.

Miriam wore a dress and ostrich feather shrug from the fabulous Joanna Fleming Design and birdcage veil from Jane Taylor Millinery.

I may well be stating the obvious here, but Amy & Jay’s wedding is freakin’ awesome. Hell to the yeah…I love to blog this stuff!

We were married on 01/02/10 in Brooklyn, NY. We really love our neighborhood and wanted to keep it local, allowing our guests to fully experience the day in Williamsburg Brooklyn. We had our ceremony and three course vegan meal at a place called Monkey Town. As a wedding gift, one of our best friends/dancer/aerialist/choreographer, Sarah Wollschlager, did an aerial performance to Etta James’ “At Last,” which contributed to the uniqueness and beauty of our ceremony. Our officiant, from the Brooklyn Society of Ethical Culture, Tasha Paley, also made the ceremony even more personal- she brought laughter to our guests and made several of us shed a tear while reading an excerpt from “The Little Prince.”

We then had the reception at Trophy Bar, which included an open bar, dancing, vegan cupcakes, and a photobooth. For the photobooth, two of our best friends created a caution tape backdrop and set up a wireless remote, allowing the guests to get ready and pose! As far as vegan cupcakes in NYC go, Babycakes is the absolute best…we were so relieved that all of the non-vegan guests really loved them! They also made us a 6″ cake, where we put our super cute monster cake toppers, created by Leslie Levins.  It was absolutely an incredible day and it wouldn’t have been what it was without our amazing friends!

Amy had two dresses – the ceremony dress was found on Ebay and was a similar design to Maggie Sottero’s Rasharna dress, which she loved but when she saw the less-fussy Ebay version she was sold! Her reception dress was from Betsey Johnson’s Spring 2008 collection. She carried a felt bouquet by Jennifer Rae of Ribbons n Bows Boutique (who she discovered through Rock n Roll Bride!)

This beautiful Valentine’s day/love letter themed shoot was sent to me by Alice Hu and I’m afriad I couldn’t wait until February 14th to share it with you. The shoot was put together for Fantasy Floral Designs. Amanda Heer is the original creator of the vintage brooch bouquet and for this shoot she created another keepsake bouquet called “Love Letter”.  The ‘flowers’ were made from vintage diaries and included photographs of loved ones to add another personal touch.  The invitations in this shoot were provided by Papeterie Store.

Something a little different in Under the Spotlight today. I’d like to introduce you to Aerin & Jeremy of Royal Steamline. They specialise in wedding invites with a gothic/steampunk/retro/vintage vibe and I think you’re going to totally dig what they do! I can’t wait to get going…

Royal_Steamline_Avogadro

Who are you and what do you do?

Royal Steamline is Aerin and Jeremy — a husband-and-wife design team based in Portland, Oregon, USA. We create wedding invitations that have a dark, clockwork or otherwise retro/vintage flavor. Through a subtle and sometimes anachronistic combination of shadows, textures and vintage illustrations, we aim to convey a sense of eras strange and forgotten. Sea monsters mingle next to robotic ravens, and gentlemen scientists have tea with rockabilly rebels. Simply stated, we offer unconventional invitations for unconventional people.

Who/what are your biggest influences? Who do you really admire?

We primarily create designs that aim to capture a theme or mood. Our influences vary wildly — from vintage fashion & science journals to odd finds at antique stores. Now, if you mean visual artists that we follow and appreciate, here are a few names off the top of our heads: EMEK, Alex Gross, George Tooker, Gregory Crewdson, Joe Coleman, Irving Norman, Guy Burwell, Wayne Douglas Barlowe, Michael Michael Motorcycle, Toni Frissell, Chris Ware, Guy Colwell, R. Kenton Nelson, and Jeremy could stare at Todd Schorr’s “The Spectre of Monster Appeal” for hours.
