Shooting a bride in water is nothing new, but there was just something about this Lady in the Lake inspired shoot that spoke to me. I love the bride's beautiful blue, green and purple mermaid hair (obviously) and the simple yet edgy styling ideas are pretty damn awesome aren't they? I'd love to see a future real bride carrying a rustic and dramatic bouquet like some of these.Read more...

When wedding photographer Emily Johnson ran a trash the dress competition on Rock n Roll Bride, she hoped she might find some cool babes to shoot. And, oh boy, did she! One of the first winners was Ruth Power, a musician from New Zealand. I'm not going to lie, I'm a little freaked out by this shoot... in fact I'm damn right scared. I don't think I'd like to get stuck in a dark alley with this pair as lovely as I bet they are when they're not covered in fake blood. Amy & Paul went all out with this post-wedding shoot - murder, fake blood, suicide and all! Warning: this baby is not for the faint hearted. For her bridal shoot Emma wanted to do something different, and after buying a simple dress she decided to alter it herself as part of the shoot. Nikki & Marc wanted to do an unusual 'trash the dress' photo shoot to celebrate their marriage. Something totally unique was on the cards when they braved the nearby Honey Island Swamp with photographer Chelsea Patricia, who explained the idea to me, "Nikki & Marc are a pretty adventurous and unique couple (Marc is a tattoo artist and lord-of-the-bike—he even bike jousts on his tall bike. Nikki allows him to tattoo her ankle poke and stick style), but I still was nervous as to how they would respond to 'Hey, let’s venture into the gator, snake, and mosquito infested waters of the Louisiana bayou! Raven wanted some carnival themed bridal portraits and so she asked William of Famous William Company to shoot them for her. "She had a blast and was all smiles even though the weather was blazing hot that day," William told me. "The carnival was located outside of Atlanta, Georgia. "My inspiration for this shoot came from the bride her name is Alison and she has a pet bunny as well as a cupcake tattoo on her wrist," photographer Tab McCausland told me. "So when I started to plan doing my first trash the dress photography class I didn't want it to be just a boring setting. Sooooo we went all out cake, hats, tea pots, a little tuxedo for the bunny, little caterpillar, table set up the works! Susan wanted to get back into her wedding dress for a memorable photo shoot for her anniversary. When she married Jesse 10 years ago they had some trouble with their photographer (who, ahem, ended up in jail) so although they received some 4 x 6 prints, they didn't manage to get an album or any photo enlargements made. They were also pretty unhappy with the portraits of Susan from the images they did get, and none of them showed off her beautiful dress in all it's glory.Read more...

Lori & Nick were married in Hawaii in November and weren't 100% happy with their professional photographs. While they were lovely, they didn’t have any pictures of Lori getting ready, and very few pictures that broke any boundaries. Lori loved her dress, and she really wanted to have some more shots taken that she could really treasure, "That’s when they found me," explained photographer Sarah Maren. "We got together at the lovely Citizen Hotel in downtown Sacramento where Lori and her Mom had spent a girls night. We were able to get pictures of Lori’s Mom helping her get dressed (something she missed out on doing at the actual wedding because she was busy setting up the ceremony space.) We then braved the cold and rain and rocked out an incredible portrait session of this beautiful couple. We ended things under the freeway with Lori lying next to a drainage grate. Adam & Barbara's trash the dress shoot is like nothing I've ever seen! Day of the Dead make up fused with an awesome cemetery location made for something pretty special. The bride did the make up "It was a trial and error process," she explained. "I looked up make up designs online and tried different ones to see which would look best with my (and my husband's) facial structure, without looking too cluttered. Since it was right before Halloween, I could find cream makeup almost anywhere, and picked up a few tubes, and some extra just in case I ran out. I applied it with paint brushes, which helped so I could layer it on without it looking too thick. I had to apply three layers of white to give it a true white appearance, and if I hadn't run out of time, I would've applied more."Read more...

Photographer Michelle met recent bride Jesikuh through a mutual friend. Jesikuh had always wanted to do a trash the dress/bridal shoot as she and her husband Chris didn't have professional photographs taken at their wedding and - in fact she didn't even have her own wedding dress! The term 'Trash the Dress' is thrown about a lot in this industry so it's nice to see a shoot where I can comfortably call it a 'real' Trash the Dress shoot - boy is this David's Bridal number destroyed! The shoot took place at Dry Lake Bed in Las Vegas, Nevada and the theme was Superman and Lois Lane having a great time (!) Eric, the groom is a huge Superman superfan and their wedding theme was actually, Superman Chic (which you can see for yourself here.) "Honestly, we just wanted them have a great time and I think that definitely shows" photographer Mike explained. "We believe they are a Rock n Roll couple because Nichole destroyed her dress and at the end of the day, she decided to shadowbox it and hang it in their house as their own personal work of art. Nope this isn't one of my photo shoots - but model Jennifer and I sure to have one (very pink) thing in common! The shoot took place in Richmond, VA at Belle Isle which is a park that has a large suspension bridge that takes you to another small island that has several abandoned buildings including an old power plant on it - perfect shooting ground! "The power plant is really cool, lots of graffiti and crumbling architecture" photographer Jan told me. "Her dress was bought at a thrift store for $3, we added the black sash to give it more character. She was an awesome model, with great pink hair and lots of style I hope to photograph her wedding eventually. I love your blog by the way.
